Bills deal FS Simpson to Detroit for pick
ESPN.com's Adam Schefter is reporting via Twitter that the Buffalo Bills have traded backup free safety Ko Simpson to the Detroit Lions. The Bills will receive an undisclosed draft pick in return; Schefter notes that the pick will likely be a late-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
I'm floored. Not that Simpson was traded, mind you; I'm floored that the Bills could get something in return. It was pretty clear that Simpson, a fourth-year player out of South Carolina, was not going to make this team after the second-round selection of S Jairus Byrd this past April. Swinging a deal for anything for Simpson is a win - even if only a minor one - for this organization.
Buffalo's active roster now stands at 73 players. With two (RB Marshawn Lynch and WR James Hardy) likely to be pre-season roster exemptions, the Bills will need to cut 18 players by 4:00 PM ET tomorrow evening to reach the NFL's league-mandated 53-man roster limit.

I'll speak for the Lions on this one.
I’m a Lions fan and our secondary is a mess right now. Injuries and poor performances have left us very vulnerable back there. You may not think much of him, but I would not be surprised if he walks into a starting spot.
Earlier this preseason we traded a back up/former starter Safety to Jacksonville because [I think] they thought they had a lot of depth back there. I think they would like to have that one back.

I don’t know how we got a trade for him – maybe theres a clause that DJ still has to be coach next year for the Bills to actually get the pick…

Only way Detroit get Simpson is by trading for him.
Ko sent packing… the fact that we got something in return for him is interesting. I think Detroit probably figured if he hit the open market, They wouldn’t have a chance at Ko since he you know is “worth millions” and Detroit probably only wants to pay him “Thousands”. This way Detroit doesn’t have to get in a bidding war with another team and figure he is better than most anything they have on their roster. Good for Buffalo for making some good news on a chaotic day.

If anyone think Bill’s front office is the worst, just take a look at Lions’. Giving up any draft pick for a million dollar Simpson is just insane. Great deal for Bills.

I actually like the Mayhew/Schwartz combination out there. They’re absolutely starved for talent. It’s going to be a long re-building process for them.

I expect them to pick up a lot of guys off the waiver wire. They have no depth.

I only think, why not wait guy get cut. I know they are horrible, and have absolutely no depth, for me the best way for them was pick some waiver guys, like MRW said. And a long re-building are better with a lot of draft picks.

So would I be correct in saying that the Lions were worried that another team would trade for Simpson? Because wouldn’t they be able to claim him on waivers first since they had the worst record last year?
I can’t imagine it’s not a 7th rounder. Which should be an early 7th rounder.
by Pistol on Sep 4, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed on it having to be a 7th. The only way it isn’t a 7th is if it’s conditional based on playing time and that Simpson somehow finds the field often. Even then, I doubt it could go higher than a 6th.

Yup…. He has less than 4 years experience. He would have to go through waivers.

Good for OBD
This certainly helps erase the taste of the Dock debacle. What does this do for the CB position in terms of Youboty being retained or traded?

Anybody watch the Detroit game or watching the replay? That Youboty tackle on the kick return to open the 2nd half was phenominal. One of the best single person efforts on kick coverage I have ever seen. I really hope he makes the team. If only he could stay healthy, he could be a starter in this league.

He was Buffalo’s best tackler when he was on the field last year. I remember time after time that he locked onto a guy and put him down right there, unlike the rest of the back 7.

Youboty has always been a quality ST player but nobody ever talks about him. If it came down to trading Youboty and keeping say, Wendling, or keeping Youboty, its Youboty hands down for me.

It depends on the return for Youboty
He should be able to land us a better option than Keith Ellison by himself. Depth in the secondary is good enough that I think we can move him if the value is right.

You think so?
An injury-prone, nickel CB is worth more than a starting LB?

Is Ellison really a starting caliber linebacker?
Youboty has the talent to be a starter if he stays healthy, and good corners are much harder to find than capable linebackers. He should be able to net an aging but still decent linebacker.

Then why do we have so many CBs and so little depth at LB?

Have you looked at the way we draft?
Even the linebackers we draft are converted DB’s.

Youboty has the talent to be a starter if he stays healthy,
If the coaching staff can’t trust he will be there when the crap hits the fan, he has no talent. It doesn’t matter how he is “when healthy” if the staff thinks he is injured too much. You make no plays from the bench.
Ellison has played very well this preseason. He may not start on most teams but on this team in this system he is a two down LB and does a good job at that.

Not as bad as you think
Kyle Williams- solid starter
Whitner- solid starter
Butler- solid starter
Ellison- marginal starter, solid swing OLB
Youboty- could have been a solid NB, but broke all the time
McCargo- Is this the year he finally breaks out?
Simpson- solid back-up FS
I’d say that’s not bad at all. You can’t draft an All-Pro every pick. Just getting a contributor every pick is great work.
If you’re looking for bad Bills’ drafts, go check out 2005 or 2000. 2006 was good.

I wasn't sure why they traded...
So why make the Ko Simpson trade? Well, there was no guarantee Simpson was going to get waived, and it’s possible the Lions were concerned the Bills might deal him to another team. So rather than risk missing out on a chance to pick up a guy who’ll eventually start opposite Louis Delmas, they gave up a late-round draft pick.
