Oppressive Buffalo Media. Why?
I am not the eternal optimist, and I don't subscribe to doom and gloom. I am a fan. I root for my team. Why is it that our local media is so jaded? Listening to Jerry Sullivan on GR with Schoppe and Bulldog yesterday I wanted to scream. That group with the microphone does not represent any fan base I know. Participating in and reading Buffalo Rumblings over the past few months tells me I'm not alone. Intelligent, level-headed fans exist and they are not pissed off beyond hope. The local media can't understand how the Bills sell out games. Dillusional and naive Bills fans are called for supporting their team so diligently. Is anyone else tired of the arrogance in the local media markets speaking for us? Having a microphone, soap box, simply speaking louder or more articulately doesn't make you more intelligent about the game and it's fans. And it certainly doesn't make you more right in your opinion.
The season is about to begin, it seems the media wants to get across that it's already over.
I emailed Sullivan just to gauge the reality and sincerity of his regurgitation from the other day. Here is the text and his response:
Sully-
I have to admit you were on a roll the other day. Even Schoppe, the eternal pessimist, said he felt down and discouraged. Even I felt, well, sullied. You are obviously passionate about your job and the sports teams here in WNY, as am I, but you've got to relax. The Bills feel like they are better off without Turk and Langston. I don't see how losing those two dooms the season. What if by some miracle the Bills show up Monday Night, make a game of it or even steal the game? For crying out loud that haven't played a game yet.
I enjoy your opinions, Sully, they are intelligent, well thought-out and articulate. But I think you need to challenge yourself and try to find a positive angle so that you don't completely slip to dark side. You know, like the chick who talks about death at a party. Lighten up. It's football season. Big screen TVs. Sunday ticket. Beer. Nachos. Leave the drama upstairs on the little TV for our wives to watch.
Luv ya,
Scotty
Sullivan's response:
OK, but your team is a dysfunctional mess and a national joke. =======
Maybe I'm way off and more of you agree with the media. But I just have to know how alone I am.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I usually like Sully, but coupled with him Dicesare on Wednesdays BUffalo News article, they just seem to say the team is bad no matter what because that has better odds of making them right.
The WGR guys to me just don’t count. They only like hockey and are the worst radio guys I have ever heard
Jauron’s nuts must have dropped this year….Go Bills!
I voted yes (but it's not as cut and dry as yes and no...for me)
Not afraid to say so and i’ll probably get lambasted here for it.
I thought Sullivan was pretty spot-on the other day. He sounded to me like a fan, not an observer. He let it get the best of him, and it (to me) was okay at the time.
I think this organization is giving fans the impression that they’re lost. It may not be the case, but it doesn’t look too far from the truth. Paying good money for average talent; keeping guys around because they’re too big a hit to release otherwise (speculating here); drafting for need, not for talent (though, that seems to be changing).
I think for writers, it’s getting difficult to publish the same things – to ask the same questions every day, each week. The irony in all of it is that it’s harder to write when there’s nothing wrong and they’re doing well.
Sullivan addressed his perceived cantankerousness. He’s not blind. I think he wants change and no more smoke and mirrors.
The only team I can truly compare the Bills to are the Houston Texans – just giving glimpses of hope to reel you in season after season. Then just showcasing how much they have to learn to “get it right.” The Texans are an expansion team. The Bills are original members of the AFL.
I like Bulldog (he’s a bit like Chris Farley as a Bills fan), Schope is just someone earning a paycheck.

All teams have failed draft choices, free agents and coaches. These guys think it’s only Buffalo? There’s just no accountability. They have the mic and no responsibility. Brad Riter is much more palatable on WECK. He at least seems to enjoy his job.
Schope “earning” a paycheck? He’d be an overpaid intern.

I’m in Rochester, so all I get is their show. It’s either them or Bob Matthews, who likes to fight with his callers.

I didn't answer
because I don’t listen to the media very often. why? because they just talk about what keeps peoples attention and not necessarily what’s important. I’ve always just formed my own opinions.
really though – who gives a sh** what other people think? they have no idea how the Bills are going to do and neither do we. wait and see people….wait and see

The problem is that the local media represent WNY nationally. Look at any national sports web site and you are referred back to an Allen Wilson article or Sully or DeCesare. They are representing our community and I am not on board with that. Don’t care what other think? Are you really from Buffalo??? lol

what bugs me about Schopp and Sully is the condescending attitude they have with callers. Mind you some callers deserve that type of response but people call in with logical points/arguments and they shoot the caller down like he has no clue. let the team play a few games before we form an opinion on where this team stands.
local media represent WNY nationally
lol – who cares? who gives a rats ass about the national media? haven’t you noticed that they pretty much cater to the NE’s and Dallas’ of the world? I guess the more exposure the possiblity to sell more merchandise – but i’m guessing if we won the SB that we’d be out of the national spotlight a lot quicker than teams like those would be. that’s just how it is. i guess i just don’t give a crap about that stuff because it’s football and not anything really important.
I would also consider this site to be local media. in the end though we’re talking about people that almost assuredly don’t follow the Bills as much as half the people on this site. sure they have access to interviews and media-esque things – but do they live and die bills like most of us do? doubtful – they are just talking about something that keeps peoples attention because that’s their job. whether people like to admit it or not – they like to hear people bitch and will tune in to hear it – that’s all it is

Here's something from the local media as well ;-)
A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Erie County courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible..
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Buffalo Bills, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Great fanpost. And great email to Sullivan.
To me, it does seem like a lot of the local media is jaded. This is a mediocre team and organization. But a national laughing stock? I’ve said this before, but I’ll throw it out there again. The Raiders have averaged 4 wins per season over the last 5 or 6 years. That’s literal, add up their wins and divide by the number of seasons and you get exactly 4 wins per year. They are a joke. Detroit didn’t win a game last year. 0-16. That is a laughingstock. How often do you see the national media taking shots at Juaron? Making fun of Ralph Wilson? Saying the Bills might end up with the top pick? The answer is rarely, if ever. The jokes we get are about snow, beer and chicken wings which happen to be three things I’m pretty proud about.
Guys like Jerry Sullivan (who I typically enjoy reading) are the only people turning this team into a national joke. Mediocre year after mediocre year have led me to think this team might be due for some major changes, but let’s be real, we aren’t the Raiders.
You are dead on, Kais
Here is the text of my response to Sully’s jab. I don’t think he will respond to this one:
Sully-
Happy to have a team. Apparently every other team in the league has success with every coach, free agent and draft choice. Trust me, if things go bad and the team lives up to your claims, I’ll be on board and bash it. Historically, the Cards are a more dysfunctional joke and they made it to the Superbowl (with a horrible O-line btw…see, Gandy, M.).
The fans don’t see it your way right now. Maybe we are all dillusional and full of false hope. I, for one, hope you are humbled come Tuesday morn.
Btw- I’ve lived in 3 major sports markets and by comparison Buffalo’s sports media is a dysfunctional mess and a joke. I am more embarrassed by the jaded local media than by my struggling teams. Other than Tim Graham, I don’t see much Bills bashing nationally.

Look at the source
let’s be honest, Don Henley’s song Dirty Laundry sums it up best….“it’s interesting when people die….. give us dirty laundry”.
I have been an ardent Bill backer all my life, my Dad had season tickets at the Rockpile, moved to section J1 at Rich and upgraded to section 135 when they redid the seating, I’ve been going to games since my very early teens (until I moved to Jacksonville for personal and mostly economic reasons), my family has had close ties with folks within the organization for years (not quite as informative as Geronimo’s contacts but ties non the less) and one thing has been constant and shall remain constant….. the Buffalo Media talk to hear themselves talk…….
Sullivan, DiCesare (with whom I have had a personal relationship for over 20 years), Schopp and the rest of the clowns fancy themselves big time media types and feel an incessant need to accentuate the negative because it’s what sells papers and allows them to have validation of a lackluster life in small market journalism.
Honestly, without the Bills and Sabres to constantly bash, these guys would reduced to calling out the underachieving linbacker play in the Frontier Central v. Gowanda JV game or, more accurate than that, be unemployed pedaling their drivel in some other small market town….. take it from someone who personally knows how these “columnists” think, it’s all about the negative because that’s what keeps them employed……
sad part is, there are many fans who are swayed by their “opinions” and write the Bills off before they have even had the opportunity to play a meaningful game. Come on folks….. why don’t we let the losses pile up before counting on the first pick in the draft before the season even starts because some empty talking (or writing) head needs to qualify for a column next week…. here’s hoping the Bills are competitive on MNF (and the rest of the season), provide some wins and, should they really do well, I shall relish watching these “sports writers” backpedal and eat crow.
It rubs the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again
WGR is a national disgrace
I live in North Carolina and when I go home to Buffalo, they have to have the worst talk show for sports of any I have ever heard. All they can talk about is the Sabres and Bills 24×7. And the Bulldog is so articulate with all of his “you-knows”, while Schlempy or whatever his name is should be doing the traffic in some copter in Los Angeles. Everybody needs satellite radio in that town.
I think his response says it all...
“OK, but your team is a dysfunctional mess and a national joke. ===”
The main part of that statement that sticks out to me is this: “your team”…he is obviously not a Bills fan, and as all die-hard Bills fans here know, unless you are a die-hard Bills fan, you don’t know crap about the team. The only people who do know anything about the team either get paid to know such as scouts and rumor agents such, Glazer, Schefter, LaConfora, etc or they bleed blue and red and live and die with every game. The guy is an idiot, how can someone live so close to the team, yet exhibit so little knowledge of the league and its guiding principles and realities like free agent acquisition success rates, draft pick success rates, coach hiring success rates, and “moneyball” to borrow a phrase from baseball, that helps determine future success and how much drop off their is between a starting player and his backup using sabermetrics, although the term is used primarily for baseball, the statistical analysis can be used for football (this is in reference to his complete misunderstanding of the Walker release). To get paid to do his job, then you should be doing your best to understand the players, the coaches, and most importantly, the game.
Every...
Bills fan should live in BILLS COUNTRY ! Be true to your school, where you live !
i second that
oh…hang on a second!
"I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important - like a league game or something." Dick Butkus
Totally agree with you!
I’m from Winnipeg and I hear way too much negativity with our local sports. The local paper is so negative its ridiculous. It starts getting contagous. We had a local NHL team, and like the Bills had some real tough years . The local media always had negative things to say about the Jets. Nothing positve at all. A long story short, we lost the Jets! When they left the media and the local writers and haters (many whom are still around) talk about how they miss the Jets. One writer in particular always talks about how he hopes another NHL team will comeback, which i can’t stand because he was the biggest basher when they were around.
No matter how bad it gets these guys writing have jobs because of teams like the Bills. So start writing some better articles.

Good job MBF..
you gotta luv the BILLS. There all we have, except for the sabres. I feel the same way about both teams. Losing the Bills Or the Sabres, would feel like a loss of an ally .It will happen,I just hope i’m gone . AFTER; SB win 2009,2010,2011 and so on
That guy is a wet fart. You hear him and he sounds good and loud, but you realize he feels lousy.
That response is out of line. When I call up, the two times I have called, I say something like “are they worse off without these guys?” Then I get run off the show. The last time I called was when they were talking about putting Kelsay on the trading block and I said that.

You can’t get mad at Anne Coulter for being Anne Coulter. You can’t get mad at Janeane Garofalo for being Janeane Garofalo. And you shouldn’t get mad at the WNY sports media for being the WNY sports media. This isn’t new. I drive into Buffalo during the holidays every year and there has been one constant: I know I am getting close as soon as I can get WGR (around Erie) and I know I am nearly at Ferdonia when I have to turn that crap off.
It’s not that I am mad at the commentators or the beat writers. It’s that they spout obnoxious (noxious) gas seemingly no matter what is happening, and its old and played out. But they get people chattering. I am not going to fall for it.
