The Buffalo Bills will hire Giff Smith, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach at Georgia Tech, as their new OLB coach. Anyone care to guess why we're splitting up our linebacker-coaching duties?

OLB coach?

does this mean we are going to have an ILB coach?

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. - Peter Gibbons

i have no idea lol

But I wonder if this means that were gonna go 3-4. Apparently hes a D line coach at Ga Tech. And a lot of 3-4 OLB’s are 4-3 DE’s.

Makes a lot of sense and Pat Moran seems to think that we’ve already found our new DC, but again I’m never going to predict anything from OBD, because they’re the profound definition of unpredictable.

That’d be a lateral move from Minni, so there’s probably a 0% chance of that.

They either view our ILB’s as uncoachable rubbish, or they think Poz is so wonderful theres nothing left for him to learn ? If I was forced to gues I’d say either the first option os a 3-4 D is on the way ? Makes little sense with no D Co-ordinator though. Unless we have our secret D Co lined up.

Maybe they are on the verge of having the entire coaching staff signed and the only ones that we herd about are the two leaks that have come out so far. For all we know the Bills are planning a press conference in 3 days to present us the entire coaching staff.

Nix has proven to be estremely secretive, so I think that anything is possible at this point.

As new Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey continues to fill out his coaching staff

Did I miss something? Who has been hired officially? The RB coach from AZ? I don’t think that is official. He was also the recruiting coordinator...

it seems as though Chan has continued to stick to at least one of his initial press conference that he is going to hire teachers…if this guy was the recruiting coordinator as well as a defensive positional coach, it stands to reason that he is capable of determining the strengths vs weakness of young players, a prerequisite to being a good teacher is being a good evaluator so that you can determine what needs to be tought.

not sure how spending your career as a college d-line coach is an automatic recommendation to be an NFL LB coach. I guess defense is defense, just a different position. or not. anyway the guy does have a very good record record as d-line coach.

Exactly...

thi doesn’t mean were going to a 3-4, but that is what it points too…he’ll be working with the pass rushing LBs (who must also drop back into coverage), so having a normal DLine coach ala Bob Sanders may have not been ideal. Bob may still be in the plan, but coaching a 4-3 DL and a 3-4 DL are too completely different animals.

Tenuta’s a good DC, but I know that alot of the reasons he’s job hopped around college is he’s an abrasive personality – he’s worn out his welcome very quickly. he also had a reputation of not being a big fan of recruiting and some of the mundane elements of coaching in college. I’m kinda surprised he’s never ended up in the pros, but at the same time, his got kind of a dour demeanor, and if Chan is all about “teaching” guys, I’m gonna say he’s probably not the best fit.

I would say George Catavolos

I doubt he stays on…….much like what happened to him over in GB.

the 3-4 doesnt have much effect on the DB’s……so thats why I went with him.(Catavolos)…….he seems the most logical in my opinion

Bottome line?

We do not know who or what this guy brings to the table, good or bad. It is frustrating to think that we will have rookie coaches trying to teach our players to win. However, optimism is key here. Everyone needs a start. I like the fact that we are putting in the effort to stabilize the offense with a solid offensive mind. The Defense needs teachers at this point and maybe new faces and new ideas will bring life to this team who has been drown in the DJ Era with a ho-hum attitude. DJ was famous for “well we are playing hard” and what did that get us? And they do play hard and they are young and the players need direction. Let’s get them direction!

We will know all the pieces to the puzzle shortly but please lets get some teachers in here to improve our players. Playing hard is not enough. If Giff can do that then what do we have to lose?

by MikeEverett08 on Jan 26, 2010 7:14 PM EST reply actions

If the guy is young with little to no coaching experience we get this. If he is older and a veteran of the coaching ranks, we get all that too old stuff. I give up I really do.

Bills to Fans: Shutup and pay.

The folks at OBD continue to treat the fans – and media – with disdain, taking advantage of their enthusiasm and willingness to pay for an inferior product. Why change the current business plan when there is no incentive to do so? The team turns a solid profit. The Wilson family and the Bills execs line their pockets with working class dough. While the Toronto windfall and revenue sharing only add to their profits. Why spend that money on the field, pay for a quality GM, quality coaches, or an NFL level scouting department when the stadium is being filled already? Until Littman’s ledger starts to tip, as Ralph said, luck will be our best hope. Time to organize, Bills fans.

Can I Ask Questions?

Can this be worse than the last 4 years?

With 3 Key additions as far as talent goes and some better (Winning attitude) coaching is this team far from the playoffs?

Lighten up folks....

All this questioning, etc will get ya nothing but drunk… or worse…
We, the fans, have gotten a little “leaked” info in regards to a couple maybes….
Didn’t ya get enough of the guessing and speculation during the HC hiring?
IF!!!! This proves to be true, doncha think, maybe, just maybe, we already have our DC, and are just putting more parts of his staff together before announcing it?? And maybe, just maybe, ah….. heck with it…. Go ahead… Be miserable…
But remember… Our new GM does seem to have a flair for dramatics, and none for speculation…. And I happen to like that about him….

Any Biff will do

I’m hoping we hire Biff Henderson from Letterman’s staff. He’s got a lot of experience… wearing a headset. =P

signings

If we can’t sign coaches quickly what’s going to happen with out draft picks? How many days has it been since Chan has been hired? Yet we have no official coaches announced just rumors.

“If we can’t sign coaches quickly what’s going to happen with out draft picks?”
Um…. they will sign because they don’t have a choice about where they go.

“How many days has it been since Chan has been hired?”
Sevenish.

“Yet we have no official coaches announced just rumors.”
Yes. The Seahawks know their assistants largely because Pete Carroll brought them from USC. The Bears are on day 21 without a DC and OC.

“announced” is the key i think they will assemble the whole staff before they release the information. i mean it was “announced” that Modkins was the new OC a few days ago and nothing official yet on him.

So since Pees is the LB coach for the Ravens,

does that mean he wasn’t interested in being the DC for the Bills or was never on their radar?

Let's be logical here...

Everyone’s first reaction is like WTH and who the H is this guy? I admit, my first reaction was something like that too.

BUT…

consider the logical reasons for this “hire” if it ends up being “officially annouced” at some point:

1) College guys need to make a change quickly, particularly “recruiting coordinators” so that positions can be back-filled and recruits are not lost. Notice the article talks about top recruits not changing their minds. So his hiring was probably done weeks ago.

2) If the hiring was done weeks ago (or just recently) look at the guy’s title “OLB Coach”. Maybe the top staffs in the NFL has an OLB coach, but don’t be fooled with the title. I am sure Chan just called him “something” to give the guy a job title and a pay range. I like in the article that it showed his $189K salary. Nice jack for a college job. I am sure he will get more for the OLB position. So why hire him in that role? Probably because he is one of those guys, that is a must hire for any organization. I am going to assume that as a recruiting coordinator, the guy is good at assessing talent and a great “recruiter” for building a culture or attitude for our team. Who knows if he can coach a position well. My guess is the guy is a great “up and coming coach” that Chan respected and wanted, so he titled him something. It was probably disappointing that it was “leaked” and it adds to the “PR” mess they have been dealing with at OBD for the past 18 months.

3) This is only a “guess” or speculation on my behalf, but if the Bills don’t announce a DC hire tomorrow or the next day, my guess is that they have their DC coach targeted on one of the Superbowl team’s staffs. Look at Indy: How about Mike Murphy LB’s coach for 12 years, or D-Line Coach Bill Teerlinck or DBs coach Alan Williams both of whom have been with them in their positions for 8-years?

I could see Nix or Gailey look at a Murphy and say, “that’s our guy” however, they can’t touch him until they are done with the SB.

Anyway… good we have Giff if he is a targeted guy to bring in. We’ll see what the next few days at the Sr. Bowl tell us. If no DC announced. Look at Murphy or someone like him.

seriously doubt that Nix will be making any announcements from Alabama.

Agreed, no "announcement" is going to be made in AL. However...

This is the “hotbed” for coaching changes for “lower level” hires and staff moves. Consider that Chan and Buddy are probably putting in extra time with talking to coaches, agents, GM’s, etc.

“Official Announcements” will certainly be made after the Sr. Bowl. However if they were going to be hiring a DC to join them in AL, I would assume the announcement would be made or would have been made already… hence why I think the Murphy or other coaches on one of the SB teams is a logical consideration.

i’d imagine the new DC is probably already at the senior bowl, as is most everyone involved in NFL coaching/ recruiting (other than some SB coaches)

To summarize

the news is reportedly a leak from georgia tech

what does that mean? That the bills didn’t intend to announce it. What does that mean? That they probably didn’t hire an OLB coach before a coordinator. The DC probably just works somewhere that can keep his mouth shut.

To me the only news of note here is that signs point to us running the 3-4 next year. I like that. Not because I favor the 3-4 over the 4-3 (which I do, incidentally) but because it’s the first time I’ve seen this franchise NOT take the path of least resistance in a long time. It means that Buddy and Chan aren’t looking for ways to not embarrass themselves next year. They’re willing to look bad for a year because they think that’s in the best longterm interest of the team. That’s a good sign. In fact, it might be the best sign I’ve seen all offseason.

...so I guess now I root for chan gailey...

Don’t get married to anything. It could all change with an official announcement from OBD.

But good summary. I agree that if they plan on making a change for improvement’s sake, they shouldn’t let next year be the basis for huge decisions.

That’s why I’m in such a weird place, emotionally, right now. New GM with a good track record: check. New HC with a good resume on offense instead of defense: check. Coach up the RBs, namely Lynch: check. Switch to a 3-4: check.

It’s almost getting freaky. The abundance of Georgia Tech coaches on staff ( if true ), is a little alarming though.

It means when he called the guys he recruited to tell them, those guys talked to the media.

The Bears have been without a DC and OC for three weeks now. “OMG WE HAVEN”T HIRED ANYONE YET" is a little premature.
