NFL Week 1: Buffalo Rumblings Author Picks

We've arrived, folks.  The 2009 NFL regular season is upon us.  Your long, arduous wait through the off-season is over.  For the next 21 weeks, Sundays will pass by the way they're meant to - with football.

Our Buffalo Bills have to wait one more day to open their season, but we've talked about that game plenty, and we'll pick those discussions back up later on this evening and, obviously, tomorrow.  Much of today will be dedicated to the rest of the NFL action going on this weekend, as we feel certain that most of you would rather talk about those games - particularly the Dolphins game (at Atlanta) and the Jets game (at Houston).

After the jump, you'll find the picks for every Week 1 game (minus the already-completed Steelers/Titans game) from eight of the authors of Buffalo Rumblings.  This is a feature we'll run throughout the year in an effort to determine which of us is least stupid.  Feel free to add your thoughts on the picks, the games, and all of the action from NFL Week 1 in the comments section.

Yeah

Nice to see the ship is being sailed by at least a couple of Homers. I think the Bills will be better than most so-called-football-experts think, but it will take some time. Its not going to happen in NE, unfortunately. However, I have never been very good picking football games, so lets hope I am totally wrong. GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ive always thought we have a chance Kgun

and i really think we will steal one here. its the first game for a brand new defense and a QB who will be a bit rusty (although he is a future hall of famer). Im so amped. Im getting anxious now that kickoff is so close……

Yeah, I like Cincy to win that game too, but if somebody can pick Oakland, Tampa or Jacksonville, I’m surprised nobody picked Denver.

by kaisertown on Sep 13, 2009 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought about it but then the Brandon Marshall thing, their terrible defense, and Carson Palmer finally being healthy got my thinking otherwise.

Two words

Kyle Orton. When he’s the guy you’re counting on you’re pretty much doomed.

Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner

And Denver’s D could be the AFC’s worst….

Of couse, another two word phrase can come into play, too: dumb luck. The Broncos win on a freak play and only after the refs put 18 seconds back on the clock.

dang Leon Hall.....

Jonathan Stupar played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.

by poz on Sep 14, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Dang Roy Williams, I’d say. Hall knocked the ball away, but Roy Williams was too busy trying to decapitate Brandon Marshall. Hall tipped the ball, Williams took two steps and drilled Marshall while the ball floated by over his head. If Williams had been watching the ball there, that play probably doesn’t happen, IMO….

what’s washington lacking that makes them weaker the the giants?

There is a I in Bills!

I think it will be a close game. That is definitely one I’ll be tuning in for. Big Blue Wreckin Crew! That super bowl being in NY was still one of the greatest nights of my life. David Tyree, hellz ya.

At least being a secondary Giants fan gives me someone to root for in the postseason.

by thejimbo on Sep 13, 2009 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

This is one of those old-fashioned games that ends up 16-13, IMO….

by Kurupt on Sep 13, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s a close game, but NY is at home. They’ve got a better offensive line and a better pass rush. Haynesworth is a monster, but NY’s DL is still better. If the game were in Washington, I would pick the skins, but I’ll take the Giants with the hometown (or homemajorcity) advantage.

by kaisertown on Sep 13, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Redskins offense << Giants defense
Giants offense = Redskins defense

That’s my opinion, anyways.

The niners over the cards? I would have said the cards were a lock in that one. The niners desperately need a quarterback. Since the majority picked the niners, what are your thoughts? just curious.

As much as I hate em, I think the dolphins pick up a win this week.

Upset of the week (aside from the Bills of course…fingers crossed): Browns over Vikes

by thejimbo on Sep 13, 2009 1:48 AM EDT reply actions

No guts, no glory. :-) I think Singletary will have them ready to play. The Cardinals were only 9-7 last year in the regular season. It’s not like they are some elite team that wastes the competition week in and week out.

This is an awesome idea. I’ll hop in this week for kicks.

Miami – Surprised to see Eric is the only one who took them.
Baltimore
Carolina – Only K? I’ll take a great running team against a team with questionable LBs at home. Carolina’s weakness on D (the DTs) shouldn’t be as big of an issue with Westbrook and McCoy more of outside runners.
Cincy – poor Denver. I pity the city and laugh at McDaniels!
Minnesota
Houston
Indy
New Orleans
Dallas
Arizona – I get why SF is a nice sleeper pick, but 4 of you?
New York Giants – Corso style, closer than the experts think
Seattle
Green Bay
New England – Sorry guys
San Diego – Eric might not be crazy though

by kaisertown on Sep 13, 2009 2:06 AM EDT reply actions

Eric might not be crazy though

Don’t bet on that.

I wanted a few picks to be different then everyone else’s. I didn’t want to be just another Lemming lining up to leap off the cliff.

Why do you gotta use your words to hurt?!?!?! Like you said:

“It’s not a great week for picking underdogs though.”

I didn’t like the dogs at all this week, even with the spread. The only ones I really liked were Ten and SF.

Look at next weeks schedule. Guarantee the picks are much more spread out compared to this week. Tough week for suicide pool players – lots of people too smart for their own good will get the ole heave ho…

I know that Chargers finished strong last year, but they were still 8-8. I think the Raiders were better then most give them credit for last year, especially once Cable took over. It is my upset special.

The Chargers beat the Raiders 34-7 in December….I think that’s closer to how these two teams will play this year….With that said, the Raiders will probably pull off the stunner now…

I pick it too. Raiders are better than what people say they are. Also, SD is a notorious slow starter, and the Raiders have homefield advantage.

I am one of the two that picked the Bills. It’s unfair to say only two of us think the Bills “can” win. Everyone on this blog knows the Bills can win. They think the Pats will win. Past history and everything else makes that a pretty safe bet, by the way. You wouldn’t hear any of them complaining if they were wrong.
