I am not a big Sullivan fan

He tries too hard to stir the pot…

Sullivan wrote:

Or why didn’t they trade Lynch in the summer? Surely he could have fetched a fourth-rounder back then. What did they gain by keeping Lynch this long? Was it worth insulting Fred Jackson and impeding C.J. Spiller’s development?
As always the media is trying to make something out of nothing. The reality is that Gailey knew he needed his run game to have a chance at winning games this year, depth is a good thing. Had we won a few and still be in contention, not sure Lynch would have been traded but then again maybe i’m wrong. One thing is certain, having three healthy backs made sense if all they were getting was a 4th. By playing him and if some team gets plagued with injuries maybe the value goes up by the trade deadline. For all intents and purposes, Green bay would have been wise to send their 3rd our way but they were stubborn and now they can live with their decision. At this point Nix is getting what he can and given that we are basically out of it for this year, depth is no longer required and the strategy now should be to get Spiller lots of playing time.

i disagree. 3-back systems rarely ever work. most good starting running backs (like lynch and jackson) need to develop rhythm and wear down defenses, something they can’t do when splitting reps. and by having both of those guys, you’re keeping your sparkley new gamechanging first round pick from getting reps.

Honestly, i might not agree with the way he said it, but i agree with the fact that nothing good came of keeping all three through the beginning of the season.

by quantumuprising on Oct 7, 2010 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t talk about a 3-back system. I spoke of Depth at the RB position.

The point here being that Lynch’s value was a 5th at best before the season maybe a 4th and by playing him his value might have increased. Keeping 3 backs for depth when you know that the focus of your team is to pound the ball is not a bad strategy to start the season, with the clear understanding that Lynch’s value had a very good chance at increasing closer to the Oct trade deadline (depending on other team situations)

You could argue that it was a risk to take because Lynch could have got into trouble and we could have lost the chance at a 4th but I suspect that Gailey had a talk with him. You also could argue that Lynch was taking a spot on the 53-man roster. But to argue that you are somehow insulting Jackson, c’mon. These guys are pros and now that Lynch is gone Jackson will rise to the challenge. Where some people see knee jerk reaction, I see a solid plan to start the season.

Sully’s argument is that we should have traded him before the season ‘cause now we might have offended Jackson? That’s ridiculous and we would not have gotten anything better, this way we had a chance at improving the trade offering. Furthermore, had we traded him and then Spiller or Jackson gotten hurt, then everyone would have screamed incompetence!! The approach that Nix took was the smartest.

I spoke of Depth at the RB position.

Then you’d be speaking incorrectly. Jackson, lynch, and spiller were not rb ‘depth.’ All three could function as starters. As illustrated by brian’s stats in some other thread, they each saw 30 something percent of snaps, which is dang close to a perfectly portioned 3 back system. Running back depth is keeping a guy like joique bell who can perform if someone else gets injured.

Yeah, it’s not like the Jags are going to need a gameplan to stop the Colts or Saints. Oh wait. They already did beat the Colts. Ugh.

Sullivan

This made me LOL : "When he got the job, Nix said he’s never been the smartest man in the room. Still, it would be nice to get him in the room once in awhile to confirm it. "

Nothing that Sullivan wrote was off base or trying to to stir the pot. He is correct. Where is NIx? Why hasn’t he answered any questions? Why hasn’t he given the fans a real reason why a 31 year old DE turned LB got a $24 mill extension? I’m sorry, but Jerry’s article was dead on accurate .

Jerry’s not a reporter. He writes opinion pieces. You ought to get that through your head before you start taking shots at fellow Bills fans.

maybe he is

but maybe it only takes a third rate reporter/journalist to be pretty spot on with his evaluations of this team and mishandled organization. It hurts, but the truth.. you know, sux sometimes

I do believe Nix owes the fans some "information" on the state of the Bills

and all the moves that are being made. We’ve gotten to the point of “which starter will be gone next week?” as an expected norm with our team.

State Of The Bills

That would seem pretty obvious at this point wouldn’t it? I don’t think its a league rule that each GM has to keep fanbase informed on FO every thought and move. Watch them on Sunday, you’ll get a good idea were the Bills are!

Why? So he can destroy his negotiating position with every other team? He doesn’t need to give this rationale when he is still in the middle of trying to make deals.

Explanations...

don’t make you any better come Sunday. I could care less about how much face-time Nix gives the media as long as he turns this roster and brings in a winning QB and some adequate pass protection. Pass rush wouldn’t hurt either.

Besides, how specific can he be without tipping his hand? He can’t be, so he’ll do what every other GM and coach do… speak in general terms and clichés.

Nothing Sullivan wrote is “false,” but he’s asking questions we’ve all been discussing on this site for months… why not do [this] and [when?] And if you ask me those questions have obvious answers that fans are unwilling to accept because they are skeptical and jaded (without fault.)

It’s not a position I envy. I mean, I would love to have his job, but if I was in the middle of this process and there isn’t anything I could do to fix it overnight I would probably be out-of-sight working on the problem, not making every opportunity to make excuses which is what Sullivan is clamouring for apparently.

It is what it is folks. But that’s not GM speak.

My opinion...

and I don’t know how this post got to be about Jerry Sullivan but personally I don’t like his articles, and that’s my opinion. It’s not what he writes but it’s the tone in his message or delivery. Yes, Ralph provided a great deal of material for the guy to write about over the years, and some of it was deserved, but some of his comments or opinions are personal and below the belt which I feel is unprofessional.

“When he got the job, Nix said he’s never been the smartest man in the room. Still, it would be nice to get him in the room once in awhile to confirm it. "

I feel that comment was mean spirited and counterproductive. I have no problem with bringing out the problems with the team but its also how you go about doing it.

Now, there was something else that caught my eye in the links that no one’s talking about….signing of a D-lineman to the practice squad. That’s the 2nd lineman signed to the practice squad ( 1offense -1 defense and their both big guys). Anyone have any further info on him besides what was listed?
