Call me crazy folks, but I think that Chan will put in a call to his old boss to become his new DC: Herman Edwards.
Think about it, Herm is a character guy who is a teacher first and has a very strong, and sound, defensive mind. He fits the criteria perfectly. Add that to the fact that Chan and Herm have worked together as recently as 2008 in KC (where Herm was HC and Chan was OC) and I think we have a match.
As for Herm himself. He started out as a defensive back coach in SD under Marty Schottenheimer, then moved to Tampa to become defensive back/assistant head coach under Tony Dungy. He was then Heac Coach of the Jets where he led them to the playoffs during 3 different season (amassing a 2-3 playoff record). And If I recall the Jets ran a pretty stingy 4-3 D under Edwards.
He was then trade to KC to become their HC in 2006, where he stayed for 3 seasons, and 1 playoff appearance. Again, his D was pretty good at first. His last 2 years in KC though are best forgotten.
Anyways, point is he's a good, no non-sense coach, that's a teacher first and that has learned from some of the game's best coaches (Marty Schottenheimer and Tony Dungy). Plus he has previously worked with our new HC, making him the front runner for the new DC job in my eyes.
The only possible hick up is the fact that Herm has been a HC for his last 8 years in pro-football, with 3 playoff births to show for it. Would he want to accept a job as a DC? Or is he waiting for an opportunity at another HC gig? I know that if I was him, I'd be taking what ever job comes my way, especially with how disastrous his last two years in KC were. I'm hoping that he sees it that way too.
What do you guys think of Edwrads as DC?
