not a bad move, he's better than Walker or Butler at RT
gives us option of moving Butler back to RG during season and be able to run block better
I would prefer a line with left to right as:
Bell – Hangagartner – Wood – Butler – Runyan

the odd man out
here is Levitre. Butler being moved back to his natural position probably would be good, but Butler hasn’t been too bad out there. And Levitre really shows alot of promise but what he needs is more playing time. I know the Oline is a mess right now, but if we bench Levitre now we really curtail that kid’s growth.

Guard isn’t Butler’s “natural” position. He obviously has played there the last few years in the nfl, but was a tackle in college and at 6’7’’ is more likely a natural RT.

Thank you....
I’ve been saying since his first start at RG he should be a RT.

That’s interesting.
First thing’s first, folks – a Runyan signing wouldn’t change anything along the line. It’s Bell/Levitre/Hangartner/Wood/Butler or bust.
I like the idea of looking for veteran depth considering the inexperience of the line, but the key word there is depth.
At the very least, he’s an upgrade over Jonathan Scott, but I think it’s difficult to expect him to be anything more than that.

thing with Runyan
is having him as depth isn’t going to work. We get him he’s our starting RT, that’s just how his personality is.

On Runyan’s attitude:
Also, he’s not going to want to be a backup. He never has and it’s just not in his nature. Maybe at first while he tries to get back in shape… but soon he’s going to want to play every down. He’s been saying all summer that if the Eagles were to sign him back that he’d win the starting right tackle job no matter who he faced. Again though, that competitive attitude works for him.
But I think right now there isn’t enough time even if we got him to have him start so I don’t know I guess it will depend on if he can swallow his pride.

I’ll add that the fact that the Eagles showed any interest in him is a good sign. That to me implies that he still may have something to offer. I imagine even at 36 he’s still very strong. Speed and DURABILITY are the main concern at this point.

But your last sentence is spot on. If Walker was cut for that reason, would we sign Runyan? He’s got to be able to keep up with the pace of the O, which from reports is getting quicker by the practice.

Typical for the Bills
They kick the tires a lot… Fans should not get excited over Runyun coming in. Virtually means nothing. Almost like this:
John Guy: Hi John, how are you feeling?
Runyun: Good… like I am ready to start at tackle in this league.
Guy: Well good to hear, We just wanted to meet you face to face and let you know that if you don’t sign anywhere else and we get screwed because we have no depth on our roster that we could be calling you up to come play. Are you interested in that?
Runyun: When do we order our dinner?
Guy: Thanks for coming in, enjoy your meal on us.

Given Butler’s propensity to be injured at least once a season, this would be a great depth signing. But seriously, Runyan wants to start, not sit and I think Chambers is more than serviceable. Hopefully, they’re just kicking the tires and making Runyan’s agent happy by making him look desirable.

Runyan will sign where ever the best situation/money is and that might actually be in Buffalo as a backup behind the least experienced LT in the league and a bit of an injury prone RT.
That said, I doubt Buffalo would be willing to really let him compete with their starters and that Runyan would sign here. I doubt this goes anywhere, but you never know. It wouldn’t be the first time Buffalo surprised us. People should also understand that Runyan is actually a couple of weeks older than TO and was never particularly athletic. He would be a disaster at LT, so I’m not sure why Buffalo would strongly consider him.

I guess this all comes down to how the coaches see Butler working out at RT. They obviously didn’t like Walker at LT (or at all, apparently) and kept a pretty tight lid on it. If they have similar feelings about Butler we could be in for another surprise cut before the Patriots game. With Chambers ready to step in for Bell if he is still injured and/or can’t cut it the Bills don’t have anyone to step in for Butler when/if he gets hurt.
As for Runyan, I’m sure the guy wants to play. However, sitting on a bench and counting millions of dollars has got to have some kind of appeal as well.

i don’t think he will want to sit, I’m pretty sure he is looking to play. And its not irrelevant based on this coaching staffs way of thinking. For all you know they might think they can play him at left tackle, probably not but they’re dumb enough to thihnk that. They “probably” do want him as depth but I don’t think he will settle for a back-up spot.
by csc06258 on Sep 10, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I’m telling you it is irrelevant. Kirk Chambers is the backup left tackle, and he can swing. They’re looking at Runyan as a backup right tackle, who could swing in to guard in a pinch, and if he doesn’t want to do that, they won’t sign him. It’s really that simple. Trust me – there’s no hidden conspiracy here.

Jon Runyan has never played a game at left tackle in his pro career. He wouldn’t have been a good fit there when he was 25 and that was 10 years ago. He would be an instant and probably drastic downgrade over Bell or even Chambers.

Jones is done IMO. His knees are shot.
As for the drafting a LT. If we do it will be bescause Bell spectacularly bombed. With or without our current HC next year Bell should be enough to prevent the draft of a LT. If we pick in the top 5 picks, I would anticipate a QB.

If, and I say if, DJ isn’t here next year, I want a very defensive minded HC.
When Chuck Knox came to Buffalo his first draft went like this: #1 overall pick Tom Cousineau, (who then GM Stew Barber failed to sign) Jerry Butler, Fred Smerlas, Jim Haslett. That is the kind of draft I would love. That said, if the Bills do have a new coach and a top 5 pick next year I want 2 studs for the defensive line. Give me Carlos Dunlap, Gerald McCoy, or Terrence Cody. Forget the QB via draft, I would rather go after a vet via trade or FA.

If there is absolutely zero chance that he’s going to push Butler for a starting spot (which it seems), and the Bills don’t intend for some reason to move Butler or Runyan to guard, then Runyan doesn’t fit here. If anything, we need interior linemen, not tackles, for depth at this point. After all, we have Chambers and Scott who can play the two tackle positions. At the three interior positions, we have Seth ‘Walking Holding Penalty’ McKinney and Chambers, who could fill in in a pinch. He’s only played inside this preseason.

This is – as Brian spot on points out – a matter of perhaps adding a venerable veteran RT as depth, who could perhaps teach some of the young guys some tricks about how to be effective in the NFL. That’s it
