The apparent myth of our 2009 Defense

Hello,

I was just wondering where people are coming up with the whole notion that our defense was absolutely atrocious this past year. I would just like to point out that while it is well known that we had the 2nd ranked pass defense, many people are under the impression that it is because people never tried to pass against us.

That, as it turns out, is simply not true. We faced 32.4 attempts per game. We actually faced more pass attempts per game than the number one defense, the Jets (who had 31.3), the third best pass defense, Denver (31.9), the and the fourth best pass defense, Carolina (of all teams), who faced 30.9.

As for our run defense, it was pretty bad, but from the few games I saw it was mostly because we weren't able to prevent the big runs. For the most part, while we seemingly never dropped the opponent for a loss, it isn't like they could run it up the gut every play and get 5 yards every time. In fact, most of the longer plays came to the outside if I remember correctly, though that could be my mind just believing what it wants to. I would also like to note that we faced the second highest number of rushes (at 535). When you compare that to even the middle of the pack for defense, say the Cardinals for example, they only faced 402 rushes. That is a rather substantial difference.

I just wanted to get this out of here because there has been a lot of people groaning about our defense lately, and wanted to put this out there.

Cheers folks.

PS. If something goes horribly wrong with this post, I apologize because this is the first post I have ever written, and don't really know what I am doing.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
