Stat Pack Thru 2 Games
Some interesting statistics through the 1st two games of the season:
Keith Ellison is 2nd in the league in tackles with an impressive 27 total, 1 behind the leader
Trent Edwards is the 5th rated passer in the league with a 104 passer rating
Fred Jackson is 5th in the league in rushing at 220 yards,
Buffalo is giving up a solid 65 ypg rushing, but a ridiculous 332 ypg through the air.
Welllll, the sample size is obviously too small for any extrapolation...
After watching Keith Ellison, he's playing well, but he's still Keith Ellison. I thought Nic Harris looked good when he was in. And Perry, stop blitzing Ellison, because he sucks at it.
Trent has started the season well again, will he finish this time? I think so, he's a smart guy and the more control over the offense he has, the better. And a BIG BIG BIG up to AVP, proving that being an offensive coordinator is not rocket science. Unpredictable, balanced, execution, excellent. And is it safe to say that TE has the fastest release in the NFL? I think Tono Romo may be his closest competition.
The Bills give up a ton of passing yards because they still play too much zone. They have 4 corners and 3 safeties that can cover their asses off, there's no need to let the offense know where you are at all times... on the flip side I was pleased with the blitzes, although the Bucs did a good job of picking them up.
Finally, what impact will Marshawn Lynch have on the offense when comes back? Could he possibly have a negative impact? Not likely. He's gonna be fresh, he's gonna be hungry. I just hope the Bills have learned that they need play both backs equally. If they split time, 50/50, it's like having either one of them at 100% for the whole game.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Are you saying that AVP isn’t the smartest guy in the world?
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.

What?
No, it more-so implies that the OC’s before him weren’t the brightest crayons in the box. Buffalo’s always had enough talent offensively to succeed, but past coordinators tried to impose their style onto the players instead of molding the offense around the players’ strengths. It’s not rocket science.

I was being sarcastic, but you have to admit that if you were AVP and you read that you might get a little offended.

Haha
Then imagine what Turk Schonert would think if he read it ;)

I would like to see 2 back sets with lynch and Jackson
both can go out wide and both can punish going north

That
has the potential create some serious mismatches if they motion either one of them to the slot or even out wide (think Faulk/Rams).

I'd expect more Wildcat
or whatever the Bills call it. We ran it with moderate success last year, and I’m sure it’ll return when Lynch does.

ME TOO!
I would like to see some I and split-I with Freddy at tailback and Marshawn at fullback.

the passing numbers against
is inflated because in both games the Bills opponent was behind and trying to catch up. the bucs were down 17-0 after 1 quarter.
the bills run defense is impressive as well leading teams to shy away from the run and throw the ball more often.

Good point...
but it’s an argument that kind of cuts its own legs off. Because if teams are behind and throwing the ball more, and the Bills KNOW they’re throwing the ball, it should be much easier to stop them. Just sayin’

you would think so
but they play a prevent type defense which encourages shorter passes and eats up yardage.

Lynch will get plenty of touches, especially if Freddy keeps fumbling the ball. He didn’t lose the fumble against NE, but yesterday’s could have been a disaster.
The pass defense has been putrid even if we’ve faced more passing because we’ve gotten up. No pass rush and large cushions usually results in completions. Drew Brees is going to have a field day against this defense next week if they don’t make any adjustments. He might anyways…

what the difference was this week as compared to last week was stopping the Bucs on third down. the defense didn’t do a good job last week and this week they were excellent.
the pass rush has been hit or miss. they got to Leftwich a number of times but in many of those cases it was the result of the coverage. we need maybin to be ahead of the learning curve and schobel to continue to knock some of that rust off and get after the QB.

Schobel was pretty non-existent rushing Leftwich yesterday, as I’m sure he’ll be many times this year. Maybin just needs to improve, and improve a lot, really quickly. We need him to be a threat. The pass rush continues to underwhelm. They’ll get the occasional pressure, with a blitzer squeezing through or coverage allowing a rusher enough time to finally beat his man, but we need so much more than that.
3rd downs were definitely much better yesterday, thankfully.

Your
obsession with the pass rush has brought on expectations of delusion. The pass rush is hit or miss for every team throughout the course of a game. Sometimes the blitz gets there, sometimes it doesn’t. The Bills hit Leftwich A LOT yesterday, especially late in the game. We could have Bruce Smith lined up at all 4 positions and you would still call the pass rush underwhelming.

I agree
we did hit Leftwich quite a bit. I think Fewell needs to be creative in getting guys free to the qb.

Haha
so it has.
Maybe it’s more the lack of pressure from the DE’s that skews my opinion a bit more than it should regarding the entire pass rush. There’s no doubt our DE’s have done very little after a good start in New England.
We need to be pressuring Brees Sunday, that’s for sure….

I actually mostly agree with K on the pass rush. I’ve defended the pass defense as a whole a few times because I thought they were very good. I also thought the blitzing was pretty effective. I was hoping the Bills would blitz multiple guys with more regularity and they did. One thing people assume is that blitzing leads to sacks, but it isn’t necessarily true. I thought the blitzing did a good job of forcing Leftwich to get rid of the football before he wanted to and Mitchell got a handful of big shots on him too.
The problem was that the front four didn’t get much pressure. Blitzing is supposed to help them more than it does. I agree with K that Schobel looked very ordinary, Maybin shows flashes of elite talent, but is struggling, the DTs aren’t pass rushers and the DEs still aren’t anywhere near good enough. They’re definitely headed in the right direction, but the pass rush still has a long way to go.

See my point below. I think the rush is improving, but the press coverage is not happening – and there really isn’t a good reason for it.

In Peter King’s MMQB column, he quoted D. Revis on how he stopped Moss – essentially saying he just kept roughing him up at the LOS. Why the heck can’t Fewell ever do that with the CBs the Bills have?

When Lynch comes back
Has the team tried using Omon at FB in any capacity? I think if he can handle some plays at FB, we can jettison McIntyre and still be ok with our RB depth.
by Zorak84 on Sep 21, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
We don't use the FB though
Has McIntyre even seen one play on offense yet?
I think they’d stick with the FB they have and cut Omon, and put him back on the PS before considering Omon at FB….

I don’t recall seeing McIntyre. Maybe they’ve used him in short yardage? Ron probably knows?

Our pass rush would excell
If we blitzed Mitchell every blooming play. Make him like a Farrior, (steelers), But someone please piss him off. Start slamming some people Mitch! Just saying.
