TMQ - A look at the Bills
Greg Easterbrook, breaks down the AFC in his preview. In it, he highlights Buffalo's ultra-conservative offense, their conservative coach and OC, and comments on their amazing special teams. No matter how you slice it, if Buffalo cannot produce points, and in bunches, this team is no different than any other Dick Jauron team.

I will disagree with that Marv. This team can be very aggressive, (very un-Jauron like) and still not score may points. Typically being more aggressive is linked to scoring more points, but that isn’t always the case. This team can, and I believe will, do many things different on offense. Whether it results in points or not is another matter.
For the life of me I can’t figure out why nobody talks about the size of the cajones it took on Jauron’s part to go to the no-huddle offense. That in and of itself is a big change from the conservative Dick Jauron we all know.

point taken
but either trent is being coached to check it down all the time, or the WR’s aren’t getting open. either way that is a problem. Trent holds the ball for WAAAAAAAAAAAy to long historically in his short career, and the timing between him and his WR’s has never been efficient. And if it doesn’t change this year, he is going to get himself killed. Jauron hitched his horse to Edwards. You gotta realize Jauron lets Turk run the offense….Jauron is NOT an offensive coach, and hopes his OC can get it done. Sure he went to the no-huddle, that’s great, but nothing to right home about if it ends in 7-9

I think going to the no-huddle shows that Jauron recognized that he needed to do something different, and gambled. I think that shows that he isn’t as conservative as many make him out to be. Your right, if the results aren’t there, it means squat.
Personally i think the check downs are more on Trent and the WRs. Not Jauron and the offense.

The no-huddle isn’t exactly aggressive though. It’s just something different, and probably a mask for a poor OL and QB who seems to struggle when he’s thinking too much.
If we’re still seeing punts on 4th and 1 from midfield or up the middle runs, it’ll still be the same old conservative Jauron. I don’t expect to see his coaching style changed at all this year.

Jauron isn’t calling the plays. He would be the one to decide about 4th and short at midfield but not the runs up the middle. I get that he’s ultimately responsible but won’t it be Turk and Trent calling that run?

So Jauron has no input? He can’t tell Turk/Trent that he doesn’t want specific plays called in specific situations?

I’m sure he could but Jauron’s M.O. is generally to let his coaches coach.

Is that the same no huddle we saw vs the Packers????? Because that no huddle didn't have big cojones.

The idea of the no-huddle and the risk of wearing down your defense to try and gain an advantage on offense it what took cojones.

And if only the head coach were as good as the special teams coach.
Honestly, wouldn’t it make sense to make Bobby April the lead candidate if Jauron is ever fired.

next year is a good oppertunity to
sign a big name HC.
T.O. is one thing, but to bring in a new HC and to give him a new high profile vet or rookie QB would be the move this team needs to make in order to turn itself around.

yes
and I believe it is due to attitude pure and simple. If i don’t see that this year, i will certainly welcome the change in attitude. New QB? I like the idea, evn though I really like Edwards, but if he fails he fails. Otherwise, i really like our roster and another solid draft with a coach who wants to kick major ass and hit other teams in the mouth is just what the doctor ordered

I was waiting for this to be posted
Easterbrook just says it like it is. His simple "Dick “Cheerio Chaps” Jauron" is the straight and to the point.
He’s been riding Jauron for the last year. Every other analyst out there calls Jauron a great coach, but only includes “the players love playing for him”.
Easterbrook rides him for every in game decision and our lack of toughness.
Love the part about the jersey changes from the colors of the american flag. Priceless.

I Love TMQ
Greg Easterbrook has been one of my favorite columnists to read for some time now. He really knows the game of football and provides a pretty unique perspective on a lot of issues (football and otherwise). He is not afraid to critique anyone or anything and pulls no punches when it comes to football, economics, science, technology, politics, etc.
I would LOVE to see some NFL team implement his ideas about always going for it on 4th down except in certain situation. He contends that punting is usually a way for lilly-livered coaches to avoid post-game criticism. I am over simplifying but if you search his archives on ESPN.com; i highly recommend doing so.

Easterbrook has the Bills to a T
What his fake Tweets in game would look like:
• Bills have first-and-goal on Patriots’ 1, lined up shotgun, incompletion.
• Bills have second-and-goal on Patriots’ 1, lined up shotgun, incompletion.
• Bills have third-and-goal on Patriots’ 1, lined up shotgun, incompletion.
• Bills have fourth-and-goal on Patriots’ 1 and punted.
Also this:
“Football Scientist” K.C. Joyner — what does his laboratory look like? — says that in 2008, 75 percent of Buffalo’s passing attempts covered 10 yards or less. The Bills threw more than 10 yards the second-lowest amount in the NFL.
Goes with our idea that Edwards needs to go downfield A LOT more.
The team’s embarrassing streak of no-playoff seasons will continue if the offense doesn’t stop being so predictable and throw down the field. In 2008, the Bills failed to score a touchdown in three of their final five contests; they scored a total of six points in their final three home games. A reason was hyperconservative play calling.
No doubt about it….
And if only the head coach were as good as the special teams coach.
Until the Bills have a coach who doesn’t make excuses, the embarrassing playoff drought will continue.
Love that someone outside of Bills fans is saying it….
