Some things to take away from MNF
I know it feels like "new season, same story" right now. We have seen this before - impressive big game performance with big plays that make us look ready to take the next step but we ultimately fall just short by some horrific turn of events. Believe me, I've thought of all the negatives over and over again. I feel better this morning but that lump in my throat and twist in my gut are still there as a reminder of how bad last night felt. Let's also remember, division games are what keeps you in or out of the playoffs and we let the Pats get away with one when we caught them vulnerable. That stings and hurts our playoff chances even if it is week one. That all being said, I do think there were some signs that this year will not be like all the others. This team in many ways smashed the many common fan complaints about why we wouldn't be able to compete this year in the process of this heart breaking loss and if you distance yourself from that sinking feeling you have right now, you might be suprised what you find:
1.) Trent Edwards led our team the length of the football field for what we all thought was the game winning drive. He looked accurate and poised and displayed a knack for making the big plays. He seemed to grasp his offense well and commanded the team properly. The deeper we go into the season the better his timing and feel for his offensive lines capabilities will get, something which derailed us on that final drive for the game winning field goal.
2.) Aaron Schobel is back! With some fans foolishly calling for him to get cut, Aaron Schobel showed he was back from injury and ready to return to his old self. A great sack, a great interception, a great read on the screen, and a great touchdown were the highlights. Constant pressure and explosiveness were the story. Not only that, our entire defensive line was getting pressure and breaking through who the analysts say is one of the best offensive lines in the game - not just on passing downs but on crucial third and fourth and shorts. Nobody stops the Pats on fourth and an inch - we did. Kyle Williams and Marcus Stroud looked great and Maybin obviously needs work but is going to be a stud. Schobel is back.
3.) Our offensive line did not looked terrible, or even bad. That is huge. They had some great moments and some terrible ones, but they are the greenest o-line many of us will ever see this team have in our lives and they played hard and gave their all. Demetrius Bell made some key mistakes, those will go down. They need chemistry and thats what practice is for. This is a unit that will get better each week as they get more comfortable together. One thing they already do great? Screens, especially with Fred Jackson back there. Thats a testiment to the athleticism we have on the line. This unit will be great one day, and they will get closer to that day with each week.
4.) Our defense was simply outstanding. We held arguably the best offense in the league to 25 points but truly 19 if you take away the fumble and 13 points with minutes left in the game. Our defensive line was borderline dominating the Pats vaunted offensive line, Donte Whitner was flying around the field, Terrence McGee was playing great and Leodis made better tackles that last year he would have blown. Take heart that both of Tom Brady's final two touchdowns were targeted at Keith Ellison who was in for Poz. Brady could only make his "magic" happen when our defensive captain wasn't in his position. We look like a defense that can keep us in every single game and even win us a few - they almost did last night. They should have if not for the football gods distaste for our team.
5.) Fred Jackson is a beast. Enough said. An absolute beast.
6.) Terrell Owens didn't have a good game. He is going to be angry and he will want to prove that he is still a stud. TO will step up and play with a chip on his shoulder. In fact, our whole team will. They are angry, they should be angry. This better not deflate this team, it should infuriate them. They will crush the Bucs, this team looks good, they are good. They better use this to play mad. We lost to the Pats when we should have won in their stadium. We get them again in December on our field. We will crush them.
Bottom Line: Our team is good. Keep your heads up.

what did you think of the way maybin played in first reg season nfl game?
by jaybird3232 on Sep 15, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i loved his burst
and he was able to get pressure early on but I found that he was taken out of the game as it dragged on. The Pats figured him out on the line and began forcing him out wide and containing him. He was being pushed so far out wide he simply couldn’t get to Brady on time, a lot of which has to do with Brady’s quick release by targeting the center of the field without Poz in there. He will get better fast in my opinion and his athleticism is tantilizing but he needs to develop more moves and maybe a bit more strength. However thats something that all college players have to develop in transition to the NFL. There can be no mistakening it. Maybin looks like the best defensive end in the rookie class and he has made his presence felt in each game he has played. Im expecting big things, he will get better and better.

ya i agree he has to add an inside rush to his game but he looks like he needs to put on 15-20 lbs to be able to do that

they tried some stunts with him
but by the end of the game, he was visibly exhausted

was doubled frequently. quite a compliment for a skinny rookie.
a spin move would suit him well. very well.

Constant pressure and explosiveness were the story.
When? After the 1st quarter, we got little pressure on Brady. Schobel had a nice coverage sack after working through Light, but other than that, I don’t remember him getting much pressure at all. I don’t know if he’s back, because he was never a consistent pressure guy, but it’s nice to have an intelligent player that can make plays out there. We still need a much more consistent and better pass rush.
I was pleasantly surprised by the run blocking. They actually opened some holes, something they couldn’t come close to doing in the preseason. They obviously need to get much better, but that was something encouraging.

i disagree
i thought we got plenty of pressure throughout the game and yes Brady wasn’t getting touched at the end but thats because the Pats shifted to quick passing routes because we had totally taken away their deep ball. Thats mighty impressive against the Pats. They couldn’t throw deep because our coverage was excellent and our d-line was getting to Brady more often and faster than he ever expected they could. Their receivers are too talented not to gain yards, I’d rather give them those short passes then have them torch us deep.
Something I forgot to write about: Our coaching staff called a fantastic game. Well done all around.

Coaching
I thought the coaching was great as well, which is why I was surprised to see so many blaming the coaching for the collapse at the end. I think DJ summed it up perfectly, “these things happen”

i’ve watched that play two dozen times at least. not an ideal throw, and for a 6-5 guy to cover 10 yards that quick with 3 pats bearing down on him, and have the awareness to know where the pylon was – extremely encouraging.
i was pretty surprised by the number of snaps he got. we’ll find out if that was by design or by fine being inactive – but the coaching staff sure has to feel more comfortable increasing his role either way.
i’ll dare say that in 35 years of following the bills, i can’t think of another TE that could have made that play.

On the o-line
I thought AVP did a brilliant job playing to these guys’ strengths. They dominated up front and a lot of it had to do with the playcalling. He let the big dogs eat out there. Stretch running plays, screen passes and sweeps. These are the things these guys do the best. Yes, Fred Jackson is a beast, but he was a beast behind 5 other beasts for the most part last night. These linemen are athletic and downright nasty in space. Van Pelt did a great job letting these guys play to their strengths which helps build confidence and cohesiveness in this young group

so true!
will be interesting to hear ron’s take – but far more athletic, mobile and aggressive.
on one of jackson’s nice screens, levitre knocked one patsy on his butt, and was hustling downfield to find another.
levitre’s hand punch was highly regarded in combine reviews and he didn’t disappoint. on one play he was singled on willfork, got him moving sideways then hand punched him to the ground. sweet.

I also await Ron’s expert opinion of the line play…

F*** the pats
They should not have won this game but they only won because….well lets face it they found a hole in our defense…keith ellison. He got burned twice on the exact same route by the exact same player in the last 2 minutes. Lets pray that Poz can come back relatively soon and that this broken arm is not season ending again because he was flying around before he got hurt….and I’m pretty sure he would have done a better job of preventing Watson from schooling him…..however the coaching staff should have also recognized ellison was a liability and have some help over top. I know…i know its easier said then done when you have 5 guys on the field that will hurt you to defend but still.
Last night I was disgusted with McKelvin but after hearing he wasnt sure whether or not kneeling would get him a safety….i can understand the attempted return and trying to kill the 2 minute warning. He was not playing scared…he was playing to win which is what you need to do to beat this team….play with controlled smart aggression which is why they are so hard to beat everyone needs to be on the same page. I am excited to see them tear the Bucs apart next week, this should be a good season…….I hope.

No one was going to stop Watson’s 2nd TD. For every action you change, a different factor can become the new challenge. It’s a lot of “what if’s” we’re all going off of here. What if Kevin Faulk caught that pass? No one was stopping him all night.
I think it’s asking alot of ANY Bills LB to provide blanket coverage on Watson. I’d have like to see a DB lay a hit on him to knock the ball loose.

I don’t think it would have been a safety if McKelvin knelt down. He would need to be touched down first. He’d have knelt and the ref would have just stood there, I’d guess. Who knows though.

Kyle Williams
I was really impressed by Kyle Williams. He was beasting through the line a lot in the first half and in hot pursuit of a lot of runs/short passes to the outside.

Poz
The D looked weak without Poz. I was unbelievably impressed with the D until the Poz and then the Kelsay injury. The D won’t be the same until Poz gets healthy.
I would have a lot more optimism if that injury didn’t happen.
I seriously hope Mitchell moves to the middle and Harris gets the starts (by the way Harris ran like a beast when he picked up McKelvin’s first fumble).

Kelsay
Looked like the Kelsay that earned him that extension a couple years ago. When he has a counterpart on the other side, he is a great pass-rusher. He’s just not a #1 guy, never will be. He looked great last night. Hopefully he’s ok to go this weekend.
I also like the idea of Mitchell moving inside in the absence of Poz, but who knows what will happen. I am betting a lot of nickel will be played

DeMeco Ryans is playing for the Bills.

Pretty unlikely. With the uncapped year looming, he’ll likely be a RFA, and I don’t see how he wouldn’t get the highest tender.
So easy Marshawn Lynch can do it.

But I agree, I would love to see Ryans in Bills uniform.

I know. He’s the most likely “big name” guy they’d have a shot at. Ryans is really unhappy with Houston, I guess. There’s that guy on Oakland who’s a speedster.

Thomas Howard? Kirk Morrison? Both are FA’s after the season, but with an uncapped year, neither will likely be available outside of restricted free agency. Morrison is in his 5th year, Howard his 4th….

Fred Jackson vs Marshawn Lynch?
I take Fred Jackson, based on his performance last night, especially since the Bills were getting space underneath and then dumping it off to Jackson, who I think is the better receiver. Anyways, it should get interesting when Marshawn gets back.

I’m going to abstain from any Lynch/Jackson talk for now. I don’t want to stir the pot, but I have definite feelings on the matter.

Nice post poz, but not sure about this one
TO will step up and play with a chip on his shoulder.
Should he have been doing that already? Fans need to get used to the fact T.O. giveth and T.O. taketh away. He has been dropping easy balls at critical times since his career started. Then, he will turn around and do something fantastic. The bigger concern is if the Bills keep losing, will T.O. be happy getting thrown to 3-5 times a game, or will he blow up?
Poor ball security leads to very painful outcomes
