2009 Bills Training Camp: Day 13 Open Thread

We are just two short Buffalo Bills training camp practices away from the Bills' first pre-season game of the 2009 season.  (And one of those practices, which takes place on Saturday morning, isn't even open to the public.)  With a busy Bills Saturday looming in Canton, Ohio, we'll focus for one more day on Bills practice before the exciting weekend starts.

Updates are forthcoming in the comments; the workout starts at 2:25 PM.  We'll recap later on this afternoon.

I don’t think much will be happening in this practice but any news about the battle between the O and D line would be nice.

Now, that’s just silly. I think it would be better off if they had the DE trying to tag the DB

look at that Donte is actually trying to make a play.

by eze on Aug 7, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Trying to make a play has never been a problem for Donte. He’s always just a step behind, whether it be for a pass breakup or an interception. The difference between Whitner and Pro Bowlers and possible future Hall of Famers like Reed and Polamalu is that they are in the right place to make those plays and pick off those tipped passes. Rarely do you see a ball tipped high in the air hit the ground against Baltimore or the Steelers, but that seems to be a regular occurrence against this team. If the team can’t be opportunistic on both sides of the ball, mediocrity will continue to follow.

The good thing to take from that is

Anyone who leads the league in dropped passes for multiple years must have lots of balls thrown his way.
Thus, he must be a pretty awesome receiver to have passes thrown his way DESPITE the league-leading drops.

You’re really reaching for that ray of sunshine. If Owens caught all the passes he dropped the team would probably throw to him just as often if not more.

Matt or Brian

has this years camp been any more physical then in years past? I have a big problem with the “country club” atmosphere of Jauron’s camps. I don’t want full contact every practice but it’s important to work on tackling, blocking as if it were a game type situation(minus cuts, etc.).

Thank god we got an extra game to toughen these guys up. Geez, never heard of such a thing as half tackling.

by eze on Aug 7, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

“Geez, never heard of such a thing as half tackling.”

It’s called “thud” where you form tackle a guy and wrap up but stay off the ground. This avoids injuries especially to the knees and legs. Every NFL and major college football team and most smart high school teams will do this. Just like you don’t want an offensive lineman cutting one of your own d lineman you don’t want a LB or DB going low on a back or reciever to make a tackle during practice. Kind of teh same logic as why QB’s where red jersey’s…. Teams will have live segements but it usually in a goal line setting, limiting the potential for injury.

Please show me where you come up with the statement taht this is teh worst tackling defenses in the league Gatornation. I know your beloved Gators used thud technique a lot.

as a matter of curiosity, how do you suggest tackling should be practised?

Football. Bloody Hell!!

by gregeng on Aug 7, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve suggested that the team get a bunch of fatboys off of barstools in order to let the offensive linemen practice cutting—which Buffalo’s linemen have been terrible at for the past several years….possibly because they don’t practice it.

by Ron From NM on Aug 8, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I never said that tackling wasn’t practiced and that they never go live. What I said was that no team goes live every play from scrimmage in every practice. Playing the game of football is not only about athletic ability but it is also about technique and scheme. Going “thud” allows guys to concentrate more on their assignments and techniques then just worrying about getting the guy with the ball on the ground.

This is not Pop Warner, these guys have been playing football a long time and have made many tackles in their career, so I’m not sure they need to be taught how to tackle but maybe given a few pointers and refeshers on the fundamentals.

I’ll say it again, no team with a coach with half a brain is going to go live all the time. Lets see our 3rd string gaurd go at and blow out the knee of Marcus Stroud because he is cut blocking and then you will all be saying what an idiot the Coach is for going live. Our own rookie OL stated in his press conference that you don’t do that to teammates and most of you are commenting on how nasty and tough he is.

that’s why this team is one of the worst tackling defenses in the league. hard to get better if you don’t practice in “live” settings.

where everyone runs a 40 in 5 flat or less and can end your career at any given moment of any given play? did you have a 365 pound left tackle lead blocking on a screen pass? save some for the second half huh? when it gets too tough for them, it’s just right for us ;)
