Freddy Jackson is another SMART football player, and for my money, Marshawn Lynch may become the change-of-pace back when he returns, because I can't see benching Jackson if he continues to play at a high level. He has a feel for the passing game Lynch doesn't have, and right now, is a better fit for the no huddle offense.

Wanted to post this because of Kilgore’s last comment, about Jackson being a better fit for the no-huddle than Lynch. I think that has some merit. Discuss.

Yes he is.....end of discussion???????

He is a better receiver and more elusive in the open field. Lynch is a more powerful, punishing back, but lack speed. Jackson’s skill set is a better fit, IMO.

Should we all raise the red flags touting “we were told Lynch was a dynamic dual threat out of the backfield!” ??

I love me some Jackson, but I keep reminding myself it’s 1 game into 2009.

More elusive in the open field? Jackson didn’t make one defender miss last night. He had some good blocking from the line and then just ran full speed ahead to try to get extra yards after first contact. He performed admirably and got us tons of yards, but he was nowhere close to elusive. His running style was “powerful” and “punishing.”

“Elusive” is exactly how to describe Lynch’s running style. Look at the Cleveland game last year, where he created yards from dump off plays by eluding defenders. Look at the Lynch’s long runs (@NYJ, SF, CLE, @MIA, OAK) where he made multiple defenders miss while still moving the ball forward.

Weve played one game using the no huddle, and Lynch didnt even play, so by what comparison are you using to determine Jackson is a better fit?? And if you say the preseason, thats just dumb, cause our offense as a hole looked horrible all through the preseason. Dont get me wrong, I love having Jackson, but until we actually see the no huddle being ran with Lynch in the backfield I dont see how anyone can say Jackson is the better fit.

Revelation?

Hardly. I’ve been of this opinion, stated here more than once, that Jackson may prove to be our starter after the first 3 weeks of the season.

And I’ve been roundly blasted for this position. I stand by it.

but I think we are in a GREAT position with both of these guys on the roster.

I kind of agree with him. Lynch is a helluva RB, but I tend to think Jackson is better in this role.

Jackson is a better receiver, better blitz pick up and just seems like a better fit for this scheme. With more screens in the O, he’s definitely a better fit for that.

Marshawn is better for a power run offense, but he does have the skills to be very effective in the same way Jackson was last night. He is a good receiver himself, and decent in blitz pick up. He has better speed, IMO, and has more of a chance to make a huge play.

Both have the ability to play well in this offense, and both should play. I don’t think we’ll see the 80/20 or 70/30 we saw last year, but a 50/50 split is hardly out of the question. Jackson deserves the touches and has proven more than capable. I absolutely love him on screen passes. AVP better have made that a staple for his offense. I have confidence he’ll get the first down EVERY time he catches it.

better blitz pick up

That is a key for Jackson. Lynch has dropped the ball quite a bit in that department.

Is everyone else as stoked as I am to see some second-level blocking and the first two successful screen passes thrown by the Bills in about 10 years?

But Lynch has also really improved in that area too....

Yes, I think it will be worth a try with Lynch in there, he does have a certain “element” to him that Jackson simply does not bring to the table. Either way, it’s a good situation to be in, and I think when Lynch comes back he’ll be motivated like we’ve never seen before.

by syrbillsfan on Sep 15, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think this point bears watching — will Lynch continue to be troubled? Will Jackson continue to play well? It’s not heretical to think that Jackson could be the starter before too long, huddle or no-huddle. But I think there’s a lot that has to happen for that to be reality. Something to keep an eye on, but not something to get vocal about.

by Dyl on Sep 15, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hold on

Lynch brings a whole different dynamic to the offense. I think it is a bit extreme to say Jackson is better at the no-huddle. Jackson is probably better in the 2 minute offense but the no-huddle is not the 2 minute offense. I like Jackson as much as anyone else but Lynch caught 40 passes last year and wears down the defense through his physical running style.

“Two Back Set”

Come on Gents, you guys have been waiting for Buffalo to find a way to get them on the field at once. I thought for sure Kurupt would have picked up on this.

We ran 2 back sets with them last year

We saw it in the preseason

I think it’s already in the playbook

Why me?!?!

2 backs

is very needed. Having Lynch AND Jackson, would allow the team to keep 6-7 in for protection, and always have Evans, T.O. a TE and one RB in a pattern. I think it’s the way to go. I hope we see a lot of it.

How bout Roscoe last night! That guy just never appears in any meaningful way!

Wow, 50/50 with some 2-back sets is perfect. I’m hopeful to see how AVP utilises this 1-2 punch (or, more appropriately, the 2-headed monster).

Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?

by thefourwinds on Sep 15, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Last year, you would have seen it in the first 3 games. It was effective. Then it was sprinkled in on ~ 5 plays the rest of the season.

The pre-season…you saw Fred and Marshawn at Trents shoulders in the preseason? Once, twice. Turk didn’t like the formation.

Why you? You’re Captain Critical. With that, also comes the keen ability to recoginze something that works and have a fairly good insite into what types of plays they should be using. Poz, and Marv also pick up on that regularly, but you where the only one that posted so far.

by Buffalo Mo on Sep 15, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, guess I'm missing your point.....

Yeah, I want to see what they can do together in the backfield in this offense, but it’s not like they haven’t lined up there together before.

Freddie runs North-South

and hits the holes. Marshawn is more powerful but tends to go East -West too many times.

Freddie may not be as flamboyant but he gets the job done more often.

I agree

I’ve been saying for a while that because of that fact, it actually benefitted the bills not to have lynch against the pats since freddy’s style is more affective. They both have their days and their strengths, much like Thurman and Davis in the 90’s

I have always liked Freddy as a RB – not to say the Bills don’t need Lynch. But I think Freddy really fits the role in the no huddle.
I do agree about Lynch becoming the change of pace back now. Mostly because he came in heavier to this season and who knows maybe that was something the Bills wanted to emphasize for short yardage and goal line situations?
All I know is having Freddy and Lynch in the back is just dangerous, you can easily play fake it to Lynch and dump it to Freddy and let him take it to the house!

freddy is way better!!!

he has always been a better back!! hitting to wholes, catching passes!! while marshawn top toes around and just hit people. i like the quick jackson over marshawn anyday and i haver thought this for a year! now on monday night he gets his chance in front of everybody and shows he is better.

by InTRENTweTRUST on Sep 15, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You can’t write off Marshawn. If anything, he and Jackson could go about 60/40 on the carries and be one of the most explosive tandems in the AFC, if not the entire league.

If Lynch gets the holes that Jackson ran through last night, he’d be just as devastating.

by billsct11 on Sep 15, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Freddie is a better fit. They actually fit both, but in different ways.

We just experienced how Fred works for the No-Huddle, does well in screens and catching.

But Beast Mode is far more tiring for the opposing D. He is just so hard to bring down.

It might certainly be the best idea to wear out the D with Marshawn in the first half or the first three quaters. And after that, we should make the D chasing Freddie out of the numerous Flats and Screens etc.

This would be brutal for the D, it works vice versa or at the same time.

But I’m sure that the coaching staff already realized that, they get paid too ;)

Lynch shows outstanding effort every time he touches the ball. Jackson shows outstanding effort on every play. I’d go with Marshawn up the middle, Jackson everywhere else.

We can’t be so obvious and telegraph our playcalls. Plus, I like the idea of Lynch hammering down field on sweeps, screen passes, and a screen here and there.

by jj24 on Sep 15, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really have to see Marshawn in action with the all the new elements on offense before I start saying how much each guy should play. We haven’t seen Lynch with a confident Trent, new offensive line, or Van Pelt’s playcalling. I know Jackson has better hands but Lynch could really do some damage in our improved offense, too.

It’s a really tough call, right now, but a good position to be in. We are very lucky to have both guys. For right now, I’ll say keeping both guys fresh while maintaing that they have a good feel for the game is the most important thing. Also, it’s easier said than done. I think back to Dallas a few years ago when they had Marion Barber as their “closer” and think we should use Lynch like that. Again, it’s just great to have both these guys on our team when they’re(he’s :) not suspended.

Lets rewind to the Monday night game last year

Do you remember the screen pass lynch took the distance and broke 11 tackles?? Lynch is a beast and they are both good backs. No “one” back should be featured more. They are both solid players who can play and I am happy we have them both. They should split it up 50/50 and relieve eachother when one is more tired than the other.

This is yet another entry in the long string of dumb ideas (fire Jauron, bench Edwards, make hair-brained trades, etc.) coming out of Bills fans and the Buffalo media for the last month.

Fred Jackson is a great back, but Marshawn Lynch is one of the BEST IN THE LEAGUE. Marshawn has great power but is also very elusive. Go watch the highlights from last season. On the long runs, Marshawn made would make at least 2 or 3 defenders miss. Fred doesn’t do that, he just runs down hill to get as many yards as he can until he is tackled, hoping to possibly push the pile with a couple defenders on his back. Together Jackson and Lynch are an excellent 1-2 punch, but Marshawn is definitely locked in as feature back.

I can’t stand the scramble to blame and complain about the Bills coaching and personnel. Everyone was complaining about Edwards, the line, and the Schonert decision/AVP, before any of them had a chance to perform in regular season action. Now that those decisions all panned out, everyone wants to hop on Lynch (who still hasn’t played a snap), Jauron (whose judgment on Edwards, the line, and AVP was vindicated last night), McKelvin (who showed some questionable judgment, but is still a league best talent), and Ellison (who played excellently in run defense, and well in covering Welker, one of the best slot receivers in the league). The Bills lost a tough game last night, but played admirably. Get over it and move on, we have another game soon, which we’ll most likely win. Our team has shown itself to be competent, and should compete well this season. Stop reaching for stuff to complain about, it’s petty and petulant, and does nothing to dispel the stereotype that Bills fans are some of the worst complainers in the league. (Also, ever wonder if the people who have dedicated themselves to the football as a profession might know more about or have better judgment on the sport than you?)

As an avid Bills fan, I like to closely follow the team for in depth coverage, interviews, and analysis. However, all the negativity from the Bills-centric media outlets (WGR, Jerry Sullivan, post-game call-in shows, parts of this site, and some of the ESPN stuff) is a major turnoff. What good is rooting for the team if you only want to complain about them? You’re not a fan, you’re just a pessimist with too much time on your hands.

by crp2103 on Sep 15, 2009 6:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, I would say that Jackson frequently breaks tackles and makes defenders miss (he didn’t need to last night), but there’s no reason to think the Bills should trade Lynch.

Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?

by thefourwinds on Sep 15, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Go watch Jackson’s highlights from last night or last season. He is not an elusive back, and this skill is not part of his game, at all.

He is a down hill runner with almost no lateral movement. That’s fine, as he’s still an exceptional back, but Lynch has all that down hill power as well as excellent lateral movement. Lynch is an unquestionably better back (though that doesn’t mean anything negative about Jackson).

by crp2103 on Sep 15, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All I’m pointing out is that if you look at Jackson last year, especially on his receptions either out of the backfield or when split wide, he almost ALWAYS made the first defender miss, and then dragged other defenders with him while gaining extra yardage. Look at the Jacksonville game. I think he had an almost identical play against the Raiders. Heck look at his TD run against the Rams.

I am not at all saying Jackson should be the feature back. Just that Jackson definitely can make men miss and break tackles.

Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?

by thefourwinds on Sep 15, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So Fred Jackson averaged 4.4 yards per carry last year (a quarter of a yard more than Lynch) because the OL opened up huge holes for him? He obviously makes some players miss or he wouldn’t have had the 11th highest yards per carry of the 49 RBs who had more than 100 carries last year.

I’ve complimented Jackson before for being the most impressive mediocre looking talent I’ve ever watched play football. He’s not strong or fast, but he has great body control and that is how he eludes tacklers. He doesn’t look impressive, but his stats don’t lie. He’s a natural reciever too.

by kaisertown on Sep 15, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What do you consider elusive?

Jackson has the knack to make the first defender miss. He’s done in numerous times. Him and Lynch are magicians at making guys miss in the backfield or right at the LOS just to make something out of nothing. Just because Jackson is juking left and right to make guys miss doesn’t mean he isn’t elusive. He’s a very slippery back. Very rarely does he get brought down by the first defender or by just one defender.

Couldn't read everyone's BUT

Let me just say…Lynch will flourish in this offense, and will be deadly with the screen, and even more so with the misdirection calls. With both playing, defenses will be straight maddened by their fresh legs bursting at them from every angle.
And how about with both of them on the field at the same time? Forget about it….I love this team right now…some problems, sure, but we know alot more about the positives than we thought we would have the pleasure to

Jauron’s nuts must have dropped this year….Go Bills!

I don’t think Kilgore is 100% on this. Lynch and Jackson will both fit well into this and will be better because they are both available.
