rivalries
This topic has probably been discussed a lot, but i just read an article about rivalries in the nfl, and i started thinking about the bills. i know that throughout our history the dolphins have been our most storied and heated rival, but im wondering if, at least recently, the patriots have taken that role. I don't know about everyone else, but my intense and everlasting hatred for the Patriots started when I was 11 and started getting really into the NFL, and hasn't stopped since. I'm just interested in hearing what other people think about this potential rivalry as we approach a new decade, and hopefully a more successful one in terms of actually beating the Pats.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I think a rivalry involves animosity on both sides. The Dolphins and Bills have played some epic games throughout the years. I hate the Patriots, but only for the way they’ve dominated us throughout this past decade.
Bryan Cox running out giving Bills fans the middle finger is a rivalry. Getting repeatedly stomped on is not.

As a Dolphin fan I stop by here from time to time....
a rivalry involves animosity on both sides
I really have no animosity for the Bills. If the Phins weren’t able to win the division, I’d root for Buffalo. I despise the Jets because they’re loud-mouth wanna-be-badasses and the Patriots because, well, they cheated and pretty much got away with it.
As an outsider I think much more highly of the fanchise in WNY than the ones in the Meadowlands and Foxboro.

Interesting
One of the few things that has made this past decade bearable is the glee I feel at seeing the Dolphins screw up.

When the Dolphins had Marino, and the Bills had Kelly, then it was a rivalry.
For the most part, I feel the same as you but from a Bills fan’s perspective. I’d much rather see the Dolphins succeed before the Jets or Pats.

so when the Fins were pounding the Bills on a regular basis in the 70s,
it wasn’t a rivalry? Clearly you were not in the stands my friend!

The question is, did the Dolphins consider it a rivalry? I lived through those days, but I’m hard-pressed to recall if the Dolphins and their fans thought of it as a rivalry back then.

Really?
Do the Dolphins even have fans? I should say, do they even have fans after the 3rd quarter?

I guess I can't speak for Fins fans,
but it seemed Iike the hatred went both ways.

Yes, the Pats are number 1
I say this because, in rebuttal to Mark Parisi, the Dolphins rivalry was built on being beaten to hell throughout the 70s, and then the Bills finally winning one after like 20 or so straight losses. Now, it then heated up when both teams became equals, and this “might” happen in the future and I hope it does. I hate the pats more than any team in football, and want to steam roll them every time…even though we only suffer disappointment in ever more terrible ways.
The Bills CAN win any game

Yes, the record in the 70s is a strong point and one I’m quick to ignore since it was before I was born! I think Bill-Patirots could turn into a great rivalry if Buffalo can step up and actually go toe-to-toe with the Patriots now. If the Bills are angry about getting smeared for 10 years and the Pats know they’re going to get a dogfight everytime they play us, those games will quickly grow into the charged affairs the old Bills-Dolphins games were, I think.

And right now...
Since we just got swept by all three teams, the time is now for some pay back. I hope these players are as amped for those games as the fans will be.

I hate the rest of the AFC East, fairly and equally. A lot of hate fairly and equally distributed.
But I agree with Mark, rivalries are not made when the other team is indifferent to you.
It also sucks that I live in NYC now, have lived in Boston and my girlfriend’s family lives in Miami. I want my hometurf back!

The Bills were 0-for-the ’70s vs the Fish.
Plus, are there two cites that are home to NFL teams that are as different then Buffalo and Miami?

I think the Dolphins are our most hated rival because of that 10 year span where we couldn’t beat them. That was (relitivly) early in our team’s history and enchrined the Phins as our most hated rival. But for that same reason, the Pats are reaching a simular level of hatred in reacent years. I just hope that we can finally beat the Pats this year. A MNF win against them would be HUGE.
P.S. I hate the Phins more then i hate the Pats. Heck I do think that I hate the Pats so much as I’m entirely jelous of how successfull they are and how the team is operated. As much as I hate (and the term is accurate now) Billecheat, I have great admiration for his ability to run a great football team.

To me it will always be the Fins
I know most of you weren’t around during the 70’s, but I was and it was bitter. I almost cheered for them once two years ago when they were pathetic, just couldn;t do it. With Parcells running the show makes it worse, cuz I hate him too.
Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

I'm not old enough to have witnessed the beatdowns of the 70s
and I still hate the Phins more than any other team in the AFC East. I’ve had bad experiences with their fans, I remember QB battles in the earlier 90s, I remember Ricky Williams slashing us up in the snow for 200+ yards, I hate how musicians and celebrities buy shares of their team, and I just get amped up during games against them.
The Jets and Pats basically tie for second after that but I think the Jets get the nod. At least the Jets fans are real so I respect them enough to hate them more.
Believe me, a bunch of my college buddies were from Boston and I know more about their team before Tom Brady appeared than they do and thats just from watching the Bills play them over the years, they are pathetic. Boston fans just crawl to whatever team is doing well at the time and proclaim their fandom. I can’t wait till they get knocked off their perch with Brady playing.

good points poz
I am old enough to actually remember the 20 straight losses to the fins that was the 70’s in Buffalo.
I think they are still our key rivals given cultural differences between the 2 cities – AND the fact that Ralph wa sthinking of putting our franchise their first in 1960!

Dolphins without a doubt
Ten years, twenty games, and now run by a tuna. Not until the franchise Won/Loss is a little more even will I consider hating a team worse. Losing to them twice last year was, well that was last year. Time to move on, I know this, they don’t scare anyone.

Dolphins...
Seriously, I can’t believe this is even a conversation…everyone hates the fish…
I love yelling “squish the fish” in Miami just to hear some drunk redneck yell back…“a dolphin isn’t a fish”…
Priceless.

The other reason I hate miami is that they turned down Ralph Wilson for a team. We would have never had the Bills in Buffalo if not for Miami turning Ralph down and then changing their minds a few years later.

because of them Buffalo has the Bills
