Who will be this year's surprise cut?

Someone commented in another thread that the Bills would at some point make a cut that left us all with our jaws dropping.  So, here's your chance to name who this year's surprise cut will be - oh, and by the way, you can't pick Ryan Neill

I'll start it off by saying I think John McCargo will be cut in favor of Derrick Jones.  What's my reasoning, you ask?  Absolutely none at all.  Hey, we're talking surprise cuts here, it's not supposed to make sense, at least at first.

Who are your choices?  Let's hear it!

Kelsay or Denney

I think the Bills will part way with one of these DE’s. I only hope its Kelsay tho but I am probably going to be wrong.

kelsay

oh god i would be so happy if kelsay was cut but he wont so thats that. Ive heard absolutely nothing from denney in camp and i wouldnt be too sad if he got cut either. In the end if its a de that gets cut i think itll be copeland

Denney

Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy, and I’d much rather the Bills cut Kelsey, but that wont happen.

As to why I think Denney has a chance of being cut? Well he’s in his final year of his contract for one. Then theres the fact that he’s pretty much only usefull against the run. And personally I’d much rather we keep our three young pass rusher (Maybin, Ellis and Bryan) and rejuvinate an area of great weakness on this team rather then we keep an aging, one dimentional DE.

as much as i wouldn’t mind seeing denney cut, i think brian’s point is right. he’s NOT one-dimensional – he’s a dependable player against the run and pass. will he get another contract? i don’t know. but i don’t think he’ll be cut.

by the_prophet on Aug 22, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn’t being in the final year of his deal be to the team’s benefit? If Denney and Kelsay are so much alike, why wouldn’t they dump the guy with the bigger/longer contract?

Plus, he has much pass rush ability than Kelsay.

Ok let me make this clear. If it was souly up to me Kelsey would have been cut in January. The fact that he is still around shows that he wont be cut. So my personal preferance then shift to letting Denney go in order to keep Bryan and Ellis.

Realisticly though, Bryan is getting cut.

i agree... i'd rather see kelsay gone than denney considering denney was more productive than kelsay last year and had less time on the field, and the biggest reason pry being their pay scales...

i would be fine if we started the season w/ denney taking kelsay’s role of being in their on running downs, and maybin coming in to rush the passer

Youboty

My guess is Youboty gets injured again sometime before cut down day and Lankster makes another pick in tonight’s game and the Bills run with McKelvin, McGee, Florence, Corner, Lankster. With Youboty sporting yet another injury the Bills decide they can’t take him into battle and rid themselves of him. Too unreliable. Just a random guess but we’re talking surprise cuts, aren’t we?

Agreed

Only if injured again. Expecting a pass rush this season should identify playmakers in our secondary. Youboty has demonstrated this ability, but I would expect McKelvin and McGee becoming more proficient in this area along with some safeties as well. Funny how a pass rush will do these things. An injured Youboty could be his final one in a Bills uniform.

I think we could find a trade partner for youboty, I doubt we simply cut him. I know he’s injury-prone but I am certain that we could still get a 2nd day pick for him.

My guess is Kelsay. Simply because Denney is much cheaper and does the same type of job. Our rookies show too much promise not to keep them. So I think they cut Kelsay ‘cause nobody else would trade for him anyways and especially not at his price. If the rookies don’t pan out they simply extend Denney and if they succeed in turning the corner and making a difference, then 2010 is Schobel/Maybin/Ellis & Copeland (younger, faster & cheaper)

Rhodes? or Florence?

Hall and Oman have shown some value early on, and the way McIntyre ran at the end of the last game might mean a short yardage or goal line role for him out of the tailback position.

Also, perhaps there are too many playmaking youngsters for a guy like Florence to keep them off of the field.

Just throwing that out there….if it doesn’t happen, forget I said it, but if it does, “I told you so!”

by bluecollarbuffalo on Aug 22, 2009 2:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nah. Florence is going to be the starter at Nickel, even with his injury now.

Marshawn Lynch is pretty good at finding the end zone, too. Why replace him with McIntyre?

I think both are more realistic than thinking the Bills might actually cut Kelsay. They made a big time commitment to him not that long ago and if we’ve learned anything about this team, its that they don’t change even in the face of overwhelming evidence that what they are doing is not working…….hopefully this year proves to be different (but if they just call the same stupid plays and execute them poorly w/o a huddle, what difference will that change make?)

my surprize cut...

langston walker!!
I’m kidding…
kinda….
I have this theory (it is my 1st theory that I have labled theory number one) that when the coaching staff told him he is being moved to left tackle, they also told him he needs to drop 30lbs. in order to get set quicker. And the diet is why he reacted so negatively to the switch. well, he showed them the coaches that they are not the boss of him and gained 30 instead. god he looks awful blocking, or just standing there (he looks like he just swallowed a keg.)

Not a chance that it’s fine. He is an absolutely first-rate blocker, especially in the run game, and is a dependable short-range receiver as well.

I'm voting for Kelsay

As we’ve seen in previous threads the Bills have something of a surplus at the DE position; Shobel, Kelsay, Denney, Ellis, Bryan, Maybin. The common logic is that the Bills can keep no more than 5 DEs and might only go with 4.

Maybin is a mortal lock simply based on his draft position and his continued ability to convert oxygen into carbon dioxide. Schobel can milk the injury exuse at least through this year, never mind that he wasn’t all that productive in 2007. Denney is comparable to Kelsay but cheaper, if a year older. Meanwhile, Ellis and Bryan have been coming on strong in preseason games. The Bills, of course, have more of an investment in 2008 3rd round pick Chris Ellis than Bryan…though third rounds have been known to flame out early.

Perhaps more to the point, the Bills have shown a willingness to let veterans go in order to develop younger players. Dock was dropped for a rookie. Hang is younger than Fowler and was drafted in 2005 like Preston. Wood displaced Butler, himself a younger player. The Bills dumped McGahee for Lynch and London Fletcher for Poz.

Yes, Jauron needs to win now. However, a good season followed by another 7-9 effort likely would doom his last ever head coaching gig. Dropping Kelsay—who is a known quantity when it comes to (lack of) pass rushing prowess—in favor of a younger, cheaper player makes a degree of sense. Chris Ellis (or Copeland Bryan for that matter) might represent improvement in terms of getting pressure on opposing QBs.

Then there’s the injury bug to consider. Say, for example, that Schobel comes up lame again. Cutting a guy who won’t be claimed by another team certainly has an appeal; even if he’s not a great player he does at least know the system. Ellis would be claimed off waivers. I’m not so sure that Kelsay would as teams know that he has zero upside. Bryan has made it through waivers in the past and could again.

So, I’m voting for Kelsay—particularly if Buffalo goes with 4 DEs (Maybin, Schobel, Ellis, Denney) instead of 5.

Roscoe

The surprise subtraction from the Bills roster may well be Roscoe Parrish, who would likely depart in a trade rather than an actual cut. He is pretty disgruntled about not getting much playing time on offense — something that would if anything get worse this year with the emergence of Johnson and possibly Hardy — and the team probably would prefer not to have him around if he feels that way. Also, sending Roscoe off would make it possible to keep Justin Jenkins as the sixth receiver, which would make Bobby April very happy. As for punt returns, anyone who has the benefit of April’s superb blocking schemes will make good yardage as a returner (although perhaps not quite as much as Roscoe)

by Macktruck on Aug 22, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How could you say it would make April happy?

Would keeping Jenkins be a lot worse than keeping Roscoe?

ROSCOE is not going no were fast, and the BILLS know that, IM going to take a chance and say one of the DB because we have plenty in that department . But I can say Macargo but I THINK THIS GUY is cheep and this is going to be his last chance to do his THING what ever that is, DENNY AND KELSEY will stay because the true we need all the help we can get in the front and the bills know that to . kelsay

last year kelsay was just awful! there is no denying that, but I’ve noticed he looks thinner & alittle quicker this year….maybe he will surprize us….we alos suck against the run, & he was preety good at it last year….hell of a lot better than schobel….he’s one of few bills that had some solid hard tackles last year…i know he’s extremely overpaid…like all our D-line is why the hell did they give stroud a raise, he’s clearly our best lineman but was due 6.5 mill before the extension. i thought that was one of the few good moves the bills made & they turn around & blow it….sigh

I’ll guess there won’t be any surprise cuts this year (as long as Youboty stays healthy). We’ve already seen a couple of surprises in the timing of the Costanzo cut and Ryan Neill sent packing. And I don’t see anybody who could potentially be cut that would come as a surprise.

Looking back, Buffalo didn’t really have a surprise cut last year. Will James looked very safe in early August, but as the cut date approached, everybody thought he was on the fence. The other noteworthy cuts from last year (Dwayne Wright, Jon Spragan, Blake Costanzo, Jason Jefferson, Corey Mace, Patrick Estes, Christian Gaddis, Nevin McCaskill, Courtney Anderson, Tim Massequoi) couldn’t have been any more predictable.

Buffalo did make some surprise cuts in 2007. They cut Craig Nall who was supposed to be the backup until Trent’s stellar preseason. They only kept 2 QBs and they kept 5 RBs which was stranger than anybody could have predicted (and it also means don’t rule out 6 DEs, 11 DBs or even 7 WRs even though I think they’re all a little crazy). Terrance Pennington was a shocking cut, but go figure, the guy who got his spot, Kirk Chambers, has been pretty solid. And Ryan Neill over Mike Schneck was a decision that a lot of Bills fans have never agreed with.
