Bills part ways with six players, sign TE DeVree
The Buffalo Bills have officially announced that they have parted ways with six players as well as signed one to reach the NFL's league-mandated roster maximum of 75 players.
The team has waived OT Chris Denman and WR Shaine Smith, as well as placed three players - TE Travis McCall, CB Lydell Sargeant and DT Marcus Smith - on the waived/injured list. LB Solomon Elimimian was released.
WR James Hardy remains on the Active PUP list.
The Bills also signed free agent TE Tyson DeVree, an undrafted free agent in 2008 that spent training camp with the New England Patriots. The 6'6", 245-pound DeVree spent most of the season on the practice squad.
Buffalo now has 75 players on its active roster, including Hardy. The team will take the field for their final pre-season contest on Thursday, and then the Bills must trim the roster to 53 by 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 5.

Bah, I was close. I got McCall and Sargeant; missed on Manalac and Hennessey (had the right position, though!). I don’t think I’ve ever been half right before on the first cuts. Gonna be a good year.

“Hey, Tyson… we were wondering. How does Brady’s knee look? Does he ever wince throwing at practice? Is he healthy? Are we screwed?”
“Yeah, he’s good, man. Very healthy. He’s amazing, actually… I tried to get an apartment with him, but forgot he was married. I’m gonna miss his scent. And his musk.”
“… dammit. Here’s your pink slip.”

I was really hoping that Hardy would get out there for the final preseason game. Looks like his whole season will essentially be lost to injury. I can’t imagine him working his way up the depth chart at this point.
I kept telling everyone here that most people need a year before they truly come back from a knee injury
If he comes back in week 6 he will be close to the year, and will start out slow but should pick it up before end of season. BUT, that all depends on how our WRs are doing, if Scuba Steve is tearing the field up Hardy will probably be PUP’ed the whole season since we won’t need him and April will probably lobby hard to keep Jenkins on the field.

Why are they bringing in a TE now? Is this guy supposed to be a good blocker? PS TE maybe? Probably?

DeVree is probably little more than cannon fodder. The Bills pretty much know what they in their other tight ends. DeVree will probably get some second half action to keep the other TE’s out of harms way.

That was my guess when I saw that
I figure they want to keep Nelson out of harm’s way and with Fine most likely sitting out another game (pure guess on my part) I think they just needed a body this week.

Heading into Thursday’s preseason game knowing Schouman would probably not see much time being a starter, they needed another tight end to help get them through the game.
You wonder just how serious Fine’s hamstring injury might be.
That's from Chris Brown - still figuring out this comment thing...
And I think that right there – Fine’s injury insures Stupar of making the team…
Stupar
SHOULD make this roster. I was thinking that they could do away w/ the FB position and go HB AGAIN, (I know..) – but that allows us to hang onto Stupar and NOT allow him to get picked up by another franchise while sitting on the PS. He’s too good to just let walk IMO.

Did CB make a slip here? Or are BOTH, Shou AND Fine hurting? News to me. I knew about Fine’s hammy, but I wasn’t aware that Shouman was injured at all.
Please enlighten……..

He means that since the Lions game is the last preseason most of the starters (Schouman is the starting TE) won’t see much game time if any at all. As a result the back up TE will see a lot of playing time. That leaves Stupar/Nelson for most of the game, and though Nelson tries hard, he isn’t a good blocker (yet).
Thanks
I didn’t read CB’s report there. I can buy that about the starters. I have NO problem getting Nelson more reps though. He needs every rep we can get him. He def needs more time blocking, but at the same time, I’d also like to see him succeed in the receiving end too. Even if it’s w/ the 2’s & 3’s fihting for jobs. It’s still experience. I’m high on him (as a receiving TE/Slot)……. AND, I’m also good w/ Stupar getting more time in too! He’s been pretty decent in the PS games so far w/ the exception of last week. One wouldn’t even know he was in there.
Wasn’t it Nelson that missed the block on ST’s during the attempted Field Goal In Pitt?

Does Devree have PS eligibility?
I think the Bills let Sargent go now so that they can sign him to the PS. sometimes guys get let go early in the hopes that he will slip through the cracks and nobody else will pick him up.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
I’m guessing he wouldn’t exactly be a priority pickup for any team….I’m not sure I’d be looking into the Sargent release that much….

He’s also from Penn State, and we’ve been accumulating a lot of those. Frankly, I’m surprised we don’t have a PSU DB on the team yet.
Though, I’m obviously not complaining.

Wait, now I’m really confused. I missed the last line of the story.
They cut LB Solomon Elimimian to make room for DeVree.
… why?

More TE's
for the Lion’s game maybe? How many LB’s do we need on the PS?

Nope, missed the point. They now have 74 players on the active roster. Hardy doesn’t count.
The only thing I can guess is that Hardy is close to returning, and they’re saving the spot for him.

Or perhaps the equipment manager ran out of “o’s” and “i’s” for jersey nameplates and needed some extras.
So easy Marshawn Lynch can do it.

Maybe they have their eye on someone they think will be cut from another team, and are leaving a roster spot open for the guy they like.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
They’ve had a roster spot open for the better part of a month, though. They’ve had 79 for weeks. I can’t understand why they’d do that, unless Hardy does count against the active roster. If he does, then they must have different PUP rules between pre-season and regular season.

And this is why Google is my friend.
Hardy’s on Active PUP, meaning that he does, in fact, count against the 80-man roster.
So every time I’ve reported here that the team would only need to lose a net of four players, I was wrong. My apologies. :)

So let me get this straight; They cut 6 guys and signed DeVree, and now much the max 75 guys on their roster. Is that correct?

DeVree = insurance policy?
Hmm, I wonder if this means we’re cutting Stupar and are trying to slip him onto PS with DeVree going to the PS if Stupar is picked up by another team.
Releases
Is there a difference in the way all of the players were cut. Some were waived, some released and some injured/waived. Whats the difference between all of these?
Waived is waived. Waived/injured is waived/injured. Released is released.
… I don’t know. Either way, they’re not on the roster anymore. :)

anybody who is waived/injured is getting an injury settlement. A team isn’t supposed to release an injured player, so the team is responsible to pay any injured player until they are healthy. Obviously a team isn’t going to send a paycheck to a released player until the player claims he is healthy, so the team and player agree to a certain amount of days when the player is released.
Waive vs. release has to do with tenure in the league. I’m not sure how much experience a player needs to go from one to the other, but veteran players get released and are free to go and sign with any other team. Younger players have to go through waivers.
