Postcard from Camp: Geoff Hangartner

While covering camp for Buffalo Rumblings, I had the opportunity to get close to the action during Buffalo Bills practice.  Before one practice, a friend of mine called and asked if I wanted the extra VIP ticket he had.  During practice I got an up close and personal look at the Bills standing mere feet from my spot.  After practice I had the opportunity to talk with Shawn Nelson (he's a really big guy), Rian Lindell, Brian Moorman, Lee Evans, and most notably new Bills center Geoff Hangartner.  While talking with these players I asked for an autograph next to their picture in the training camp edition of The Bills Digest.  The Digest is the official publication of the Bills and they were giving them away the first day of training camp.  I opened up to the offensive line page because I knew there was a picture of "Hangman."  I was shocked when the first words out of his mouth were, "That's not me!" My next question of course was, "Well then who is it?" We finally came to the conclusion that it is Nick Hennessey, the undrafted backup offensive lineman.  Hangartner, my friends and I all started laughing as he signed next to a picture labeled "Geoff Hangartner" of a man that was clearly not him.

What made the mistake possible?  First, both have the goatee working for them.  They are both white, and at the time Hangartner wore number 63 and Hennessey wore 69.  In the picture the right part of the 9 is obscured by the way Hennessey is standing.  When you take the time to really look at the picture you'll notice Hennessey is smaller than Hangartner in pretty much every way possible - legs, arms, face.

As Hangartner walked away after he signed he turned and told me, "Somebody over there's gonna get fired for this" before turning and walking towards the locker room laughing.  He was kidding. I think...

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
