I’m not sure Frazier is the man, but I did hear last week that the Bills found their man and it wasn’t Bill Cowher.

If they "found their man"

and it’s not Cowher, then it has to be Frazier since they’ve only talked to them an Fewell. Unless they’re being super-secretive for whatever reason, who else could it be?

there's a lot going on behind the scenes

We don’t know who they have talked to. They may well have done a video conference interview with Jim Harbaugh, for example, as a way of keeping the event secret. Beyond that, you can be sure Buddy Nix has been on the phone constantly calling contacts around the league to check up on various candidates. Anyone who has done a lot of hiring knows that you should NEVER rely primarily on the job interview in making your decision. That’s the best way to make a big mistake. What you should do is conduct a lot of research on your candidates by talking to people who know them and can tell you how they handle themselves in the normal course of action (i.e., not on the unusual occasion of a job interview). Perhaps the combination of his research on Frazier and the four hours he spent with him on Thursday has convinced Buddy Nix that Frazier is “the man.” But it’s also possible that what he has heard about young Schottenheimer or Harbaugh or Russ Grimm or someone else has made that person the “clubhouse leader.”

And of course the Bills are taking their time in part because the candidates they are looking at are mostly working for teams who are involved with postseason play. We couldn’t offer them a job now even if we wanted to. Beyond that it’s clear that they are continuing to wait out Bill Cowher, hoping that he will see that the Bills are indeed his only opportunity if he wants to return to coaching next year (Cowher, for his part, is probably keeping his eye on the situation in Carolina to see how things break with John Fox).

In short, a lot is happening that we can’t see. So far as I can tell they seem to be handling this search very well, and I can’t imagine any reason why we would want them to rush into a bad decision. We all need to be patient.

I agree

For once, we can take our time and make a sound decision instead of rushing to a conclusion. If Cowher isn’t sure he wants to coach the Bills, then I want a coach who wants to be here?

Like you said, alot going on behind the scenes. I’m sure there have been more looks at coaches on the “list” that we may not know about like Harbaugh.

I i were head coach i would make the greatest team EVER!!!. First off we’d run a 2 QB formation. Vick a QB and Jimmy Clausen as QB the defence will never know who will get the snap so we can either run or throw.

Then i’d draft Aurelious Benn in the 3rd round because he’s pimp

Then i’d trade Maybin/Lynch/2nd rounder/JBYRD for Jared Allen and then trade Stroud and kelsey for Chad Greenway. We would have the best DL EVER!!! KW/Schobel/Allen/Greenway it’s sweet cuz thats a bunch of scary white guys… I guarentee if we do that we go 19-0 for 9 years in a row

You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast! - The Hangover

more conjecture

can’t we just get a coach?
Whoever it is, it must be a coordinator on a playoff team since they would should of hired, or at least been in negotiations by now

Can't we get a winner.... Go Bills 2010 !!!!

by killascript on Jan 10, 2010 10:43 AM EST reply actions

NO kidding!

I’m really starting to get annoyed with this process! If it’s NOT Cowher, then I wish SOMEONE other than some reporter looking for attention or some dumb blogger could tell us flat out “look people, Cowher does not want to coach here, we are NOT getting him, pleave move on”. It’s increasingly frustrating holding on to false hope simply because the fact that no one is giving us any kind of credible info allows that window of hope to stay open, no matter how unrealistic iy may actually be in reality!. But even if no Cowher, I can’t for the life of me understand why Brian Billick or Marty has not as much gotten a phone call! (if what we are hearing is true!)

I’ll just say this now: I do NOT want Frazier! I don’t want a whole offseason of “he could be this, he could be that” and people trying to justify that he will be any different than any other Coordinator they’ve hired for cheap, having no HC experience!. He may be ok, but after the past DECADE, do we really have the luxury anymore of waiting to find out???!! Ralph AND Buddy BOTH said at Buddy’s hiring that they want someone with EXPERIENCE! Well SO DO THE FANS! If they back down on THIS, and hire another scrub DC as our HC, then Buddy’s lost all his cred with me already, and I’ll just assume that any talk of “commitment to winning” is a lie as well. I have been a Bills die hard my entire life, but I’m on fumes! I’ve never seen any team in professional sports run this poorly for this long. Really no point in keeping the team here if they are only gonna torture the loyal fans with more mismanagement, bad decisions, and continue our reputation as the laughing stock of the NFL.

What is to say that the guy with no head coaching experience isn’t going to be better than Cowher? That’s why these interviews are conducted, folks. To gauge whether Frazier would be the next Jauron, or the next Rex Ryan. And on the same token, to gauge if Cowher or Schottenheimer can still coach like they used to, or if he won’t be 100% on board. I understand your impatience, but this team is going to go through at least two more years of rebuilding. I don’t think waiting a week or two to find out who will be doing the rebuilding will kill you that much. And please, try to have some faith that Buddy Nix knows what he’s doing. Please?

I hope it is, but I seriously don’t think he wants to come back to coaching, but again you never know with Marty.
FWIW, I think he could be referring to Jim Harbaugh, who I happen to be in favor of at this point. He’s a very bright, fiery young offensive mind that has been a HC before, which is obviously a plus, and having been a player in this league is a plus, too, imo.

Agree it could be harbaugh

As we saw with Pete Carrol College coaches are just not interviewed with outside knowledge. One thing that seems peculiar is what did Nix and Brandon do Tuesday and Wednesday? They interviewed Perry Monday and Frazier Thursday but those two days we heard nothing from the Bills. maybe a secret interview with a college coach?

by mjflair on Jan 10, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

Could be

Good thoughts guys

The Carroll thing came out of nowhere, so a secret Harbaugh interview wouldn’t be a huge surprise now. I’d like them to bring candidates to the facilities and city though, but that can be done later I suppose.

If it was Harbaugh, wouldn’t he be offered the job and made a decision by now? That’s why its probably an NFL coordinator that’s still coaching his team….

Fewell and Frazier were interviewed. Fewell is close to impossible, unless the team pulls another “Wilson” by doing the “hiring from within” stunt. Whats the difference between Bill Cowher and Marty Schottenheimer?

In stead of comparing spread sheets and data base’s lets just say the difference would be about 5 million in salary. How much would you sell your soul for? Cowher can stay in television , he wants nothing to do with Parcells or Bellichek twice (4 times) a season. Cowherd. I do believe they have thier choice and they will let us know when they feel appropriate. Lets say it is going to be Cowher. Why can’t he finish the season with CBS with the country knowing what his next gig is. Obviously, I am not a huge fan of Bill Cowher, but then I can’t support anyone that is here because there wasn’t a better choice.

Is it really average talent or just poor coaching, how important is depth and experience.

Bad bad bad Cowher news

Via Adam Shefter:

Panthers took the highly unusual step of allowing HC John Fox to void last year of contract. But no offers out there better than one he has.
On the John Fox deal, he wouldn’t void his deal unless a better offer came along. One hasn’t. So for now he remains as the Panthers HC.

Profootballtalk’s take on it:

The odd situation in Carolina surrounding John Fox just got a little stranger.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Panthers gave John Fox the option to void the final year of his contract if he chose to.

So, to review: The Panthers told Fox he could come back. But he wasn’t going to get a contract extension, and he could leave if he wanted to.

Perhaps Fox would have left if a better job opened up for him, but that hasn’t happened. And the odds are against i happening now.

So Fox remains in Carolina, Bill Cowher looms nearby, and Fox will be mentioned as another big name coach that should be available to fill a vacancy in 2011.

Pat Moran’s take on it:

Absolutley horrible news about Carolina’s Fox. This pretty much will nail the coffin done for Cowher to Bflo.
Probably all the motivation Cowher needs to wait one more year and take Carolina job in 2011. Owner willing to let Fox void last yr of deal

If this is true...

Why aren’t the Bills in on John Fox if he’s really available? I think I’d take him over just about every available coach besides Cowher. We give Fox the long term deal he’s looking for, Cowher goes to Carolina where he wants to be. Seems to work for everyone.

I agree

Fox in Buffalo could be a good fit. Of course, he might bring Delhomme with him though.

I think we can say Fox isn’t the leader in the clubhouse.

I wish Carolina would just fire him. What the he** kind of decision is this? Well, John, you can come back if you want, but we don’t really want you in the future, so you make the decision so we don’t have to pay you if you quit. I bet he ends up fired in a few weeks if he doesn’t leave in case Carolina can save some $.

That definitely doesn’t help the coach or the team…

This could be posturing by Buddy Nix

knowing that there are limited oppurtunites to coach this year because there are some teams unwilling to let go of coaches because of the uncertainty of the labor situation Nix is trying to create some urgency for the other candidtaes to act… if Cowher wants to coach and thinks that the BIlls may be one of the only places he can go if he thinks that they are close to making a decision then he may speed up his decison making process and give a definate answer sooner so the BIlls can then move on or bring him in

well

I guess Buddy Nix told Ralph in his interview basically something like this:

Look, I’ve been around football all my life. I help build this dynasty in Buffalo in the 1990’s and I was instrumental in the Chargers success of this decade. I know how to evaluate a football player, and most importantly, I know that if I get “my” kind of football players in here through the draft, and get a HC that can teach and develop players that have the passion for the game and a potential to reach a very high ceiling, then we don’t need some big name HC to come in here. We’ll use that money to invest in a superstar player that may be our QB for years to come, or some other key position like DE or OT."

I think Buddy Nix sold Ralph on him being a “football” man and a guy who can get the job done at a price that will allow them to spend more money on FA’s and acquiring players possibly through a trade or something to get a QB.
