Sullivan: Jauron's decision took life out of Bills : Jerry Sullivan : The Buffalo News
So what does Jauron do? He puts his defense back on the field. Instead of making the reasonable, courageous gamble that might win the game, he decided it was more important to keep it close.

Bills prepare Byrd for solo flight : Buffalo Bills : The Buffalo News
The Buffalo Bills selected Jairus Byrd in the second round of April's draft with the intention of him eventually becoming a starter at safety. Ready or not, eventually is likely to come Sunday in Miami.

T.O. wallowing in his own martyrdom - AFC East - ESPN
Three weeks ago, I defended Owens' sense of humor when he jokingly told New England Patriots reporters on a conference call that he didn’t like Buffalo's no-huddle offense. Some outlets turned his off-handed comment into headlines that declared Owens hated the no-huddle. On Sunday, I asked Owens questions at a news conference minutes after his streak of 185 games with at least one reception was snapped in a 27-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Now Owens is acting like a victim, and this time I don't feel one bit moved.

Analysis of the Teams with Losing Records - John P. Lopez - SI.com
There is still hope in Buffalo. But when you step back and look at just how well the Bills have played in spurts, the soft upcoming schedule and the likelihood of key missing elements returning big, I'd bet on the Bills making a run before their division rival Dolphins, or even the 2-1 but struggling Patriots.

T.O. blames the media for his passive-aggressive routine | ProFootballTalk.com
By not answering questions about the passing game following the loss Sunday, Owens is up to his old tricks but in a passive-aggressive way.

Bills notebook: Lynch back in 'Beast Mode' : Sports : The Buffalo News
"Now Marshawn's back and we'll take some of that load off [Fred] and evenly distribute it because both those guys are good. It'll make us a better team."

Bills’ Whitner wants probation in Cleveland case | democratandchronicle.com | Democrat and Chronicle
Buffalo Bills defensive back Donte Whitner wants his disorderly conduct case in Cleveland dismissed through a probation program for first-time offenders. Whitner’s attorney asked Municipal Court Judge Angela Stokes on Tuesday to approve his participation in the program that would clear his record when he finishes probation. Court spokesman Ed Ferenc says Stokes scheduled an Oct. 27 hearing.

Niagara Gazette - BILLS: Moorman shows off skill set
Drew Brees was probably the first quarterback taken in your fantasy draft. Brian Moorman surely went undrafted. Yet this past Sunday, the Bills punter produced more points than the Saints star.

Dolphins vs Bills: Three Key Matchups - The Phinsider
On Sunday, the Dolphins host the Bills as they search for their first win of 2009. And these three matchups will be critical.

Why Owens not giving the media much – Inside The Bills
It’s obvious the last thing Owens wants to be is a catalyst for problems in Buffalo’s locker room, knowing what the prevailing opinion is among fans about Owens as a teammate. So in his case saying less helps him and his teammates more.

Week 4 power rankings: AFC East - AFC East - ESPN
Bills moved past the Dolphins by staying at the same spot, No. 21.

How I See It: AFC East Stock Watch - AFC East - ESPN
Stock Falling: Terrell Owens. Through three games, Owens ranks fifth on the team with five receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown. Running back Fred Jackson has three times as many catches. Tight end Derek Schouman didn't play Sunday and is out for the season, but he has almost double Owens' total.

Ryan still flying in approval ratings - AFC East - ESPN
Buffalo Bills coach Dick Jauron is clawing to stay in the double digits.

NFL Fan Rankings
So the experts have us ahead of Tennessee at 19, the fans have us at 17 ahead of the Cardinals and Steelers. Knee jerk much?

POLLOCK: Random thoughts on Bills’ defeat | Olean Times Herals
Thoughts hit on Gregg Williams, the fake field goal, Pierre Thomas, the 1:1 ratio of defensive/ST touchdowns to offensive touchdowns, and the pedestrian special teams effort through three games.

Arizona Cardinals' and Pittsburgh Steelers' struggles have nothing to do with schedules - Tuesday Morning Quarterback

  • Stats of the Week No. 5: Buffalo has failed to score an offensive touchdown in four of its last five home games.
  • Stats of the Week No. 6: The Bills have more touchdowns from their defensive ends (2) than from Terrell Owens (1).
  • As for New Orleans, Buffalo showed the Saints' offense is not unstoppable, holding the visitors to 10 points through the first three quarters. If the Bills had anything even slightly better than a Pop Warner offense with ultra-timid coaching, they might have prevailed.

Sully's article says it all...

I’m not a big fan of Jerry Sullivan but I appreciate this article dedicated to one completely boneheaded call. To me the Bills fate was sealed was when Jauron opted to punt, down by 10 with 7+ minutes to play. You just knew that the Saints were going to score after that. Typical Jauron move. Even his own players protested, including Owens. I was especially hoping Mt. Terrell would erupt. While the play on the field can be put behind them, decisions like this are not so easy. This will linger a few games, or until the head coach makes up for it with a more manly call.

I wrote an article about it, too. It did not cost them the game but was rather the last nail in the coffin.

I just read your article and agree 100%. I also appreciate the chart you posted.

As you stated, going for it would have given them at least a sliver of hope—but it means much more than that. No one can predict for sure what would have happened, but assuming that they make the 4th down it is unlikely that they would have scored (a TD at least). However, they would have eaten some time off the clock and given their defense a much needed rest (hopefully 4-5 plays worth). Perhaps the Saints would have only scored once. Regardless of the outcome, the real benefit would be to the fragile psyche of the offense. At least let them go down swinging. Isn’t that what we all want of our QB? Punting in that situation is a real demotivator to players and fans alike.

Owens claimed we’re trying to goad him into throwing teammates under the bus.

Not nearly.

YES. YOU. ARE. You even did it in your title.

So now it's passive aggression

because Owens is trying not to rock the boat. What a joke. I think everybody knows how he really feels. He’s PISSED. So let it go already.

Owens was being passive-aggressive. I hate doing it but I agree with Florio on that one thing. By not saying “no” and instead giving his “I just go with the plays that are called” he is inactively criticizing the playcalls.

So should he actively criticize the playcall? I just don’t see what he can say or do where he isn’t going to get nailed. Like I say, it’s obvious he’s mad and he doesn’t like the playcalls. He’s just saying he isn’t going to talk about it. All in all I think that’s the best he can do (which means I disagree with the ESPN analysis).

He should say “no” if he doesn’t want to be taken the wrong way instead of “I just run the plays that are called.” If he had said that nobody – Sullivan, Graham, Sal, could have taken it out of context. Maybe they could have called him a liar but that’s about it.

he is inactively criticizing the playcalls.

I can live with that. Especially when he is right.

No doubt he is right but as a voice box for the team he should say “no” instead of repeating a silly line if he doesn’t want it taken that way.

TO is getting his point across without blowing up or blatantly throwing teammates or coaches under the bus

I would guess that similar comments are made all the time in other locker rooms. The only reason this makes news is because it is TO and the media loves to hate him. Which, by the way, could be exactly what TO and his publicist hope to accomplish out of this whole TO in Buffalo experiment.

Lee Evans said a lot worse of the offense. You’re right it’s getting amplified because it’s T.O.

Owens:

I think it’s funny to see how the local media is reacting to TO’s post game presser on Sunday. I mean we all knew what the Bills signed up for when they brought him in. I remember when they signed him and the folks on WGR, Jerry Sullivan especially, where hoping he would blow up and throw Jauron and the offense under the bus to shake things up. Now he sort of does (if you read b/t the lines of what he said) and everyone is appalled. The Buffalo media makes me laugh.

would be wise to shut it. Last I knew, the Dolphins nearly took a game from Indy. News Flash: Buffalo isn’t very good right now either.

If media drama mongers, and now sadly Tim Graham,

…claim if T.O. said any of the same things, in the same words, that the other Bills he mentioned, that they would treat the comments the same on not construe and report them as selfish, team-hating, whiney QB bashing tyrades, they’re kidding themselves and insulting the intelligence of the reading public (who are also utlimatelypaying reporter’s salaries). It’s honestly pitiful what ESPN has turned the sports media in to. You cannot lambast a guy when he gives negative opinions about his team, and then lambast him when he recognizes that and choses not fuel the flames by doing it again. If they spent their time reporting on the actual sport, they wouldn’t put themselves into these situations where they get all hot and bothered when an athlete basically calls them out for their double standards and the fact that they are little more than a tabloid these days.

and they can use the excuse that this is all driven by the fans thirst for this stuff, but does that still doesn’t make their sports coverage good. Pretty obvious how I feel about ESPN. It just feels like everything they do is an insult to intelligent fans. I wish they would merge with E!, and they can cover who say what about who where behind who’s back all they want, and an outlet interested in covering the actual athletic competition takes their place. If only SB Nation could broadcast live games in HD…
