Some non-coaching draft based offseason discussion
If anybody else just feels kind of speechless about the Gailey news, here's some other offseason stuff to talk about. First on Gailey, I am completely surprised by this even though nothing should be surprising anymore. I think Gailey is a good coach and I'm not mad that Buffalo hired him, but how Nix, Ralph, Brandon or anybody who might have had some input on this thought that Gailey was the best move they could make, I have no clue.
I don't know if anybody ever checks out mocking the draft, but they're in the process of doing a full 7 round draft where somebody from each SBNation site drafts for the team. I grabbed the Bills and we just finished the first round. I actually got my dates crossed and didn't make the pick, but the player they choose for me, Anthony Davis, would have likely been my pick anyways. What I'm really looking for is some input on what to do in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Here's how the first round went, including some interesting trades:
1) St. Louis Rams – Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
2) Detroit Lions – Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
4) Washington Redskins – Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
5) Minnesota Vikings (from KC) – Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
6) Seattle Seahawks - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
7) Cleveland Browns- Joe Haden, CB, Florida
8) Oakland Raiders - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama
9) Buffalo Bills - Anthony Davis, OT, Rugters
10) Jacksonville Jaguars - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
11) Denver Broncos (from Chicago)- Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
12) Philadelphia Eagles (From MIA)- Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
13) San Francisco 49ers- Bryan Buluga, OT, Iowa
14) Seattle Seahawks (from Denver)- Bryan Price, DT, UCLA
15) New York Giants- Earl Thomas, S, Texas
16) Tennessee Titans- Donavan Warren, CB, Michigan
17) San Francisco 49ers- C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
18) Pittsburgh Steelers- Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama
19) Green Bay Packers (from ATL)- Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
20) Houston Texans- Taylor Mays, S, USC
21) Cincinnati Bengals- Damian Williams, WR, USC
22) New England Patriots- Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
23) Kansas City Chiefs (from ATL)- Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee
24) Miami Dolphins- Jerry Hughes, OLB, TCU
25) Baltimore Ravens- Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
26) Arizona Cardinals- Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson
27) Dallas Cowboys- Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
28) San Diego Chargers- Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
29) New York Jets- Jared Odrick, DE, Penn State
30) Kansas City Chiefs (from Minn)- Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho
31) Seattle Seahawks (from NO)- Charles Brown, OT, USC
32) Indianapolis Colts- Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
- The Chiefs trade the 5th overall pick to the Vikings for their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks.
- The Eagles trade their 1st, 2nd, and 5th round pick for the Dolphin's 1st round pick.
- The Giants traded their 2nd, 4th, and 6th round picks to the Lions for their 2nd and 7th round picks.
- The Falcons traded their 1st round pick to the Packers for their 1st and 4th round picks.
- The Falcons have traded their 1st round pick and 3rd round pick to the Chiefs for their two 2nd round picks and a 4th round pick.
- The New Orleans Saints trade their 1st and 6th round picks tothe Seahawks for their 2nd, 4th, and 5th round picks.
For a little commentary, I thought that both the Vikings and Chiefs made the right move with the big trade, although that's not a lot of value for the 5th overall pick. The Chiefs move back up to grab Dan Williams more than justifies the trade down though.
Here are the players I'm considering for the 9th pick in the 2nd round, what do people think?
QB - Jevan Snead
QB - Tim Tebow
RB - Jahvid Best
WR - Brandon LaFell
WR - Arrelious Benn
G/C - Maurkice Pouncey
DE - Greg Hardy
DE - Carlos Dunlap
DE - Everson Griffen
DE - Jason Pierre-Paul
DE - Brandon Graham
DE - Coorey Wooten
DT - Arthur Jones
LB - Sean Witherspoon
LB - Navorro Bowman
LB - Sean Lee
LB - Daryl Washington
I'm leaning away from QB even though Buffalo is desperate for one. I'll probably end up taking the best DE/DT/WR available, although Weatherspoon and Pouncey are right in the mix too. Who is everybody's favorite and least favorite DE left? Who's better, Benn or LaFell?
I'm also curious what positions Rumblers think needs to be addressed by the third round. If I don't grab a QB here, do I need to reach on one even if guys like Colt McCoy and Tony Pike are gone? Is a best available that fills a hole approach still the way to go in the 3rd, even if I grab defense here and the BPA is an outside LB like Rennie Curran or a 2nd OT like Jason Fox or a DT who isn't a fatty like Lamar Houston?
I'll take any and all thoughts, advice or whatever people have to say about this round or the rest of the mock into consideration.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Well now with Chan – I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bills move on Tebow in the 2nd. He worked with crappier QBs……
but then again – what do I know…….
Hello - thanks for reading my signature. It's very interesting. Bye
I would pee my pants if we got Tebow in the 2nd

I save peeing my pants for special occasions because if I pee my pants to much, my wife makes me do the laundry ….. and don’t even get me going on skid marks :-(

wow!
that was…that was just soo much information about your swimsuit area!

I figured truth was optional.

I’d go with Bowman…guy is a beast. My vote for best DE left goes to Dunlap. Benn over LaFell. I’d go BPA in the 3rd.
Agreed on Bowman
I’d go Bowman. BUF gets OT in 1st round. LB in 2nd round. If they draft Bowman, they can keep Poz inside. However, I did want to see McClain inside and Poz move outside.
In regard to QB, you can grab LeFevour in the 3rd round.
I hope BUF makes a trade for McNabb so that we can have a Veteran Starter while they groom a future rookie QB.

Just a side note…I can’t believe I typed this last post. I hate Penn State and I hate Philadelphia sports…oh well…..

Then all the more reason to steal those guys away from those teams and bring them to Buffalo. Our gain is their loss!

Interesting list
I love Pierre-Paul’s athleticism but his (and also Dunlap for that matter) motivation is questionable. Both have taken many plays off and that spells trouble for them in the NFL.
B-B-B-Byrd Byrd Byrd, Byrd is the Wyrd!"
I’m more worried about Dunlap’s motivation than JPP. It’s possible that Pierre-Paul was simply overwhelmed at times or just lacked the recognition ability to figure out what’s happening before the play is over. Could be not that bright as well as that’s probably why he ended up going the JUCO route. To me, JPP is more of a question mark in general with only one D-1 season than a guy with very specific concerns. So, I wouldn’t worry about his work ethic as much as I worry about the big picture of inexperience and lack of production. He’s so long and fast though. Could be a Justin Tuck type of stud.

OT or trade...
I like Okung or Davis if we take an OT because they have been consistently dominant for more than 1 year. I also would love to find someone (49ers maybe) who would trade with us to get ahead of Jax and select Tebow. Then we could pick up an extra 2nd rounder and get a LB, DT, DE, or another OT. QB is a tough call I actually would love to get Mike Vick and see what he can do with us for a couple years. Then we wouldn’t have to take a QB so high (but I’m all for taking one in 4th round and later or wherever Nix feels he can get a good prospect) and could focus on our lines and LB.
more thoughts......
possibly D’Anthony Smith in the 3rd.
people around here seem to be high on LeFevour, I would try and snag him in the 4th.
I would have no issues with Gilyard or Shipley in the 2nd.
Jerry Hughes?
Tough decision, could go any way
I kind of like productive players over physical freaks, but guys like Dunlap and JPP are damn intriguing.
I really like Brandon Graham. Greg Hardy would be a good choice too, but injuries are a concern.
Tebow is a very logical choice if you’re convinced he will be a starter soon.
I love Weatherspoon and Washington. Both would be nice LB picks. I don’t want Bowman or Lee, undersized players.
Benn or LaFell don’t do a lot for me. I’d take them in round 3, but not right here.
It would be nice to have multiple 2nd round picks. This is a lot of available talent…

haha, how not helpful. You like almost everybody! I’m in the exact same spot though and really have no clue what to do. I’m hoping that the first 8 picks narrows it down a lot.
I think Bowman will play a lot bigger in the pros. His frame has the room for a lot of bulk to be added and I’d bet he’s 235 by his pro day and could even play heavier than that. I’m surprised by how many people would want him at the top of the 2nd though.
Agreed on Sean Lee. I just threw his name out there because a lot of people probably consider him to be the best MLB left.

LB or trade down
The team is just desperate for a LB. If you can’t find one who fits at the 9th slot in the 2nd then drop back and take a LB later in the 2nd or in the 3rd if you must.
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.
Yeah, I’m strongly considering a trade down. There’s probably the talent available to find a taker too.

Wait until the 3rd for a QB
And grab Dan LeFevour.
The Dick Jauron version of the K-Gun...the Squirt Gun.
Hmmm, I think with Chan saying he is open to moving to a 3-4, LBer becomes second highest need right now
As much as I want a new QB, I think we are better served waiting till 2011 since no one left is really a start right now guy.
Nix and Chan, the new Cheech and Chong of the Bills, hopefully they will be as successful in business as they were, and not so much the drug fueled comedy act....
Also, stunned that the Raiders blogged made the McClain pick, that would be what I would do as the Bills chooser
That poor SOB should just throw a dart at a huge list of prospects and use that, it seems to be the way Al Davis picks his guys.
Nix and Chan, the new Cheech and Chong of the Bills, hopefully they will be as successful in business as they were, and not so much the drug fueled comedy act....
Lineman
Build around lines off/ def. Any picks that address these positions would go along way in improving the Bills. O.T.1st pick. Great! Do we have enough talent along are lines to stop there? If so address LB. Remember the saying " your only as strong as your weakest link". Seemed to me we had alot of weak links along the line. Hopefully team starters will stay out of mash unit next season, just saying…
Im surprised Iupati went in the first round. I was hoping we’d get best available T then go Iupati in second. What a line that would/could be!
But as far as DE I’d go Griffen because he’d be a fit in a 4-3 and a 3-4 i think.
LeFevour is good. But not NFL good. If Pike does well in the senior games and impresses at the combine, I would take him in the 3rd.
Second round goes to Witherspoon I’d say.
Good Luck!
Couple thoughts and my top 3 choices
1. Weatherspoon – the guy was a monster for mizzou. His weight is why i would take him over the other LBers, If we go light weight LB i would rather keep Ellison as a starter.
2.Graham, Dunlap or Griffen- All three are productive players and have started for most of their career, which is why i put them over JPP who is one year out of JC.. Dunlap and Griffen are freaks athletically while Graham reminds me alot of Lamar Woodley.
3 Arthur Jones- Although i like Spencer Johnson, I think Jones will be very good and can eventually replace Stroud.
I really would use the 2nd round pick on the D side of the ball. Not really a fan of any of the guys available on O except for maybe Pouncey. Is RB going to be an option? if you go BPA then i would suggest Dwyer from GT, especially if we think Lynch is gone.
Kaiser
We Der Jaeger and I made the pick for you. We tried to trade down, but didn’t have enough time. I would personally try to trade up and get Tebow. I think that would be a great draft and we probably could move up to get him for a 4th rounder. I do not think he will get past Washington, so I would try to move up before them. When does the 2nd round start?
I am going to reply to myself
Don’t trade up. If Tebow falls to you great. If not, I would go LB. I personally like Witherspoon and Lee (for different reasons), but it is going to depend on who is there.

Thanks for making that pick for me. It was a good one for sure, especially considering how none of the other top OTs made it out of the first.
I’m really on the fence about Tebow. I have no clue what to think of him. Part of me likes his natural arm strength, athleticism and intangibles and the other part thinks that if he had been going undefeated at Boise St. instead of Florida, that he’d be a 4th round prospect who would even be a risky pick there. By nature, I’m a risk averse person, so unless I can trade down, I’m not taking him in the 2nd.

They took Anthony Davis for me in the first. New Orleans is on the clock here in the 2nd and I’m on deck, but the 2nd round doesn’t officially start until tomorrow, so I’ve got some time to decide or look for a trade.

well in that case...
I’d say go with Dunlap. Can you imagine if he and Maybin panned out?
by WhiskeySierra6 on Jan 19, 2010 11:42 PM EST up reply actions
It does make a ton of sense to find a huge DE like Dunlap to play on the opposite side of the line from Maybin too. Makes Maybin’s size less of an issue.

Picks have been trickling in all day. Among them few were guys I were considering:
33) St. Louis Rams- Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan
34) NY Giants- Navorro Bowman LB PSU
35) Tampa Bay Bucs- Arrelious Benn WR, Illinois
And then there were a few guys I wasn’t considering:
36) Kansas City Chiefs- Eric Norwood, OLB, South Carolina
37) Washington Redskins- Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech.
38) Clevland Browns- Demarious Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
39) Oakland Raiders- Kyle Calloway, OT, IOWA
Currently, I’m looking for a deal to move down, but I do need a backup plan. Witherspoon, Arthur Jones, LaFell (even though he hasn’t gotten any love here) and the DEs are still guys that I’m looking at. I just can’t justify taking one of the QBs here with so much other talent still available.

Take one of the DE's
I guess I’d go with Dunlap. The upside is tremendous and he has potential scheme versatility. He had decent production the past two years and really showed how good of a player he can be. It’s just a big question of whether he reaches his potential or not.
I’d rank my choices, in order, as Dunlap, Weatherspoon, Tebow, Griffen

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
So there was a mistake in there and the Rams guy actually wanted Griffin and not Graham.
Sean Witherspoon went 40th to the Saints.
So, the Bills are on the clock.
I’m looking to trade down and ATL is maybe offering me picks 50, 62 and a 6th rounder for my 41 and 72. It’s not a good deal, but I might take it anyways in the hope that I can still get one of Dunlap, Graham or JPP there and then take Tebow or Snead (sorry JPH) at 62. That would give the Bills three 6th round picks to play around with and maybe move around more later in the draft.

I think you should take Tebow now.
If we come out of this draft with a QB and a LT and no one else, this draft is a success. If we don’t end up with that QB, then we need to hit on a whole host of other things for the draft to become a success. I would take Tebow now, and not count on JAX passing on him twice.
Most importantly though, I repeat: Do not take snead. As long as you follow this one piece of advice, you really can’t go wrong.
Jonathan Stupar won the Heisman…while playing in the NFL!
I wouldn't take that trade

You aren't allowed to pick Jevan Snead.
He is the worst.
Don’t pick him now. Don’t pick him in the 3rd, or the 4th, or the 5th.

Buffalo boy going in the first round. Cool.
32) Indianapolis Colts- Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona

care to explain why you traded down rather than grabbing tebow in the 3rd? Seems like if you were considering him at 41, getting him at 73 would be a no-brainer? Have you decided to pass on him altogether?
...so I guess now I root for chan gailey...
