Andrew Luck-Go Back to School!

So this is my first post and I had no idea how to start it even though I sat for ten minutes thinking so just pretend that this sentence doesn't exist and instead imagine that some witty and engaging introduction was here. Sorry. Anyways, this post is about why I would like Andrew Luck to go back to Stanford and not declare for the draft this year. The following is contingent upon the Bills having the first overall pick in next year's draft.

  • First of all, I would rather the Bills pick Jake Locker next year over Andrew Luck, whether Luck comes out or not (I am not going to get into why, as I'm trying not to make this a post entirely about Luck vs Locker, but The Buffalo Kid wrote a nice piece on it earlier this week). I figure that if Andrew Luck goes back to school next year, we won't have to fret about the Bills choosing Luck over Locker (or vice versa if you want Luck). And hopefully they wouldn't take Ponder over Locker, because I really do not want Ponder. This way, the Bills would be guaranteed to take Locker, sign him before the draft even starts, and there will be no worrying.
  • Second, if Luck comes out, and both he and Locker are drafted high, they will always be compared to each other. Rather than being able to develop at his own pace, whoever the Bills choose will be expected to perform as well as the other since he was chosen higher. Even if he performs capably, if the other is an instant superstar, the Bills choice will always have that and the public scrutiny involved hanging over his head. This one is also for selfish reasons because I can't stand the Whitner vs Ngata, Maybin vs Orakpo vs Oher vs Matthews vs Cushing vs everyone else taken in that draft stuff. It would be so much worse with the number one pick and it being a quarterback.
  • Third, I assume that, even though the Bills will have chosen Jake Locker and it will have been a new season, the Bills probably won't do so hot again in 2011 and in the 2012 draft the Bills will probably be drafting in the top five again. Along with that assumption is the assumption that probably one of the teams ahead of us will be drafting a quarterback, which is why they are also drafting in the top five. If Andrew Luck goes back, he is that quarterback being chosen and the Bills essentially get a better selection of players to choose from. Or, Andrew Luck going back to school = better player the Bills can take in 2012.
  • Fourth, part of me doesn't want the Bills to take a quarterback in 2011, which I think is more out of my own cowardice and fear that if the quarterback taken doesn't work out, the Bills are doomed forever. Along with this thought is that if Andrew Luck goes back to school, and the Bills draft A.J. Green, then this Bills offense could be downright explosive with Luck, Spiller, Green, any players that develop/are drafted in that time (Easley), and Parrish and Evans if they are still with the team and still are good.
