2010 Starters and Depth

Greetings Rumblers! This is my first post on the site, although I have been following it for quite some time now, and I like the football knowledge and Bills-specific information, as opposed to other sites that just read the final score and stat sheet and make decisions on the Bills based on public perception.

Star-divide

Unlike most fans, I actually had high hopes for this past year. I envisioned Trent rounding into form, an offensive juggernaut featuring TO, Evans, Lynch, Jackson, and a host of young stars in Hardy, Johnson, and Nelson that would tear up the scoreboard. Maybin was unstoppable, and if he was stopped, Shoebel would be there instead. McKelvin was a lockdown corner, Poz and Mitchell were everywhere, and our young offensive line, even without Walker, would quickly get used to each other with minimal growing pains. Pass the Kool-aid.

What happened? Besides the obvious lack of talent at certain positions (cough, Trent), the Bills ended up putting almost two entire starting units on IR. Now, I know that injuries are a part of the game, but they always have been, and some teams manage to find a way to win in spite of them. These teams have depth (gasp!). We did not. We had (and have) a lot of dead weight that was unable to perform up to standards in crunch time. Perhaps if there weren't so many players on IR, we might still be talking this season's football instead of draft. Probably not, but who knows. What we can glean from this, though, is that there is no room on this football team for players that can't play.

I put together a realistic starting O and D, and grouped the rest into depth to see where the holes would be. The results-

QB: ?
LT: ?
LG: Levitre
C: Wood or Hang
RG: Butler or Wood or Incognito
RT: Butler or Bell
WR1: Evans
WR2: Hardy or ?
TE1: Nelson
TE2: Schouman
RB: Jackson

DE1: Schoebel or ?
DE2: Kelsey or Maybin
DT1: Stroud
DT2: Williams
LB1: Mitchell
LB2: Poz
LB3: ?
CB1: McGee
CB2: Florence
SS: Whitner/Scott
FS: Byrd

K: Lindell
P: Moorman
LS: Sanborn

Depth:
QB: Fitz, Brohm or draft project
RB: Lynch, ?
OT: whoever doesn't start, Meredith, Scott
OL: Incognito, Hang
WR: Johnson, Jenkins, ?
TE: Fine, ?

DE: Maybin, Ellis, ?
DT: Johnson, ?
LB: Ellison, Buggs, Palmer or Harris
CB: McKelvin, Corner, Youboty, Lankster or Harris
S: Scott or Whitner, Wilson

So we need:
A starting LT
A starting QB
A starting LB
Potentially a starting DE
Potentially a starting WR, depending on Hardy or Johnson.

and for depth:
A third string RB
A WR
A TE
A DE
A DT

Obviously this can't all be addressed in the draft, but cheap FA's are out there for depth players. Overall, we need to be better prepared when injury strikes, so that Nic Harris and Ashlee Palmer aren't starting LB's.  Thoughts?

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

But for syntax purposes I’d call Kyle Williams DT#1 (he’s certainly earned it). I still think Bell could become a solid LT — he was getting better before his injury, and what could we really expect from a 1st year starter that was probably started a year too soon? Other than that, I think Whitner could legitimately be placed last for S. He may be better than Byrd “all-around” for now, but like you have already, Byrd should be the starter so he develops. WIlson and Scott have seemed fairly dependable as starters.

As far as filling in our needs via draft, unless someone great falls to us:
*trade back a few spots to acquire a 2nd (or 3rd, im not certain on how the value works).

1) Bryan Bulaga – OT
2) Brandon Spikes – LB (if not available, best DT or Sean Lee)
2) Eric Decker – WR (could be late 1st or 3rd rounder — very talented with great hands)
3) Best DT available (best LB available if we go DT in round 2)

i really like ur idea of trading back

If we could trade back i woud like us to look at Iupati as a RT possibly then in the second go for someone falliing like Rey maualuga did last year…i think maybe dez bryant could fall cuz of him being suspended but he would offer great value prob wishful thinking spikes is another possibilty too or even brian Price he is a bull rusher who collapse the pocket he might be a great thrid down DT like rocky bernard

Trading back

In principle its a good idea, but unless someone wants to jump ahead of Jacksonville to take Tim Tebow I don’t know how attractive the 9th pick is. The player you’re getting isn’t necessarily better than the player you’d get later on but you have to pay him more. It’s one of the many reasons why mediocre is the worst thing you can be in the NFL.

Yeah, there’s just no way to know. Maybe Eric Berry drops and is still available, then it’s a hugely valuable pick. Or maybe a QB is there and Buffalo doesn’t want him, or a CB like Joe Haden would be somebody to move up for. I feel like one of the few, but I don’t believe that Jacksonville will take Tebow and is more likely to grab Haden or Derrick Morgan or BPA like Berry, a QB, Dez Bryant or Rolando McClain. So I could imagine a team trading up for any of those guys.

I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute

The Jags taking Tebow at #10 would be a dumb move

Now, if they trade back up in the draft to take him……they will probably still be overpaying for him but it wouldn’t be quite as bad. If the Jags are really that desperate for Tebow, I would start making some inquires about Tebow if I were the Bills. Make them believe we are considering taking him at #9. Then, see if they want to make a deal. Maybe we could get the Jags to give up next year’s first and this year’s second for our #9 pick.

I completely agree and yet it seems like everybody is mocking Tebow to the Jags with that 10th pick. The problem for the Jags is that they don’t have a 2nd round pick because they somehow thought it would be a good idea to trade it to NE in exchange for the Pats’ 3rd rounder from last year where Jax took a guy who probably would have been available the next round in CB Derek Cox. Trading down for Tebow and recovering the 2nd rounder they lost would make a ton of sense.

Make them believe we are considering taking him at #9

Yeah, how awesome would it be if Buffalo could pick up anything to move down one spot. That’s the kind of thing that could actually happen too because it wouldn’t be a GM or HC making that decision, it would be the owner mandating that the team find a way to grab Tebow.

I noticed that as well. It will be interesting to see if things change after the Sr Bowl. Unless Tebow shows significant progress in fixing his mechanical issues and absolutely lights it up, I don’t see how the Jags could justify reaching that far for him.

Tebow and Jacksonville

The Jaguars are really struggling with season ticket sales so the likelihood of them taking Tebow is based on them trying to capitalize on his popularity in the state of Florida rather than it being a sound football move. The Bills giving off the impression that they’re interested in him at 9 to get an extra pick out of Jacksonville would be a great move.

Ed reed may retire and Baltimore may want to trade up

they rarely trade up but they also know excatly who they want and could seek him out

good

i really like how you dont have us picking a quarterback this year that obviously wont be able to start like everyone wants…i was wondering what your thoughts about our quarterback for next year is. post more! :)

What happened you asked..

First we had above average injuries, secondly we had no depth [based on results]. You say “we need more depth” but I think there’s a big drop off talent wise when your forced to play your 2nd stringers as much as buffalo was. It takes a spendy team to have talented players sitting on the pine. Ain’t gonna happen in buffalo. We took home what we brought to the dance and it was’nt pretty. Not to say results would’nt been better if team had stayed healthy. Will never know if they could’ve been sucessful. Just bad luck on injury issue…

Why not...

I agree with an earlier post I read. Jason Campbell is a very good QB. He ranked 15th overall with no notable WR’s and a running game that sucked! Not to mention he has had to learn a new system EVERY YEAR with Washingtons OC carousel. I say we deal Lynch, to Washington ideal for a Shanny offence for Campbell. Leave Fred Jackson the starter and grab Mike Bell (FA) to be our power back. We have many more positions to sore up but this would allow us to use our top draft picks to fill the holes on our O line and pick up a QB prospect in the latter rounds to learn under Campbell over the next three years.

great timing, right? I decide to start posting coming into the most boring section of the season.
Although I guess for the Bills, this is when it gets interesting…

QB

There’s going to be a few decent QB’s: Campbell, maybe Hasselbeck

by JJBUD on Jan 16, 2010 2:51 PM EST reply actions

we don't need Seattles trash.

Campbell might turn into something decent though.

Darryl Talley = 235
Shane Conlan = 235
Cornelius Bennet = 240

I can settle for smallish linebackers.
