Every day I'm able to watch Pardon the Interruption on ESPN thanks to a wonderful thing they call DVR. Also thanks to this thing called DVR I am able to provide for you an exact transcript of the five good minutes segment with Peter King and his bit where he discusses the Bills coaching position. I thought it was worth sharing because many have asked why "big name" and even coordinator coaching candidates have seemingly steered clear of the Bills, despite their being few other options. Peter King appeared to share his answer to this question and its either absurdity or scary truth are worth debating.
Michael Wilbon: What about Buffalo? We've heard the name Bill Cowher, we've heard the name Brian Billick, we've heard the name Marty Schottenheimer, who's name do you hear?
Peter King: Well I don't think its going to be any one of those three guys because I don't think it's gonna be a big star. This is a job that's gotten a little devalued quite frankly. I've had one candidate say that he wasn't real crazy, and a candidate who's on some people's lists, said he wasn't real crazy about the moves they've made in the off-season, most notably the general manager 70 year old Buddy Nix. So, I think that they will go, that they will fly below the marquee guys. Brian Billick is definitely not involved. And I think they will probably end up with a coordinator, maybe, somebody like Brian Schottenheimer the Jets offensive coordinator.
Now, this is a pretty intense statement from Peter King. Three things of importance.
1.) He claims, quite forcefully, that the Bills job has been devalued by the hiring of Buddy Nix. This is the first I've heard of anything related to Nix and the attractiveness of the job in Buffalo.
2.) This seems like the whole John McCain is too old bit from the election when he casually drops Nix's age when pointing out his apparent unattractiveness. I don't know when being 70 was too old but apparently Nix's age is a factor for some candidates according to King.
3.) Peter King either really knows someone close to Billick or is being careless but saying that Billick is "definitely not involved" is a pretty strong statement.
4.) Brian Schottenheimer was the one name he dropped for guys he expects to be serious candidates.
There you have it, folks. Discuss away but please steer clear of "Peter King is an idiot" comments. We've all heard them before. I think his statement from two days ago is worth sorting out here at Rumblings.
