Bills jump to early lead, hold off Bucs
The important part is the Buffalo Bills opened their home season with a win. The call from fans and critics was for the Bills' offense to go deep, and Trent Edwards answered the call with two long touchdown passes to Lee Evans and Terrell Owens. Two big interception returns by the defense, including a 76-yard touchdown return by Donte Whitner, helped the Bills overcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Buffalo. Four Rian Lindell field goals provided the rest of the scoring in a 33-20 Bills win. The Bills' record now stands at 1-1.
Unfortunately, the Bills dealt with injuries to TE Shawn Nelson (shoulder), CB/KR Leodis McKelvin (ankle), OT Brad Butler (knee), and TE Derek Schouman (knee). We'll have to see the extent of their injuries but Schouman was carted off the field in the second half.
Expect a recap from Brian tonight or tomorrow, but for now here is your postgame thread. Feel free to discuss all things good, bad, and otherwise.

This team needs to learn how to put games away. We should have never let the Bucs back into it like we did.

They did put it away.....
Offense scored 13 points to close it out.

Yes. Thank you. The defense needs to tighten up late, but the offense was borderline excellent in the fourth.

And they took what was given to us… I am sick of hearing we need to go down field. Yes, you do to a certain degreee, to open stuff up, but keep duming it to your TEs if that is working.
This was a needed win. Let’s just hope that McKelvin is available for next week. Not that I think Corner did a poor job, on the contrary I have been singing his praises for a while now… We are just going to need every CB we can find!

You guys might actually want to read an entire statement before responding.
You call the end of the 1st half (fumble and an effortless TB score) and the absolutely lifeless looking 3rd quarter putting a game away?? Seriously?!

My bad. I thought it was 14 points, not 13. The last one they were trying to run clock as much as anything.

Yeah, but my point is still that the really good teams in the league punch those in and don’t keep teams in the game. We had drives stall in the 4th at the 10 and 3 yard lines. And then there’s wherever the Jackson fumble was.
by Posluszny Pollocks on Sep 20, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions
The Jackson fumble was unfortunate but the Bills should have kept it on the ground at all costs on their last trip to the red zone, TD or not. It got inside the two minutes warning and made it a two TD game.

AND...................my point was......
the offense moved the ball and didnt go three and out and gave the defense a chance to rest while putting points between them and the bucs.
Cant ask for too much more than that.
Sure they had a chance to blow it……….but they didnt. Thats a start.
Why so serious?

How often do teams really dominate from beginning to end? The Bills were about to put the game away until Jackson’s screwy fumble and the big return by Piscatelli. Sure, they had a couple poor series to start the 3rd quarter, but then they score a couple times and were up 30-14 at one point. How much easier are the Bills supposed to make it look?
I, for one, am not disagreeing with you. It would have been nice to see them lock it up much sooner after jumping out 17-0 the way they did. I just took issue with your “team” statement, because the offense put up 13 points in the final quarter. They put the game away. That Jackson fumble was ugly, but that’ll happen – Kyle Williams mentioned post-game that they need to be more resilient in those situations, and he’s absolutely right.

Here’s my beef with us not finishing. We had a team down 20-7 and absolutely on its heels with us in the Red Zone. What did we do? Fumbled (on a phantom strip) and let the Bucs score a TD on its first play. Going from possibly 23-7 or 27-7 to 20-14 is letting a team back in it. Then in the third quarter we got the ball and looked absolutely FLAT. No spark, no life. The no-huddle seemed to slow down to a crawl without any pace or hurry.
Then we finally drove the ball, and got a FG. That’s not finishing off a team either. The TO score helped, but then promptly let them march down the field and score. That puts them right back in it.
Good teams don’t let somebody stick around for a quarter and a half before finally taking care of business.
by Posluszny Pollocks on Sep 20, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Like I said – I’m not disagreeing. But 13 fourth-quarter points still more than got the job done, particularly considering the fact that we won by 13.
One thing you should note is that AVP made a great adjustment in that third quarter after the slow start. They went an entire drive playing empty set, lining up five players at receiver. That drive ultimately ended on an INT after the ball got away from Edwards, but it gave them rhythm and calmed Trent down. They were absolutely fine offensively after that.

thats what everyone said about the Pats game. I said it then and I’ll say it now. Our team is good. We are talented. We can play with anyone in the league.
We got your back Leodis!
After watching how the Pats lost to the Jets
Maybe the Pats aren’t as good as everybody is making them to be.
We were praising about the Bills last year when we won against JAX, Seahawks, and Rams, but were they really that good last year?
I’m just saying that if we want to evaluate how well the Bills are doing compared to our opponents, then we should have a good yard stick of our opponents first. And most of the time, the yard stick from last season is not indicative of this season.
Bills fan half way around the world
that was a tough game for the jets too

how about ellison – another ten tackles today! whew.
i thought the defense played particularly well during this game. did leftwich get a lot of big throws? yes. did the bills get awesome pressure throughout the game on him? yes. did the corners and LBs make plays? yes. they got turnovers, they forced leftwich to throw it when he didn’t want to, etc.
offense was pretty stagnant during the end of the first half into the middle of the third quarter, but i thought they had some really nice plays. i hope butler isn’t hurt too bad.

We’ve all discussed trading Parrish… Gotta show him off if we expect to get much for him…
Roscoe did save a touchdown. It was nice to see Trent running him down on that play as well.

Yeah
but following a fumble that Roscoe was partially responsible for also… And yes, I know, he didn’t drop the ball, Jackson did, when hit by the guy Parrish should have blocked….
As for Trent… I was totally surprised he could run that fast!!! Good hustle by a QB!! Also loved the hit he put on the DB on one of his runs…
Saying Parrish was even involved in the fumble is a bit of a stretch. It’s not like Jackson was going to walk into the end zone untouched and the the tackler didn’t get within a few feet of the ball. It would be one thing if the guy Roscoe was supposed to block shot in clean and put a big hit on Jackson and a helmet on the ball or something like that. Did the hit even cause the fumble?
It looked more like Freddie didn’t hold the ball tight enough and it came loose when he got tossed around.

Loved the win, managed to catch a chunk of the game, but no internet connection where I was
The MAJOR concern for me is the sheer number of injuries and the possibly BAD ones to Butler and Schouman. All the others look like they should come back this week for it. But we need all hands available next week against the Saints, this is gonna be a tough game to recover from to get ready for the next.
Glad we got the win, but we should have sealed this win with the 1st bomb to TO if he hadn’t dropped it.
As my mother once said, common sense isn't as common as it should be, I'm looking at you Fewell, common sense says to play UP on the line against the slant.
Do we know yet the extent of any injuries?

A lot of good stuff happened today, and we have a lot to work on. But a win is a win. Just like last week a loss was a loss.
Next week will be tough, but then we have two very “winable” games with the Dolphins and Browns… I would be very happy with 3-2 over the first 5 games.
Let’s just hope the injuries to McKelvin and Nelson are not serious. I have no dilusions that Butler and Schouman are going to be ok. Both were carted to the locker room. Before someone says, but Butler just limped off. Check the Bills website, after getting to the sidelines, they carted him from that point.

0-4 Redzone Offense
My biggest concern heading into next weeks match-up against the Ain’ts. We played great today, besides a turnover that could have proved to be costly. I’m proud of the way that they rebounded and moved the ball in the second half though.
24 or 33 points will not be enough to beat the Drew Brees lead Ain’ts.
i think 33 might be.
but i think we’ll get more than that. They’ve given up 24.5 per game to the lions and the mcnabb-less eagles. i also think our d is better than either of those. i think we can win that game. not saying we will, but its possible.
Jonathan Stupar won the Heisman…while playing in the NFL!
I think we can win with our playmaking defense. 2 TDs in 2 weeks.
Our offense needs to finish for us to win though.
I’ll probably spend some time on the Ain’ts site tonight or tomorrow to get a better feel for their team as a whole. I really, “REALLY” hope that their site is run by some folks that have a better grasp on football and better writing skills than the Buc’em guys did this week.

I was impressed by the "D"
I loved the fact we didn’t go to the prevent defense and kept the pressure coming. It was nice seeing Donte come up big as well. “O” looked good, but we have to protect the ball, could have turned the game around big time. Thank you TO for not dropping the second one.
Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!
Thankfully, T.O. finally caught a pass!
Our D is very concerining. That’s a pretty bad offense we faced, and the still were able to move the ball. I’m still hoping we see a pass rush sometime this year.
I just got back from McFadden’s in NYC, totally awesome!

have to disagree
2 sacks, and i saw leftwhich throw alot of passes away when he was under pressure. (i saw him do it when not under pressure too, which was odd) but overall, it was alot of blitzing up the middle, that worked especially in the second half. leftwhich was getting up off the ground multiple times. we also held tampa to 100 fewer yards than did dallas. 300 yards through the air twice is the most concerning. but i think the lead made tampa abandon the run earlish and pass alot more. i cant believe their game plan was to have byron throw 50 times…..

We blitzed a lot without much success. If you were satisfied with our pass rush, then you must have low expectations for it. Leftwich had all day for much fo the game.
Holding them to 100 fewer yards that Dallas did isn’t exactly an accomplishment….
Our run D was excellent, the pass D was very mediocre..

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
I’m with silverstreak. Leftwich was 26 of 50, got sacked twice and had a rush for no gain. He averaged under 6 yards per pass attempt. Looking at TB’s drives in the context of the game, I thought the defense played well. They forced a 3 and out, TB had a pretty good drive, but Buffalo shut it down with the Whitner INT. The Scott INT came on a 3rd and 10 that was barely inside Buffalo territory and then they gave up the TD. It wasn’t the best start, but it was a decent one that was made into a good one by putting a TD up themselves.
Then the Bills gave up 23 yards, forced a punt and then forced a 3 and out and then the TD after the Jackson fumble before halftime. They held Tampa to 14 first half points, 7 of which can’t really be put on the defense, scored a TD and gave the Bills two starting drives outside of their own forty.
Up 6 to start the 2nd half and with the offense struggling, Tampa had three drives, which only gained 27 yards. That included the 4th down stop. Buffalo kicks a FG on the next drive, the D forces a 3 and out and TO gets his TD. Buffalo’s up 30-14 when they go into a bit of a prevent type D and give up the long drive. That drive did take four minutes off the clock and Buffalo stopped the two point conversion though. It could have been worse. The game was pretty much over the next time they saw the field.
Post game press conferences are up on the Bills website (Jauron and Edwards).

In the passing and running game, Fred Jackson is our best weapon. Hes carrying tacklers, making big plays for Trent through the air and is moving the chains. He has been simply stunning.
Things are going to get really interesting when Marshawn is back. How do you justify taking the ball out of the hands of the guy who has been your best player this season? And how do you justify not putting the ball in the hands of Lynch, who has been a one thousand yard rusher every year and is so young? Freddie is our offense.
We got your back Leodis!
I agree… If Jackson earns the start, he should get it! Period. I think Lynch has dug his own grave and should play second fiddle considering the way Jackson has played… If Lynch comes back and plays better than Jackson so be it, reverse it then.

You’re right, poz, Freddy has been a total stud.
Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?

What a wonderful problem to have
Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

That my friend
is a “problem” every team in the league would love to have, but only a couple do… 2 backs, both capable of tearing it up…
No problem at all for we Bills fans!!!
since we dont use a fullback
and since both are tremendous receivers i think AVP should be planning formations with both of them in, teams will panic!
We got your back Leodis!
Agree he has been a stud
We need both of them if we are going to make a run at this. I do not think one rb can handle the full load for an entire season. I tthink we can find carries for both. I do think that no matter what you have to make sure Jackson is a much better 3rd down back.

I can see both of them in the backfield
Talk about scary.
Let’s not loose sight of the fantastic job the O-Line is doing opening up holes, I really think our new center is a big reason for the great running and let’s also keep in mind that teams are protecting against the deep plays with TO & Lee

Well there is no way he can keep up this pace IMO. Therfore, splitting carries between the two and getting Jackson the ball in the passing game will be imperative.

exactly
And Marshawn will just make him even better. A fresher Jackson is very dangerous!

how long can we keep both?

Freddy just got extended and Marshawn is here for a while as well ??

Yeah, we can keep both for at least a couple more years. There aren’t many guys in the league who demand 300 carries, so I doubt that Lynch or Jackson will have a problem with a 50/50 playing time split. A guy like Lynch who isn’t that big, but has a physical running style is better off getting 10-15 touches a game and extending his career anyways.
Jackson is under contract through 2012 and Lynch is still on the books through the 2011 season.
Another player who has been sensational is Kyle Williams. Both pick 6s for the Bills’ D have resulted from pressure by Kyle Williams.
Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?
great call on Kyle
he seems to get better each and every single year. I love it!
We got your back Leodis!
Great Game, especially on defense
Kyle Williams had a tremendous game, his motor never stops!
Mitchel must have read some of the posts on BR last week because he came out and really played with a lot of aggression.
Fewel called a great game, I’m sure Byron is going to be very sore in the morning.
Really funny how Trent under threw Lee the whole game, except to the errant throw 8feet over his head. Love the fact that they got TO a TD, that will ensure his happiness for another week…
AVP did a great job adjusting and going to the empty backfield. I am really starting to like this guy.
Let’s hope for a speedy recovery from Nelson & Butler.

Only saw highlights, but if I had a lot of game balls to give out, I’d give one to Whitner for his pick 6 and his solid stuff on 4th down.
Speaking of Whitner, when I saw the highlight of him returning the INT, I thought, “I’ve never seen him run. If couldn’t see his number, I’d have no clue who that was.” Did anyone else feel that way?
Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?
Same here
I only saw the highlights as well.
Whitner deserved the game ball on D.
We never got a chance to see him do a pick 6 before, so it’s indeed a strange sight. He got talked down a lot for his previous performance. We should give him credit for this game.
Bills fan half way around the world
haven’t even seen highlights yet, how did the O-Line do? How was Bell this week, and did who on the d-line was getting pressure?
Thanks guys
The Eternal Pessimist...
I'm sure Brian,
Ron, et all will have their usual excellent breakdown tomorrow… IMHO, Bell and the OL had a great game. And for some reason beyond my understanding, the D scrapped the prevent, and went balls to the wall, after them late in the game…
Great Game
IMHO, if not for Freddy’s weird fumble…… this game is an absolute blowout. These injuries worry me but it was also good to see guys like Corner, Buggs & Scott come in and play admirably. They’re gonna have to tighten up a bit more defensively with Brees & his crew rollin in next week…… those guy look super dangerous
It rubs the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again
They are super dangerous, trying to keep up with Brees is not going to be a easy thing if it can be done at all, but hey thats next Sunday might as well enjoy this win while we still can. =)

It seemed to me that
it wasn’t until Schouman went down that Trent started going to Josh Reed and Owens. It’s almost like they need to take away that security blanket.

The deep balls opened up the soft underbelly of the defense. That’s where Schouman came in and then Reed took his spot there.

Oh right, I understand that. I think Edwards is sometimes prone to tunnel vision and yesterday saw it manifested in Schouman’s team-leading 6 receptions. But yes, you take what’s open.

TO's over and under for drops
At the start of the season, my over under on TO dropped passes was 11 for the year. He’s on a pace for 16, so he’s gotta look those in better. How can a dude that talented always be right up there leading the league in drops? Great game but real concerned about losing Butler for the year.
