Bills begin cuts by releasing Dominic Rhodes
The Buffalo Bills have begun the process of trimming their roster to 53 men by releasing RB Dominic Rhodes. The report comes courtesy of Alex Marvez at FoxSports.com.
Rhodes, the former Colt, was signed in March as veteran insurance after RB Marshawn Lynch received a three-game suspension for detrimental conduct. Rhodes gets his walking papers even though the Bills' depth behind Lynch's fill-in, Fred Jackson, is highly inexperienced. It should also be noted that Jackson is currently dealing with a wrist injury.

I sure didn’t. I was wondering whether or not or he would find any touches once Marshawn came back, but I didn’t think there was any chance that Buffalo would go into the season one injury away from Xavier Omon getting all the carries.

Yeah, there was a little piling on there, but it just seemed that for a guy making the money he was (compared to the alternatives), he wasn’t giving anything special. Also, I said I would say “I told you so” so I felt compelled to remind the “haters” (isn’t that what the kids are saying these days….I heard someone say that once). Now to see if Florence gets cut….Graham is saying that his sources say it is an intense day at OBD and to expect further suprises.

I guess not beng able to pick up blitzers is a liablity Jauron is unwilling to accept. Does this mean that Omon is on the roster for the year and that McIntryre will be on the roster until Lynch comes back from suspension?

If it is an indication that Freddy’s injury is not as bad as once thought, then I don’t mind losing Rhodes, but im not sold on Omon. As someone else had stated, adding J. Lewis for some power running (why would you need that with the beast on your team) wouldn’t be a bad idea, gives the team another option at the goal line.

If they are going with Omon and McIntyre, I will be ticked. Rhodes is a proven player, while those other two pretty much stink. Plus, Omon is hurt…
With Jackson hurt, this doesn’t make any sense. If we have to hand the ball to Omon at all in the first 3 games, I will be extremely unhappy.

I am not sure what his contract read, but I am sure it was close to 2.5 or 3. This makes zero sense to me. He did not look great, but he did not look bad either. He was a nice reliable back. This actually pi-ses me off. Whats the point?
My guess is that they are not going to bring anyone in. They must trust Omon. Any back you bring in at this point wont be able to get too involved in the first 3 games with just a few days to prepare.

I really think this was a move designed to help Edwards and the O-line
Rhodes had two whiffs on blitz pickups in the span of three plays in the preseason. Given that he didn’t wham any blitzers to cancel that lack of effort out, the coaches probably freaked. This highlights like never before that Edwards staying upright is key to our success this year.

I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
by Ghetts on Sep 5, 2009 12:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nope. Their big cut last year was Will James. The other “name” cuts last year were Dwayne Wright, Jon Spragan, Blake Costanzo, Jason Jefferson, Corey Mace, Patrick Estes, Christian Gaddis, Nevin McCaskill, Courtney Anderson, Tim Massequoi.
They did have a couple of surprises in 2007 cutting Craig Nall, Terrance Pennington and Mike Schneck. They kept an injured Josh Scobey and 5 RBs too.
by kaisertown on Sep 5, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And when I put up my “surprise cuts” post, people actually thought there wouldn’t be any. Oh well, that’s the nature of trying to predict the future.
Wouldn't it be ironic if this team imploded and it had nothing to do with TO?

Alright, so to analyze the entire position now. Fred Jackson = lock. Xavier Omon = now locked in. This leaves Corey McIntyre and Bruce Hall. Given McIntyre’s token contribution with the special teams unit, he may be locked in as the 3rd back/short yardage/goal line back. Bruce Hall looks likely to still be cut/make the PS.
So what happens to McIntyre when Lynch returns?

This is Omon’s second straight year of making the team by default. He was in a battle for a roster spot last year when Dwayne Wright literally fumbled his way off the team in preseason.

Omon has a decent Resume
Comes from a small college, but has stats second to not many. Needs to get used to the speed and punishment of the NFL. He has shown some improvement, but still miles away. Especially with our young offensive line and his role in pass protection.

I wonder whose idea it was to put Walker at LT. Was that HC, OC, OL coach? I know that I wouldn’t want Walker to be outright cut but Buffalo is in kind of a strange place with the offensive line—more quality guys than openings, though not necessarily in the optimum spots.

Kugler probably had some part in the decision making process. He might have been against it though. There’s no way to tell how that decision was made. I’m sure they went into the draft with the idea that Walker could move to LT, so there must have been a lot of thought behind it.

Cutting Walker makes absolutely no sense. It’s like cutting the punter because he’s not a good place kicker.
Walker was an above average to good RT: if you watch the highlights from last year, most of the long runs came on the right side behind him and Butler. Further, I don’t think Butler has shown himself to be better than Walker at RT. If the Bills make changes at LT (not saying I’m opposed) they should just swap Walker back to RT.

If they dump Walker he’ll be signed by another team faster than Dockery resigned with the Skins. I don’t know of a single person that thought Walker should have been a LT, his value is at RT. I think
thas has more to do with Rhodes accepting his role, and working 100%, knowing he was 3rd string. I don’t think that ever sat that well with him. Running Backs are a dime a dozen, and OBD clearly felt the need for depth at other areas was more important than keeping Rhodes. And he sucked in pass protection in pre-season, which was supposed to be his MO. I just don’t think he ever was “all in” on his Buffalo experiment

Seriously, this is almost turning hilarious. I mean, you just never know what this freaking front office comes up with (giving a monster contract to a mediocre guard, drafting a 1C safety in top ten, signing T.O., giving Kelsay a big extension, sacking the OC ten days before the season opener etc.), and I have a very hard time determining whether that is positive or negative. How in God’s fearing name can this coaching staff decide that one of the only proven veterans on this roster, who has ‘been there and done that’ and who still can produce, should be cut, when it’s extremely critical that they have a proven, venerable guy behind Fred (especially when our starter is suspended for the first three games of the season; a season where it’s of vast importance to everybody that we make the playoffs)??? It’s startling to say the least, but again this is the type of bold move that we Bills-fans have grown to expect from our coaching staff/front office.
I certainly hope that they go out and sign a guy to backup Freddie, because Xavier Omon has shown nothing to make him a trusty backup RB.

No foolin. Just saying that the reason he didn’t come back is because he left to get an opportunity to start and couldn’t swallow his pride to come back.

Green-Ellis got 3 TDs in the Pat’s final preseason game, there’s no way they cut him. I love the way the kid runs. It’ll probably be Morris, but what about Taylor?

They could definitely cut him… The Giants cut Tyree and he was the hero in the Super Bowl. it’s not what have you done but what you can do. I expect Morris to be the odd man out.

A few disclaimers:
The Pats might only keep two QBs on their roster. Plus they currently don’t have a FB listed on their roster either. Given all the injuries that they went through at the RB position last year and the fact that with only 2 QBs and no FBs they have the extra roster space, they may keep all three.

It’s gotta be Green-Ellis, IMO. The first two are safe. You’d think Maroney would be safe simply because he is so talented and apparently healthy right now. Morris ran really well last year and is a good ST player….

Just a gut feeling off of what Jauron said yesterday
I think they are going to try to find a smaller more elusive back with speed like a loen washington. Obviously not someone as proven, but I think Jauron feels that Jackson and Lynch can be that short yardage back to grind out the yards. I bet they look for a change of pace, good recieving, skat back type with speed. We haven’t had a player like that in a lon time. Just a hunch.

They had the draft, and after the draft in UDFA for that…I doubt we’re finding one of those on the waiver wire now….
Rhodes was a kind of change of pace back, with good receiving skills and decent speed….

i agree but
he is also a proven vet who probably had a problem with being the third option. When he was in Indy and Oak he was known as a little bit of an attirude priblem. Plus didn’t Jackson get his new contract after Rhodes signed? I do not know if any of these things had some thing to do with it but possibly.

If that was the case, why did he sign here then? He knew he was the 3rd option coming in….

Not meaning to completely change the subject, but did you watch any of the Steelers preseason games? They just cut their rookie running back Isaac Redmon. I watched that kid a ton in preseason and loved the way he played. I would love to see him here.

He would be a nice all around project that could contibute on special teams right away. Word out of Pittsburgh is they are hoping to sneak him on to the practice squad.

Brian can we put up a thread for cut day updates from around the league?
The giants just cut safety Sha’reff Rashad, undrafted rookie (i believe) who has looked really good in preseason and the Chiefs have put safety heavy hitter Bernard Pollard on the trade block. There could be a lot of good discussion with all the action going on.

plus the fact he has looked better than Fitz at times, I doubt OBD is looking for a QB :-(

I agree and was right there with you when it came to drafting a QB in April, but Brohm was a 2nd round pick last year. For the Packers to have given up on him is pretty telling about where he is right now as a QB.

I remember that and you could be right, but maybe they are playing the numbers game
and trying to sneak him through waivers. If they lose him….no big deal. Rodgers is young enough and seems durable enough that they might just go with 2 QBs.
