Sneaky Jauron and Elusive Edwards...Call me Crazy.
Ok guys, Trent Edwards appears to suck. I've heard that. Over and over and over again. I think everyone needs to take a step back for a second, however. While I do not think Edwards is the reincarnation of Kelly, I still believe he is what we need right now. For a few reasons.
First, keep in mind the Bills have only played a few preseason games against actual opponents with a completely different Offensive Line and a whole new game plan. The no-huddle isn't for quarterbacks with low intelligence and little athletic ability. We all know Edwards is smart. He went to Stanford for crying out loud. He also has the athletic capabilities to take this team far. We've seen him outrun defenses and make those long bombs to Lee Evans. Defenses may have ruffled his feathers a bit this preseason, but that's to be expected when the play-calling and the players are new around him. Give him a bit of a break.
Second, while watching the game, I thought I was seeing it in slow motion. Why? Because the players looked as though they were slacking. Many of them weren't even at full speed. Then and there I wanted to turn the channel, though my love for the Bills prevents such blasphemy from happening, no matter how bad they look. The Bills always seem to be plagued with injuries. Has it occurred to anyone that they may be just taking it easy, having fun? They know, through practices, what plays they need to make. They also realize preseason is completely meaningless. Why risk an injury, especially knowing the Patriots game is the first of the season? People who deal with and work for the public are great actors. Football players are no different. So Trent throws an interception and he looks perturbed. On the field, maybe. But he has to in front of the fans and media. I think preseason is a waste of time and very risky. I would think most coaches agree with me.
Finally, everyone here seems to think that Dick Jauron is an idiot. Well, not me. He's as clever as they come. He knows he is in the hot seat this year and has completely changed the offense this year because of it. No one would bring in T.O. if they weren't serious about winning. Which brings me to my point. I read the article the other day about how the whole AFC East is sneaky. Their tactics are shady and they work from behind the scenes. What makes anyone think Jauron is any different? He knows what he's doing guys. Why were the reports coming out of camp and practices so positive but the preseason is nothing but a mess? If you ask me, I think it's because Jauron is hiding things. He wants teams to underestimate us. After all, we always play better as under dogs flying under the radar.
I just can't grasp how we regressed so quickly. That's why I'm not buying it. We all know Trent is not nearly as bad as he's been playing. He's still learning a new offense and learning to work with a different line, but by no means has his abilities decreased that much to warrant comparing him to Harrington or Losman. People are so quick to jump down the guy's throat and the regular season hasn't even started yet! Dick Jauron is a smart man. And you can laugh at that all you want but I stick by my words. The Bills are not putting all of their cards on the table for meaningless preseason games. I would even argue that they're playing terrible on purpose. Call me crazy.
The fact of the matter is, guys, we need to give our signal caller a little break. None of us knows what is going on behind the scenes. Trent is a better quarterback than what we've been seeing. So let's wait until regular season before advocating for every Tom, Dick, and Harry to take his place. Ok?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I asked the question last night
I agree that it is almost unbelievable that Trent would have regressed to this point and it really seems fishy. Buddy I hope your theory is true and we will find out soon enough.
Still, I question the logic of playing your starters for a complete half if you really think it’s risky and you want to avoid injuries. Maybe it’s to better selll their ruse… Sept 14th baby! That’s when all the chips will be on the table!
Your ability to control the LOS is directly linked to your ability to win football games!
FEED the BEAST!
that's what they want you to think
DUN DUN DUN
It’s really fishy to play your starters over half of the third game if you’re just throwing the game…
Eh
I think if they didn’t play their starters for the first 2-3 quarters like everyone else in the league, that would be fishy.

Yea I saw

I hope your right, but I woulndn't bet on it
Dick Jauron is a smart man
No one is debating that. The question is….Is he a good coach? I am leaning heavily toward No.
The Bills are not putting all of their cards on the table .
I don’t want them to put all their cards on the table, put I do want them to know when it is their turn to play.
for meaningless preseason games
The score of the game might be meaningless, but for most teams, the preseason is not meaningless. They use it to iron out the rough spots, sharpen up their game, take it for a test drive…. you know……get their team ready to play when it does count. The Bills appear to be regressing instead of progressing.
Their tactics are shady and they work from behind the scenes.
I don’t know of any coach in the league whose plan for the preseason is to make their offense look like a complete disaster, and their QB to look like he is about to wet his pants. If that is his plan, Jauron should be fired on the spot.
Has it occurred to anyone that they may be just taking it easy, having fun?
If so, BAD IDEA. You play like you practice.

There is no way that a coach fighting for his job is going to concoct some crazy plan to throw the preseason. His team needs all the help they can get and playing less than sharp football is not exactly a way to prepare your team for the season.

I think Jauron is smarter than we think he is
And we aren’t showing everything. But I can’t believe the Bills would scooby doo the whole thing and look bad just to throw other teams off.
You heard how disappointed the players sounded in the post-game. Did Jauron instruct them to act that way, did Jauron want Edwards to throw a pick 6 on purpose?
I just can’t believe that, because Jauron hasn’t had a precedent of doing stuff like that.
Edwards last season also had games during the season last year where he was very skiddish and checked down constantly too.
I wouldn’t call you crazy because it’s a good idea, I just am not sure it is happening. Also I think the Bills aren’t going to be as bad offensively as they were in this game I don’t think again unless they get injuries.
And also...
Jauron doens’t have a precedent of doing stuff like that. Exactly why I think he’s doing it now…to throw off the Bill “Mad Scientist” Belichick and the rest of the East. Like I said about desperate times…

I really believe that they will be better than advertised so far. And no, I don’t think the INT was staged. But I don’t believe they are too worried either.
Players may have been slightly disappointed, but like I said, they are actors in the public eye as well. They have to up their emotions whenever they can.

How is that believable?
Jauron is fighting for his job and the majority of players are fighting for a roster spot or PT. And your telling that they are doing this on purpose? Thats just plain ridiculous. You think that Jauron wants negative media attention? I believe that Jauron is doubting himself at this point and looking for any excuse to maintain the fan base. Lets face it, Jauron was hired for two reasons: one, to get us back to respectability and two, because he is cheap.
We have been rebuilding for 10 years now and other than our secondary, I still have a hard time feeling confident about any specific part of our team. I guess you can throw in special teams, but they have had me concerned as well this pre season.
I’m not as soured on Edwards as I was. He didn’t have as bad of a night as I thought he did.

the players seem to play slow
because that’s how they practice. no live hitting, no tackling drills. how do the coaches expect the players to go through a relatively light camp and “turn it on” for games? you play the way you practice and we are seeing it with this team.
Jauron has no master plan of hiding his great scheme to take the league by storm. He by no means is an idiot but what you see is what you get from him. conservative play calling dictated by not making mistakes and the defense playing bend but don’t break between the 20’s and only allowing fg’s most of the time.
Jauron’s way of offense has permeated Edwards and now he is in survival mode, doing what the coaches want him to do. It is so blatantly obvious that teams have no respect for the Bills down the field play ability. It is non-existent so to think that there is some sort of contrived plan that will be unleashed come Sept. 14th is wishful thinking.
Wishful thinking indeed. But I guess you can call this a gut feeling for me. And usually my intuitions are right. Cross your fingers, I guess?

Preseason
I’ve seen the Bills have good preseasons and I’ve seen them have bad. For the most part, it’s had no measurable bearing on the regular season record. I agree that it’s not worth getting worked up about. I think the most worrisome aspect of the preseason has been Trent’s seeming lack of confidence. The two most important parts of the preseason are to remain injury-free (which we’ve done pretty good at so far, except for TO) and to have confidence going into the regular season.
On the other hand, I know we’d all love to see Trent play really well and make DJ look like a genius, but let’s not forget that we were playing against the Steelers. You know, the reigning Super Bowl champions. In their home stadium. Their defense can make just about anybody look bad.
However, I don’t believe that the Bills, or any other team, would ever intentionally throw even a meaningless preseason game. They’re still professionals and a lot of them still have many reasons to still play hard. I’d really be disappointed if I ever found out that DJ, or any other Bill, wasn’t doing their best to prepare.

This topic could lead into a separate post
Game Planning for the Patriots. For example: Do we want to get into a passing game with the Patriots? Or do we want to run the ball against them. Do we want Brady on the field more or less than Edwards? So much focus on Edwards and our Offense’s inability to move the ball maybe we are going in the wrong direction here. This preseason leaves alot of unanswered questions regarding our plan for Sept 14. Maybe we are drawing defenses so close to the line that we are leaving the deep middle open. Maybe the check downs are setting up the RB’s to bust through the LOS for big gains. Leave it to a Femalefanatic to create the most obvious thought.

Interesting thoughts. I do think the pre season playbook extra small and extra vanilla this year. While in Rochester on vacation I did attend a practice. The execution was much more impressive than what I have been seeing in the games.
Why not Bobby April?
That's partly why
I wrote this. I though were doing great in practice.
Wearing my Bills jersey to the Eagles-Bills game in Philly probably wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done. But then again, that's why they call me die-hard.

The hard part about judging how they’re playing in practice is that they’re only playing against their own team.
In general terms, a mediocre offense will look good sometimes against its own mediocre defense, and vice versa.
It will remain to be seen until the reg season starts how the Bills units fare against other teams. I’m optimistic, but not overly.

practice
On the other hand, our defense knows our plays and tendencies better than anyone. When you can execute vs. someone who knows whats coming…
Why not Bobby April?
That’s why I think that the Bills should switch to 3-4 defense, because that way the offense would be able to practice against it day in and day out. Then maybe when they played against a 3-4 in a game, they wouldn’t be so bad. Isn’t Maybin supposed to be better in a 3-4 anyways?
Everyone else
seems to go the 3-4 route in our division, why not us? Right? Maybe because our LB’s are too light….

because of DJ and Fewell – they want the Tampa 2.
We need a coordinator that has 3-4 experience if we want to run that. Not to mention the NT and LB’s to play the scheme.
I’m a fan of the 3-4. But in reality – what ever works is best. If that’s 11 DB’s on the field and it’s getting 3 and outs then i’m fine with it
I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying
