Report: DeHaven returns to Buffalo as special teams coordinator

John Murphy at WIVB.com is reporting that former Buffalo Bills special teams coordinator Bruce DeHaven will return to Buffalo in the same capacity under new head coach Chan Gailey. The report says that the announcement is expected to take place next week.

DeHaven, 61, was the Bills' special teams coordinator from 1987 through 1999, a time frame in which the Bills made four straight appearances in the Super Bowl; he lost his job after the famed Music City Miracle. Since then, DeHaven has coached special teams in San Francisco, Dallas and most recently Seattle. Ten years after Buffalo jettisoned him, however, DeHaven is on his way back.

DeHaven has 23 years of coaching experience at the NFL level.

Buffalo is still several coaches short of a complete staff, with the most glaring vacancy at defensive coordinator. DeHaven's arrival, however, eliminates the vacancy at one of the most critical spots on any coaching staff.

goof hire

for awhile, during the golden years of 88-95, we did have a great special teams unit, in terms of kicking and punting, so I say it is a welcome sight… Go Bills! Now maybe they can bring back the Jaws theme to kickoffs

Still waiting for the playoffs.... Go Bills 2010 !!!!

I hope that doesn't turn out to be true...

Not just kicking and punting, but coverage as well. Let’s not forget he coached Steve Tasker and Mark Pike.

Good move. Glad to see the bridge with him was repaired after the Music City (not a)-Miracle …

Good hire. Not surprising in the least. He was the only name I was looking for to fill this spot.

was he the guy the bills ran that fake fg on?

seattles special teams were ranked 15th in '08 & '09 but 2 or 3 in '07

I suspect the problem may be more of a talent deficit than coaching. ST talent is not an issue here.

Weird. Wasn’t DeHaven the guy Ralph wanted fired, but Wade refused, so Wade wasn’t rehired? I’m sure any meetings between Bruce and Ralph won’t be awkward at all.

Bill Polian and AJ Smith are gone, so there's not the usual balance between "sane" and "others." Ralph has mentally checked out since 1994. It's a very dangerous time. The coalition for reason is extremely weak.

by thatguy34 on Jan 29, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions

Wrong coach

Nope Phillips fired him after the Tennessee game. He then hired his buddy Ronnie Jones to run the special teams. And then the special teams became bad. After the season Ralph wanted Jones gone and wade refused in so getting fired.

by mjflair on Jan 29, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Ronnie Jones.

That was the guy he replaced with Bruce DeHaven, that the following year Wade refused to fire so Wilson obliged.

IIRC, Ronnie was the guy who employed CB Chris Watson as the “punt catcher”.

Ah, good times.

bad hire

remember marv levy was a special teams guy before he became our head coach…also silverstreak is correct we humiliated this guy with a fake fg…not that bobby april was clearly a better sp coach….also on a slight tangent…sp coach is overrated…

by the buffahoe on Jan 29, 2010 2:59 PM EST reply actions

clarification

what i meant to say was this guy should not get all the credit for being a good sp coach with us back in the glory days…marv’s probably had a lot to do with that…

by the buffahoe on Jan 29, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Huh?

Almost 1/5 of all snaps in a game are on Special Teams in some capacity…are you willing say that those snaps and the resuklts from those plays are overrated? The TD to Denney was overrated…the fumble by Leo was over-rated?

by NorCal BillsFan on Jan 29, 2010 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Was sorry to see him leave Buffalo before.

Glad to see him back in Bills country!

In the same class as Bobby April, IMO.

Get the Bills back to the big game!

meh

Welcome back? I don’t know. He was an allright coordinator over a decade ago here, but hasn’t had much success since the glory years. I think there’s some legitimacy to that…

I suppose we can expect solid coverage units and below average return units. Oh well, couldn’t expect much more than this hire…

Do you think it’s because the personnel guys and HC didn’t value special teams? Will Gailey?

by MattRichWarren on Jan 29, 2010 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Good hire

I Like it. After he left Buffalo he worked for Bill Parcells, MIke Holmgrem. So on his resume you have Levy. Parcells and Holmgrem not bad at all. Plus I liked April but lets not forget he let go more than once in his career. In the end it comes down to what the head coach gives you. How many players does he keep just for special teams purposes. The last head coach kept a lot of these type of players. If Gailey does too the teams will be fine.

by mjflair on Jan 29, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions

I am looking forward to see who they hire

as the strength and conditioning coach. Nix identified the rash of injuries as a big problem to fix, very early in his first press conference. I am very anxious to see how they address the strenght and conditioning coach.

We cannot win football games when everyone is on IR, we are already low on talent that the talent we do have must be on the field.

i don't buy into this

i don’t think you can blame the S&C coach on all of the injuries. look at some of the specific injuries and tell me how a better S&C coach would have made a diff.

Wood’s leg? Poz’s arm? Edwards concussions? McKelvin’s Leg?

I know it’s two years in a row with an absolute RASH of injuries, but I really think we’ve had a bad deal of luck there too.

Is Tasker Coming Back?

Because he was a BIG reason why DeHaven had success here in his last go-round. Our return teams during those years were anything but spectacular. If memory serves we had quite a few stretches without anyone breaking one.

12 Great Years, vs. One horrible play

Okay, seriously, why did he get fired again? One play, that in my opinion would’ve been avoided entirely if Flutie was starting that game?

Seriously, I would’ve been on here giving Wade Phillips, or Ralph Wilson if the rumors are true and Ralph made Wade start Rob, SO much crap if … here had existed, and I’d had a functioning computer, back then, but the Immaculate Deception? (As I will call it to my dying day, because I KNOW that Dyson was a half-yard forward of Wycheck when that throw happened, no matter what the damn cameras say…) Was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. (Even if it did set up a ‘nice’ moment in World Championship Wrestling the next Monday, when Jeff Jarrett, known denizen of Nashville wrestling, was wearing his real-life friend Frank Wycheck’s jersey, in the HSBC Arena — in Buffalo, natch — and amazingly he got out of the arena alive!)

I was at that game..............

… and through my Bill-goggles, it was clearly obvious it was a forward pass. I was sooooo pissed off that day. But, leading up to the game, I was even more mad that Wade benched
Dougie in favor of Rob Johnson. I got tickets here in Nashville, and then Elmer Fudd benched Flutie, and my wife was so mad that she refused to go to the game. I had to take a friend.
I guess she is smarter than me.
That’s why I love her.
