Is Jim Mora Jr. worth a look

When Jim Mora Jr. got fired after one season as head coach of the Seahawks, I was surprised.  After all, injuries played almost as big a role in the their season as it did in ours.  I admit I don't know very much about Mora as a coach.  I found this.....Give it a read.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/SEA/article/83299

Reminds me of a cerain ex-Bills head coach who just won a playoff game.  In my opinion, Mora got the short end of the stick in Seattle.  I am not sure if he is the best candidate, but at least he has head coaching experience, is still young and full of energy.  At the very least, his name deserves some discussion.

I’m not interested in Mora for a bunch of reasons. His obvious pull to the Pacific Northwest doesn’t thrill me. He was coaching the Falcons and still couldn’t shut his mouth. He seems to buddy-buddy with his players. He’s “meh” to me.

I would like to hear the reasons

Like I said, he may not be the best candidate, but he does have experience. Did he make some dumb mistakes? Yes, but he keeps getting hired for a reason. Mike H is no dummy and must have had a say in Mora being the HC in waiting. You say he is buddy buddy with players and K says the doesn’t get his players respect…..which is it?

Don’t get me wrong, it is not like I am “hot” for Mora, but I do want to know why he got fired after one season.

It could be both

buddy-buddy and without his players’ respect. For instance, I recall reading a story (I don’t recall the source) when Mora was the head coach in Atlanta. They had a team-building activity, but Mora and DeAngelo Hall snuck off and did their own thing. Mora has always seemed like “one of the guys” and not really a figure of authority. Somewhat fake and in over his head.

I get the feeling that if Tim Ruskell was still there, Mora would be too. I don’t know what’s been going on in Seattle. Their arrow’s been pointing down for a while. Since they lost the Super Bowl, I have not been impressed with many of their personnel decisions (not drafting/letting the QB and OL get old, bad drafting, giving a big contract to an old worn Alexander, the Deion Branch trade, overpaying for old second-tier players like Kerney, Trufant, and Houshmandzadeh, etc.).

Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

by Fort Worth on Jan 10, 2010 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Could be both I guess......we do need a HC that knows how to be a leader of men

Houshyourmama was a good pickup, but you still need a QB to get him the ball.

Whoseyourmamma

They had bigger roster problems and should have invested elsewhere. They paid him and talked about him like a No. 1 receiver, but I don’t think he is.

Mora would be a terrible decision.

You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast! - The Hangover

Both. He seems too chummy with his players to be able to make tough decisions and get respect for it.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 11, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

No, no, no

He stinks.

He looks overmatched out there and doesn’t look too capable of making adjustments. He seems like an egomaniac that doesn’t get the respect from his players that other coaches get.

I’m not a fan of a guy who got fired twice from his head coaching position, especially one that lost his players in his last stop.

The adjustment thing would be a problem....I hate that

I don’t know much about him being an egomaniac or not getting respect…and links to stories about that?

I would say the lack of development of Vick and an unfortunate comment about wanting to coach for the Huskies got him fired in Atlanta. "that if it were offered, he would take the head coaching job at the University of Washington (a job that was not open), “even if [the Falcons] were in a playoff run.” 3 While Mora later claimed that he was only kidding," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_L._Mora

I would like to know more about why he was fired from Seattle.

This one seems easy....
I would like to know more about why he was fired from Seattle.

Maybe because they knew they could get Carroll?

Remember Mora was the coach in waiting hired by Holmgren (I believe). With new leadership taking root there, I think they wanted their own guy, although it’s tough to tell without a GM.

That was my impression, which lead me to say that Mora got the short end of the stick

Mora might not be a flashy big name, but I am not sure I would hold him getting fired by Seattle against him.

But his team also quit on him

Or at least it sure appeared that way.

They were looking for a new coach weren’t they?

I am not sure I would call those guys "his" players....and whether they quit on him or not?

I guess I didn’t know they were looking to dump Mora. If Pete C wasn’t looking to get the hell out of Dodge before the shooting starts, I wouldn’t doubt he would still be HC.

Not a fan of the youth movement

I realize everyone has to start somewhere, but the Josh McDaniels of the world don’t exactly impress me. Give me someone that has been there and done that, not some smart coordinator that is benifiting from the success of the entire team including HC and other staff memebers. Someone that shows leadership just by looking at him.

Is it really average talent or just poor coaching, how important is depth and experience.

by VanScottM on Jan 10, 2010 10:58 AM EST reply actions

Mora has much more HC expereince than Josh M

No doubt Mora has made mistakes as HC in Atlanta, but he barely had time to make any as HC in Seattle, and I still can’t find out what they were and why he got fired. Mora certainly didn’t have time to build “his” team in one season.

he is an excuse making loser

he publicly calls out his players for their mistakes and has only had success as a postion coach so that is where he belongs

It is not always a bad thing to call out players.....and many here were asking for Jauron to do just that

Has this guy ever been good? NO!!

I looked him up and he really stinks. He really stunk up the joint in Atlanta and now again with Seattle.

You’d think that with a Defensive background and the players that SEA has on Defense that they could have done better than 25th in Pts and 24th in Yards:
AaronCurry, Marcus Trufant, LeRoy Hill, Lofa Tatupu, Patrick Kerney, Red Bryant

Before becoming a HC, he was a DC for San Fran from 1999 to 2003 and their Defensive ranking during his tenure was horrible:
           PTS YDS
1999 30 28
2000 28 29
2001 9 13 (It should be noted that in 2001 the 49ers offense ranked 3rd in Pts and 4th in yards)
2002 18 14
2003 21 13

So the question is how the hell did this guy ever get a HC job?

Nothing left to say...

Mora was hired by the Falcons in 2004 and was given a 3 year extension at the end of the 2005 season

He couldn’t have been that bad.

Dick Jauron was hired in 2006 and was given a 3 year extention halfway through 2008.

Dick must be twice the coach Mora is!

I have to say, I am surprised at how many people don't even want to give Mora an interview

After all, he had the common sense to turn down Snyder for the Skins job……hmmmmm…..maybe he wouldn’t want the Bills job either?

Haha…I just really don’t like Mora as a candidate. I really think you have to hire someone who was at the very least, successful in their last role- no matter what level it was at.

Names like Cowher, Billick, Frazier, Schottenheimer(s), Rivera, Harbaugh, etc. were all successful in their last stop. The Seahawks went from playoff fixture to doormats in the two years Mora was there. I think Mora needs to re-establish himself with a successful stop as a coordinator before you could sell him to me.

One of the reasons I HATED the Jauron hiring was that Detroit’s defenses weren’t successful under Jauron, so I didn’t underdstand his gaining a promotion. Same goes for Schonert’s promotion to offensive coordinator from failure as QBs coach with Losman and Edwards. To me, previous success is the best indicator of future success.

Aaron Maybin is Chris Ellis 2.0.

Good post, you make some good points....but is a year as HC enough time to decide if he was unsuccessful this time around?

If it was Mora’s fault that the Seahawks defense went down hill, why was he given the HC job when Mike H left?

One year as head coach and two years in Seattle isn’t an honest shot, but it’s still his most recent track record. When you have hundreds of candidates for a position, I don’t see a reason to pick someone who didn’t get the job done at last gig. No matter what coach they pick sometime this month, it won’t guarantee a successful or unsuccessful outcome for the Bills going forward, but I think your best bet is to try someone who has something about this game figured out right now as evidenced by recent success at some level. Mora doesn’t pass that test at the moment.

Aaron Maybin is Chris Ellis 2.0.

He was HC for 3 years in Atlanta and only one (this past year) in Seattle.

As one from Seattle...

I can tell you that things in Seattle cashed this year. The problem with Mora was that he was unable to make changes. The team seemed to get worse everygame regardless of injuries. I like his attitude and his lack of self control, but he seems to be lacking the necessary tools, something we have grown accostumed too.
