Bills fire VP of Pro Personnel John Guy
Buffalo Bills fans wanted to see changes at the top of the organization. After Buddy Nix was named GM and Chan Gailey introduced as head coach, the changes continued late Wednesday night, as the Bills announced that they'd relieved VP of Pro Personnel John Guy of his duties.
Guy, who joined the Bills in 2001 under former GM Tom Donahoe, was promoted to VP of Pro Personnel in early 2008, right after Marv Levy left the organization. Guy reportedly interviewed for the Bills' GM position this past December, eventually losing out to Nix. Now, he's out of a job.
This is a move that Bills fans have longed for for years; Guy, long in charge of the team's free agent scouting, has been the target of fan angst after a long succession of unproductive free agent signings by the Bills.
VP of College Scouting Tom Modrak, who also joined the Bills upon Donahoe's arrival, is still employed by the organization. Time will tell if that's still the case once this spring's NFL Draft has been completed.

This makes me feel better about Nix. Does anyone think Gailey pushed this or was this Nix’s plan all along?

I hope Modrak is retained, our drafts haven’t been the problem, but the pro personnel department has stunk under Guy.
Mmmph rrgh prrmf! - someone with his mouth gagged
Wow.
To me, the drafts are about 80% of the problem. Trading up for Losman, trading up for McCargo, not having a pick until #55 overall in ‘05 because of the Losman deal, Maybin’s disappearing act, James Hardy and Roscoe Parrish in the second round, and on and on.
They’ve brought in some of the cornerstones of the current roster via the draft: Lynch, Poz, Evans, Reed, Wood, Levitre. But man…I count four impact every-down first rounders (Evans, McGahee, Whitner, and Lynch) out of the 10 first round picks they’ve made under Modrak. That ain’t good.
Admittedly the jury is still out on Wood, and McKelvin has looked okay when he’s actually been able to play. But I don’t see a lot of guys on the current roster, who’ve come through the draft, who are going to play a major role on the next Bills championship team. A lot of late-round players who are nice complimentary pieces. Not much else.
Didn't mean to ignore Byrd.
I’m a Duck fan, too. Jairus rules. He’ll be a part of the next great Bills team.
The point remains, though: They botch first rounders at least as often as they get them right. And even when they get them right, there aren’t any Hall of Fame contenders in there, just guys who – if they have a great season – have a chance to play in the Pro Bowl.
The problem
is we don’t know who was really calling the shots for those drafts. some of those choices were during the Marv Levy/Jauron time when there was no clear cut person that was responsible. we have heard that there was internal conflict with picks in the past so blaming this solely on Modrak is a mistake in my opinion.
I think we have a GM now that will be in charge of making the call and with his track record of success (albeit in an assistant capacity) I think we should see improvements in drafting players.
That's fair.
I don’t mean to pin it all on Modrak – there’s been plenty of suck to go around. I’m just saying the drafts have been generally pretty shaky and that I don’t see a ton of evidence that he’s done his job well.
Obviously I’m not privy to the behind-the-scenes machinations at OBD or anything, but just judging by the results on the field I’m ready for the Modrak era to end.
I understand and I’m not convinced he should stay either but this organization has been disfunctional for so long it’s nearly impossible to figure who’s to blame. as long as they do a thorough examination of the jobs these guys have done and then make their decision I’m fine with the result.
When a team sucks, no matter what the reason (injuries, lack of talent, or just bad coaching), isn’t it all on the coach anyway? Good coaches are fired all the time because they don’t get results for some reason or another.
I think Modrak should be in the same boat. No one else is left from the past who was making decisions, he is still here, he needs to go.

I'm very happy with the drafts for the most part
I’m just not happy with the ways the players have been utilized. Losman was a decent QB for a while, like Joey Harrington he just wasn’t a franchise guy you could rely on. McCargo was completely canceled out by Kyle Williams, a great draft pick by the way. Hardy and Maybin haven’t shown anything yet, in Hardy’s case because he has either been injured or not been played period. It’s true that he needs help route running but how many TDs did he catch with his 9 career receptions? I want to say 2? That’s a good player that just needs to be developed. Maybin stunk last year when he did get opportunities. But he’s not a bust yet, we have to wait at least one more year, eh?
As a team the Bills are comparatively successful with getting talent. We are picking from the same pool as everyone else, yet the players have sunk down into the Bills’ team standards of complimentary hardworking talentless players. There are other examples beside the case of Trent Edwards that make you scream Coaching!
I think you are wanting to see championship caliber players consistently in the drafts. Every down players. While we have had four that you named, we’ve also had a lot of others in the later rounds who have made significant contributions. This year’s draft was a great success, pretty much all the way down. When are the Bills going to take an Orakpo or a Peyton? Ehh, I’d like to think that doesn’t happen on 3/4 of the NFL teams.
Mmmph rrgh prrmf! - someone with his mouth gagged
Well, yeah...
…I’d like to see them take championship-caliber players consistently. That’s how you win championships.
I don’t mean to sound trite or anything, but if you’re not regularly bagging star-caliber players in the first couple of rounds, you aren’t going to win anything. It’s nice to pick up a Reggie Corner in the fourth round or a Shawn Nelson in the fifth round (or a Fred Jackson off the scrap heap), but that and a first-round McCargo adds up to something between diddly and squat.
I’m not saying you need an Orakpo every year, but who’s the last player the Bills have drafted who went to more than one Pro Bowl? (It’s Schobel, 2001, which coincidentally or not is the last pre-Modrak draft.)
The thing is, though, there aren’t always championship caliber players in the first round or two of the draft. Or there will be one or two, along with a host of players that just make up your team. It’s a disaster when you draft an Erik Flowers or a Mike Williams, but not when you pick a Donte Whitner or a Lynch. Those are meaningful contributions to your team that you have to augment with other picks later in the draft (which the Bills have done consistently) and free agent acquisitions (which we are a raging failure at).
Mmmph rrgh prrmf! - someone with his mouth gagged
Lynch has talent out the wazoo, he’s given us two great years and a disappointing year. How is that a bust?
Whitner’s the yin to Jairus Byrd’s yang. He can play the run and cover but has low playmaking totals. If anything he’s the bust of the two. Yet he’s an obvious team leader and a tackling machine who can also play cover corner in a pinch. This year he even improved on the interceptions.
Mmmph rrgh prrmf! - someone with his mouth gagged
lynch is a bust? he's already played in a pro bowl.
having an off year doesn’t make him a bust.
...so I guess now I root for chan gailey...
Just look at Vince Young. At the begining of the season he was a bust, now he’s a pro-bowler.

And you have to coach those players or use them to get the most out of them. The fact that Trent Edwards regressed so much under Jauron’s conservative approach is a damn shame. The fact that we can’t get anything out of an offense with Lynch, Jackson, Evans, Owens, Reed as weapons is another shame.
However, I’ll give you the fact that we haven’t been able to get pressure or work defensively against the run is a direct result of our drafting philosophy. But I’d bet that with Gailey on board instead of Jauron that will change. Gailey’s been forthcoming in mentioning that he’s not as concerned with scheme as he is with tailoring his offense to his personnel. I think that could be his philosophy regarding talent in general.
Mmmph rrgh prrmf! - someone with his mouth gagged
Well so much for the status quo thoughts
Let’s see who the replacement is first, and more importantly who they truly consider for the position.
I would think if the Bills were going to get rid of Modrak too he’d be gone at the same time (not that I’m advocating it) so I suspect he’ll be sticking around. Knowing Gailey doesn’t hurt either.
I doubt we’ll ever find out who they considered for the pro personel job. We’ll just hear who gets hired. It’s just not a big enough job for the media to care about it and report on it. And if they don’t see it coming, they never know what’s going on anyways, ie: Chan Gailey getting interviewed.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute
We’ll see on that. I think this coming draft (in a mere 3 months) is what would save or lose Modrak his job. If Nix perceives that Modrak did a good job finding the types of players that Nix and Gailey want, he probably stays. I doubt Modrak (and consequentially much of his staff) would get canned so close to the thing they’ve been prepping for during the last 9 months.

We haven’t had a great free agent pick up since TKO and the only decent one in recent memory was Mitchell. Overdue this move was.

Drayton definitely emerged as a solid corner for us last year. If it was Buddy who told us to sign him then I like him even more. Drayton might even start for us, he did a great job. I wouldn’t mind seeing us go with McGee (we’ll need to get a solid shut down guy soon to replace him), Florence, McKelvin, Corner, and Youboty or Cary Harris. But it seems like Buddy knows what he’s doing for the most part in the area of personnel.
ANyone think that had anything to do with him signing on after Nix did?

True, I suppose, but Stroud took a major step backward this year after getting his coin. To make matters worse some really pivotal pickups were totally botched: Hangartner, Dockery, Walker, Vincent etc. Our pro talent evaluation has been awful for years, even excluding the guys that were never expected to be quality starters but were forced into action due to inept roster building overall.

i hope you’re not implying that he is dogging it – he’s getting older and his skills will decline – part of the reason that Jax. was willing to trade….

Mitchell is an average signing
not consistant enough to warrent a good pick up. To me Poz and Him play basically at the same level with Mitchell costing much more.
Let the offseason begin
I think Mitchell is a good pickup.
He’s the only linebacker we have that gets consistent pressure on the blitz.
He’s good at timing the snap and jumping it.
Poz he gets stuck on blockers 90% of the time when we rush him.
It took until this year for Poz to get his first NFL sack.
There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.
by The Buffalo Kid on Jan 22, 2010 12:16 AM EST up reply actions
Mitchell plays outside, Poz in the middle.
He’s the only linebacker we have that gets consistent pressure on the blitz.
So hes blitzing but not getting sacks. That isn’t good. I agree that pressure helps. But as much as he blitzes he should get more sacks. Or someone else should at least get one as he should force the QB to move.
Poz he gets stuck on blockers 90% of the time when we rush him.
Since Poz is in the middle he will take on more blockers because the function of the MLB is to stop the run. Poz is a solid field general, but does get caught up in traffic at times. He is younger and shows more upside to me than Mitchell. Plus it is only Poz’s 2nd yr in the NFL, Mitchell is like yr 6.
Basically I’m saying this. When putting them side by side, neither one is a force like Patrick Willis. But Poz is younger and has more upside, than Mitchell. Regardless, we need Both of them on this team until we can find a better option or add a STUD to replace Ellison
Let the offseason begin
Two things:
The quote boxes (and every type of tag really), you need to put the quoted text between the > of the starting tag and the < of the ending tag. So if I wanna put a tag on something that says Hello, it would go something like:
< blockquote >Hello< /blockquote >
Just without the spaces. The preview button helps a lot too.
The other thing. It’s Poz’s third year. 3 games his first year (broken arm), 16 last year, 12 this year (broken arm again).

Let me get this straight.
They interview only 2 canidates for the GM job. Guy and Nix. A month later the loser gets fired. So basically Guy was only interviewed to appease the Rooney Rule, yes? So basically the Bills only had 1 guy in mind for the GM position, and he got the job.
Does this make sense? And for the coaching search, they interviewed Fewell to appease the Rooney Rule, talk to Frazier, and say @ the press conference only Chan Gailey was offered the job and met Mr. Wilson.
I’m sorry, but as much as I like that Guy is gone, nothing the Bills do is normal. Always shady, just my opinion.

Brian, do you understand what I’m trying to say?
The Seahawks and Browns did extensive searches OUTSIDE of the organization to get there GM’s.
The Bills looked down the hall, picked one for the Rooney Rule, and the other got the job. I just don’t think that’s how top level organizations, in sports or in buisness, pick people to run there buisness.
Nothing is normal with the Bills, and that’s why they are where they are with the fans, and media (local and national)

Now, we just to either fire Modrak or demote him to National Scout, which is really all he wants to be, anyway.
John Guy has been a huge part of the problem the last few years, because he has obviously been very bad at advising which FA’s we should pursue. Of course, not all falls on his shoulders; Dick Jauron, as far as I’m concerned, was also the culprit seeing that he had much more power than he ever should have had.
I think it’s possible that they’ll retain Modrak, as long as he’s willing to play a much lesser role on draftday, because now he’ll basically be irrelevant seeing that it’s Nix and Gailey calling the shots.

Modrak will be staying...
Get over it…
He only played a part in the decisions on draft day. Yes, he was responsible for putting the Bills draft board together, but if you remember an interview last year, he was told to rate the players with team needs in mind. Meaning, a player at a position we needed help, was rated higher because of that need. The choices, especially at the top of the draft, were made by the 3 headed monster of Russ, DJ, and Tom… And DJ held “veto” power….
The success in the later rounds, 3-7, and undrafted players, would attest to the good job Modrak did in player evaluation….
Besides.. Ya don’t “blow up” your scouting department while player evaluations are in full swing… I’m sure Buddy has already notified the whole scouting dept however, that he’s in charge now, and he expects true grades on players with no positional preference….
Let’s be happy with Guy’s dismissal… And watch for his replacement… I get the feeling it’ll be another surprise to Bills fans, but arguably, another good decision by Nix….
I’ve always said that I wouldn’t mind Modrak staying. I still view it as more likely that he goes than he stays.

hopefully they have a plan
Three months before the draft. We have no coaching staff other than the HC. Now, we also need to replace VP of personnel who scouted FAs. Some hefty holes to fill. The beginning of the season, when we fired Schoenert springs to mind. That worked out well!
Don’t get me wrong, it had to be done. But, once again the timing is impeccably Bills. Will Nix take on this role ala Gailey being the offensive play caller? Will Modrak go too?
In typical Bills fashion, they would let Modrak go right before the draft! Although, his past ties with Nix makes that unlikely. I hope they have a plan.

A few Draft issues
DeSean Jackson > James Hardy
DeMarcus Ware > JP Losman…
Jarius Byrd is a rare draft success in recent years…We have had some other nice late round pick ups but we haven’t found a quarterback in the draft and the running back who was supposed to be the future has turned into a criminal. I’m hoping that we can get some better eyes for talent in, starting with Galey who seems to know offensive players. Get Vick, draft OL in 1st round if there is high enough value left at #9 and then work on the DL…
If you remember back the draft where we took hard we were looking for a big reciever. We had a ton of little guys al la DeSean, we needed a big redzone target. Everyone on here would have flipped out big time if we had taken him, including me.
Oh yeah, and i though it was funny you said that “the running back who was supposed to be the future has turned into a criminal…so Get Vick.” Ohhhh the irony.

Vick, haha
I didn’t even think of it that way, but you’re right. I do believe, however, that Vick made one huge mistake and that Marshawn continues to make many terrible mistakes. Vick seems to have turned his life around while Marshawn seemingly wants to keep doing whatever he wants to people.
I do remember the need for a tall receiver, but honestly the Eagles have shown you don’t really need a tall receiver by how they use Jackson, among other threats. Jackson was just one that stuck out to me because I know our front office was really thinking about him, but thought we already had a player like him in Roscoe, who is no DJ by any means. So basically they made a bad rationalle…

Marijuana isn’t necessarily a character issue. It’s what you do when you smoke it that makes it a character issue. Example: Lynch= Pothead, but does dumb sh!t while high. Ricky Williams=pothead, but he’s never done anything else wrong otherwise from smoking it.
Then again, I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder. If Gailey doesn’t want it happening at all (which he should) then he might be weary of bringing in someone who’s been linked to it in the past.

The nay-sayers say what you will, but I’ve watched him play for 4 years and traveled to Gainesville to many games. He has the IT that can’t be measured plus excellent physical skills he will be a Pro QB and a star in the NFL!!!

I love the Tebow talk
I’m a huge fan and would love for the Bills to draft him.
I just don’t get how anything that’s gone on in the past few weeks points to Tebow?
His footwork is beyond awful, his awareness in the pocket is very mediocre, his poise lacks a lot, his arm strength is average, his accuracy has ways to go and QB’s like him very, very rarely have success in the NFL.

Recommendation
Take a look at the Tebow article that was posted a few weeks back.
Some of the statements that you made a off a bit.
When you bet against Tebow, you lose.

As much as I dont want him because of the, footwork, arm motion, non NFL style offense… I want him that much for that reason. The dudes a winner… proves it game in and game out. IDK if he’ll be a good NFL QB someday, but if I had to guess, right now, I would say the guy will be a winner. Almost a “Flutie Style” about him.

He’s a bit Madden-like. He just finds ways to win and dares you to stop what you know is coming. Is he the best QB in the draft? Hardly, but he may be the most all-around dynamic one.

agreed. He isnt the most talented, but the guys got enough heart for every rookie in the draft. Again Im not saying I WANT him in Buffalo, but if we drafted him I dont think I would be too disappointed. And if we do get him then its RT we need in the second round or first, depending on where we would have taken him.
"Be a wuss at home! Be a man on Rumblings!" - Kurupt
That’s right, I forgot. Taking him does mean you need to bolster the right side. The good news: the Bills have fairly large mess on their line, so a shakeup there wouldn’t be reinventing the wheel.

Trust me, I’m going to win this bet. When Tebow never becomes more than a backup QB, you’ll see my point.

Sorry, but all this Tebow talk reminds me of that stupid ass comment Thom Brenneman made last year, and is mocked repeatedly on the Jim Rome show
I hate Tebow all the more for that comment...
I almost pissed myself when I heard Thom say that…

I hope we take tebow, but NOT at #9 and NOT if we have to do the trade into the back end of the first round thing we have become so fond of in recend drafts. If we trade up to get Tebow we all but garentee his falure as an NFL player, and he is too nice of a guy to do that to.
His draft position won't effect his future
His ability to effectively change his throwing motion and ability to read defenses will effect his future.

I’m completely for drafting him and trading for Jason Campbell as a 2-3 stop gap. I think we could get to the playoffs with Campbell, a better D and a strong running game.

So did the Redskins but it was Todd Collins who took them there that one year in the end. The Skins gave him Clinton Portis and a solid D. Still hasn’t worked out.

you won't like this
but with Jax supposedly hot for Tebow, you might see the Bills swapping picks with Jax and getting additional pick(s) for it. Jax is at 11, we’re 9. I believe Jax is 43 in second round. We could get 11, 43 for 9. And, we would have 41 in second. We could still get a solid LT plus additional pick. It all depends on how 1-8 fall. But, I’d take 11, 41, 43 and still have a shot at a QB later.

I would like that as well…
I would take McClain at 11 and then an OT at 41. I love gamechanging LBs.

Great Idea
While I think this is a great Idea, I can’t see anybody taking Tebow at 9 or 11. I don’t see how the Jaquars would be really worried about him going to anybody before us. I feel as though we would most certainly take Clausen before Tebow becuase Clausen is more ready to work in a Pro Style offense. And the Bears certainly won’t take him because they have Cutler. While it would be a great way to add a early 2nd round pick, I don’t see it happening.
by michaelcooksey on Jan 21, 2010 10:52 AM EST up reply actions
Check that, the Broncos are picking in place of the Bears. I still can’t see them taking Tebow there unless they totally go into rebuilding mode. I think the Jags are safe at 11 if they want him that high.

Agred
I was just predicating it on the Tebow talk above, where WE might be the ones taking him. Jax would have to worry about that and we could use it to our advantage. Maybe even draft Tebow and trade him to Jax for additional picks.

Haha. The Bears mortgaged their franchise with Cutler. Haha. I feel better about my favorite team right now.

I rode with Reyes in the elevator at a hotel in Jax when we played them 2 years ago and he was a Jag (dont know if he was this year or not) and that dude is HUUUGE. I thought he would have been better when he came to Buffalo… I was even a little excited about that pick up… buuuut he sucked… so… lol

HELL NO!! haha didnt want a beat down.
Believe me, the thought came to mind though… but it was just us two in the elevator and we kind of BS’d for that 30 second or so ride. It was right after the Collier shooting so we kind of talked about that. Nice guy though. I wish I ran into an actual cool Jag, like MJD or Reggie Nelson or something, but still cool none the less.

THANK YOU!
I’ll compare ESPN to an NFL team that drafts to fit their system. They hire guys only if they fit into their system. Therefore all their guys agree and there is never, ever, any in fighting, or any differing opinions.
It`s not sports reporting, it’ freakin’ propoganda manufacturing. All conceived to please the greater masses.
