2009 Bills Draft Recap
We ultimatly had 8 total selection in the draft and we had some very good picks, here's a review
Aaron Maybin- Up to this point i'd have to give this pick an D-. But that is only because the coaches didn't play this guy much at all last seaon. Was i super excited when the Bills made this pick, NO( i was personally a huge Orakpo fan). Orakpo and Brian Cushing are both pro-bowlers( never was i a huge Cushing fan) but we also have a rookie pro-bowler who i'm sure you all know who i will discuss later. Back to Maybin, he had a great junior year at Penn State which ultimatly had him shoot up the boards in the draft. This kid is a work in progress and I think he will end up being a hybrid OLB/DE because he is way undersized to be a DE. Anybody heard of Vernon Gholston, that's who I think of when i think of Maybin. POTENTIAL is thw word.
Eric Wood- Our second 1st round pick which we got when we traded Jason Peters. Up to know i give it a C+, but only because he had that grueome leg inury. He's a great blue collar OG-C and he is extremely good looking as well. I think he has a bright future in the NFL and was what we needed to solidify that middle of the O-Line.
Jairus Byrd- Well i'm sure we all kno about this kid the ballhawk FS from Oregon and so far his grade is an A++. He was finaminal and was tied for the NFL lead with 9 INT's to end the season, eventhough he didn't play in about 5 games. I do have a minor problem with his INT's though and it's about 4-6 of those INT's were very easy to get, they were overthrown and went right to him. Maybe i'm dumb and he has a natural instinct of where the ball will be thrown and let's hope he does because if that is the case this kid has HOF written all over him!
Andy Levitre- Absolutly awesome this year i give him a A-. He was by far our best OL man and didn't get injured at all and as well he played great. Him and Wood are going to be a very strong middle to this OL for a long time.
Shawn Nelson- Another great pick and so far i give hi a B grade. Great reception TE and athletic. He was also very impressive for us and he also has a bright future. I am a huge fan of this kid and hehas the POTENTIAL to become an NFL stud!
Nic Harris- Well he played some and was decent at OLB and so far i gve him a C. He played some OLB for us this year and wasn't awful. I see him as a solid #4-5 OLB that will be useful.
Cary Harris- I didn't even know this guy existed until the seasons end when he had a 2 pick game against Indy. I can't say much but hopefully he becomes a solid back up.
Ellis Lankster- Absolutly no idea
Hope you enjoyed it!
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Agree mostly. The low grade to Wood kind of bothers me tho. He played a more important role in just as many games as Shawn Nelson played so I don’t see how hes a C- and Nelson is a B. And Nic even beat him in your grading! Thats it.
My proudest moment as a bills fan was watching Don Beebe chase someone down in a blowout. Is that sad?

I agree.....
Wood played a much larger role, and I think he did a great job considering. I also agree that Maybin wasn’t utilized, and can do nothing but improve. While I actually wanted Oher, I think Maybin could be pretty good in the near future. I really think we have a pretty bright future with the youth on this team, if only we can find the coach to mold them. Just my opinion.
Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

Levitre
I think you’re on the money with Maybin.
I’m really suprised to hear everyone raving about Levitre. He seemed to get tossed around a whole lot early in the season. He improved over the course, but by far I don’t have him as a A- or even a B-. Just my opinion, I’m not saying you are wrong.
Kinda harsh to knock someones draft grade down due to injury. I think Wood played much better than Levitre, most of the time. Again, just my opinion.
in a salary cap era, no single unit (offense or defense) should be consistently sub-average for such a long stretch.
???
and he is extremely good looking as well.
Well thank goodness he isn’t ugly.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
LMAO! Thank god I missed that, probably would've pissed myself!

Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.
AARIN MEIBIN IS TEH SUZZORZ, am I right?
What’ so funy the guy looks like a Greek God
You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast! - The Hangover
Had Maybin had a full training camp and played more than 10 snaps a game, who knows where he’d be right now?
I just can’t grade him on that basis.

agreed.
and the comparisons to Gholston aren’t justified as he isn’t switching positions.
Darryl Talley = 235
Shane Conlan = 235
Cornelius Bennet = 240
I can settle for smallish linebackers.

Wood is better than Levitre
I’m not saying that Levitre is bad (quite the contrary,) but I share kgun201’s opinion that Levitre developed more as the season went along. Where Wood started out strong and played that way until the injury.
But let’s go back to that Maybin pick. Imagine for a second if we picked Oher instead, then Wood and then Levitre. Now that’s how you rebuild an Offensive Line.
I’m praying for you Mr. Wood. We all are. Stay strong, because the road to recovery will be long.
I on;y gave Wood such a low grade because he got injured

the pick, itself, was good, whether or not he got injured.

Very good analysis
I love your point about the Byrd interceptions. Yea a lot of them were gift wrapped.I will say he was in the right positions on all of them. He made even better plays on some balls that he didn’t intercept i thought.
Overall this was a great draft. If you look at what we got, we essentially got three automatic starters in Wood, Levitre and Byrd. Nelson will be a starter next year and has made some strides and obviously has shown he is a rare prospect size and speed wise. I also look for Nic Harris to made some strides and maybe start next year. He was my favorite pick of the draft outside Nelson. Hey, even Lankster and Harris looked good, something Dick knew about- DB’s.
Also
If you add Mike Oher or Orakpo to this, it could have been a perfect draft. But time will tell on Maybin but I don’t have high hopes.
Yeah, those two guys who would have been playing different positions on this team would have been PERFECT!

Oher has played both LT and RT for the Ravens and is up for rookie of the year so i dont really see your point there. And Orakpo could have played LB or DE and actually could have done something soooo.
But lets go Maybin next year! I am pumped for him to bulk up to 255 like he says…sarcasm. Pretty funny, i think he realized fast he does not have the weight or strength to play DE in this league yet. Yea it worked in college, but not in the NFL. Good thing he is only 21 and has time to put the pounds on. But I highly doubt he has close to 11 sacks in one season or makes the Pro Bowl when he turns 23 but hey, Maybin has got elite potential they tell me.
