Bills 3-0 versus Gregg Williams defenses since 2000!
Yes, we lost the "Homerun Throwback" game in playoffs after 1999 season (why couldn't Kevin Dyson drop lateral like Youboty?), but we beat them 16-13 to open the 2000 season.
In 2007, a late Trent Edwards to Josh Reed hookup gave us a last minute FG - btw thanks Joe Gibbs for calling successive time outs.
And last year the Bills went down to Jacksonville where the Trent Edwards to James Hardy TD was the difference.
So if Joe Pendry, Steve Fairchild and Turk Schonert could figure out Gregg Williams schemes, I am sure AVP can as well! It would seem the real test will be Perry Fewell's D versus the Sean Payton designed offense of the Saints.

And in those games we scored 16, 17, and 20 points. THat’s not exactly going to get it done against the Saints.

MRW, oh ye of little faith
Matthew Stafford and Kevin Kolb were making their 1st NFL starts and – surprise – threw 6 picks. The Lions and Eagles are struggling as a result.
Saints are living the charmed life ala Bills last year with some cupcake games early.
This game will be closer than anyone expects.

Yes
but that still doesn’t negate the fact that NO is averaging 45+ ppg. Stopping their offense will be an extremely difficult challenge, and that’s an understatement.

I know – it’s just ridiculous. I can see Brees throwing 50+ this year

I don’t disagree with you that the game will be, hopefully by far, the Saints’ biggest test yet. But this is a team that the Bills simply do not match up well with, particularly when they have the ball. We’re going to have to have a great, nearly flawless day to win – or they’ll need to be equally un-sharp. The latter isn’t likely to happen with Brees at the helm.

Start praying
For high winds and rain.
That Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell don’t heal up.
That Shockey gets ejected.

I disagree
We match up with them well, If Leodis and Drayton are a go and Perry Fewell has the guts to use the dime and even coverages using 7 or 8 defensive backs in certain situations..
Let’s make the saints beat us with the run, their backfield is banged up, Mike Bell, if he plays, I will be surprised.
Pierre Thomas is coming off the same injury that has limited him for 4 weeks.will he be a shell of last season?
This is the time to think outside the box.
In the Dime I like Florence and Youboty playing the slots with Youboty matched up with Shockey in coverage.
This is a winnable game if we don’t use the 4-3 as a base defense.

The Saints' running game isn't crippled yet
Bell should be ready; Pierre Thomas should be ready as well. And if either of them can’t play, there’s Lynell Hamilton, who looked very solid in preseason…except for a problem with fumbles. If he plays, go for strips.

If we drop 7-8 in coverage, Reggie Bush will eat us alive catching passes…

ME???? Little faith?
I said 20 points won’t get it done. Brees usually throws three TDs in a game. That means we will have to score more than 20.

I am optimistic the Bills can score more than 20. In fact they have in each game this year. But the thesis of the post was we have won against Gregg Williams defenses and my point was that Williams has done a good job against the Bills (admittedly terrible offenses).

Let me run this by you
…just to get some local corroboration (or not).
I posted this earlier on the Saints blog: there’s rain in the forecast for next Sunday. Saints fans have bitter memories of playing the Bucs late last year in steady rain: 44 net rushing yards and three interceptions later, they’d lost 23-20.
Our offense may be ridiculous…but we still haven’t seen it tested by bad field conditions. And I don’t know anything about the state of the field at Ralph Wilson stadium: is it grass? artificial? in good condition? What’s it like when it’s wet?

lol – I just posted in your article.
it’s fieldturf – so good condition.
When it’s wet it’s like all the other fieldturf stadiums really, a touch slippery – but your going to have that regardless.

You asked about our weaknesses
…and since this is a thread about Gregg Williams’ defense, I’ll tell you something that is disturbing me so far.
When Williams was hired, we all celebrated: finally, we would have the sort of attacking defense we used to have in the glory days of the “Dome Patrol” (Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, et al). What we heard was that he was intrigued by finally having the chance to serve as DC on a team with a top offense; that way, he could really pull out the stops, knowing that the offense could make up for any critical mistakes if something went wrong. We thought, oh boy: they’re going to blitzing like crazy.
But so far, his play calling has been pretty vanilla…or our guys just haven’t been able to execute. Darren Sharper has been a beast…but that’s just Darren Sharper. Our defensive line still can’t get good pressure, and blitzing hasn’t produced many sacks. Meanwhile, we’re still giving up tons of yardage to the pass.
You guys know Gregg Williams better than us: what gives? Does he always start off the season slow?

Greg Williams is a person that loves the blitz, but has lousy timing on it.

Game comes down to can the Buffalo front four get any pressure on Brees bc if we blitz and miss its gonna be 6.
by LIBi on Sep 21, 2009 10:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think it comes down to the pressure off our front four, I think it comes down to if we can can confuse Brees with our coverage like droping 6 into a zone with one or two DBs playing man to man coverage and 3 or 4 lineman rushing. We have never shown something like that before. That’s our best chance to beat the saints.

Correction
It should have said this
I don’t think it comes down to the pressure off our front four, I think it comes down to if we can can confuse Brees with our coverage like droping 6 into a zone with one or two MORE DBs playing man to man coverage and 3 or 4 lineman rushing. We have never shown something like that before. That’s our best chance to beat the saints.

You may be right
Brees is one of the coolest customers you’ll ever see. He doesn’t get rattled by pressure…he can go through four reads faster than most quarterbacks can go through two. The key is disguising your coverage. Unless you expect the pressure to actually get to him consistently and produce a half-dozen sacks per half, your best bet is to make him see something that’s not really there. Think James Harrison picking off Kurt Warner.

Ya – that’s a big ole negative. Well unless we blitz like the Jets did in NE

If that is the case
Then Bills will have to win 54-51, going against Drew Brees and the weapons that he has in Colston, Meacham, Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, Jeremy Shockey, Reggie Bush, etc. – Pick your poison………Bills will have better chance of winning if it rains, snows, or Drew Brees goes drinking with Jim Kelly the night before and throws 4 picks.
by BuffaloWhiner on Sep 22, 2009 10:15 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
maybe it's just me
but I think the way to beat Drew Brees is to do the same thing teams try to do to Peyton Manning…… keep the guy off the damn field. It’s not as if our no-huddle is a “hurry up” offense anyways……. use the no-huddle if you will but keep putting the ball in Freddy’s hands and use shorter routes/screens to chip away the clock. Take few shots down field when they load the box but use that option sparingly.

So Peyton Manning wasn’t on the field for 15 minutes and won. Does that mean we have to hold the ball for 50 minutes??? :-)
