I can remember when Marv Levy was named the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills. My initial response was who is this guy? Where did he come from? What is this guy going to do for us? What's his background? Oh Yes, Bill Polian was there and hired Marv. Bill was brought in from Carolina with a short stay with the New York Giants. Bill Polian was a young administrator that rapidly became an NFL hot commodity with his success in Carolina. After the jump lets see if we can compare that time period with what is happening today.
Kicking off our offseason Ralph Wilson announced that Russ Brandon was promoted to CEO and Buddy Nix was being promoted to General Manager of the football operations of the organization. While everyone was looking for the next Bill Polian we got Buddy Nix. After reviewing Buddy's background it turns out that it might not have been a bad choice. The fact that he has been down the hall for the last 10 months also led to speculation that this was predetermined. Conclusion, if Buddy was 20 years younger we probably would have all been excited with the news.
A couple weeks later Buddy annouces that Chan Gailey is being hired to be the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills. Once again we were all expecting the bigger name, bigger splash hire than a Chan Gailey. After exploring Chan's creditials and comparing them to Buddy's criteria in his search things seem to be pointing in the direction that is really best for this team.
Yesterday, the announcement came with the firing of John Guy. We have so much to look forward to with these next announcements but things are beginning to look pretty good. Buddy's press conference layed out what he was going to do and so far he has met his criteria. He may have not met our criteria but he has addressed our teams area's of need.
20 years ago I was younger, dumber and just loved football and the Buffalo Bills. Today I am Older, dumber and still love football and the Buffalo Bills. I am beginning to see a similarity here to the pre Levy/Polian era. I want the big splash real bad but it could be happening right in front of our eyes.
I would like to read some of your thoughts about the pre Levy/Polian days in comparison to the Gailey/Nix era and wonder if you share any similarity with the process that is currently under way. I realize that this may be premature for such a comparison. I mean there is no John Butler (RIP) or A.J. Smith, but Buddy still has time. There is no Ted Marchibroda or Ted Cottrell but there is still time but please throw some thoughts out there on why things shouldn't be similiar to then.
