Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

Greetings from Detroit!

Nobody else has done one of these yet from our side, so what the heck.

Star-divide

After a rough game at home against the Jets, the guys in my uniforms of choice are taking on the guys in your preferred uniforms of choice.  Let's have a nice dialogue about our teams, our concerns, and the obvious topics of conflict like who will win and whether or not your organization will join ours in an 0-16 season.

As for me, I was hoping the Bills would pull it out against Chicago so the Lions don't have the chance to, for the second year in a row, potentially give a 1-15 team their only victory.  With Shaun Hill starting for us over Drew Stanton, I still think my Lions have the better team and should win in a high-scoring game.  That said, I don't think this Bills team is bad enough to go 0-16 just from seeing bits and pieces of the tough games against Baltimore and Kansas City.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Thanks for reaching out Jamesir,

You’ve come to the right forum for constructive thoughts rather than seething and corrupt attitudes.

Something tells me that there is a fire burning in every player on our team. It is an intangible element of sports that can only be measured at game time. Your Lions may be the victims of that fire, or so is my hope. While you see a close and high scoring game, I prefer to be blinded by those unidentifiable aspects of human nature. I expect the first, and perhaps only blow-out of the season ending in a Bills victory.

Though I realize that I may not have my wish granted, it is still my hope that Buffalo turns around on a dime and prove the nay sayers wrong.

I would wish you luck… but you see, I can’t do that. Anyhow it’s “Luck” that many of my fellow Bills fans seem to be holding out for.

I respectfully hope you lose against us…. and lose embarrassingly. Sorry sir.

I think I understand what you mean about a fire burning in your players. We had that too, going into the Jets game, pretty much until everything fell apart. The tell in this game is going to be how the Lions respond. Further, we’re yet to be blown out this season and the only time we’ve lost by more than a score was against the Vikings (fumbled punt return, critical turnovers in our favor called back on questionable penalties). Detroit can lose to Buffalo, but a blowout is very unlikely unless the Lions play flat after all the bad news following a gut-punch loss.

The only luck I wish you guys is…

The lions are not who we think they are.

I expect a similiar game to the ones we have had recently. I expect the lions to be very physical on both sides of the ball. I have no reason to think that the game won’t be close, but who knows. We have yet to protect the home field let alone maintain leads or come back in the fourth. We have gotten a little better during the 3rd quarter which is encouraging and we did slow down the Bears running game as recent as last week. Yet I still wouldn’t dare wager on this game. The lions are a few notches ahead on the learning curve than our Bills. You are playing your #2 QB, many here were interested in him during the off season. We are starting our fourth RT. Still we have been playing each team close to the vest and have not been able to slip that dagger in the right direction when we need it. When you start missing extra points, you have to wonder what next can happen.

This one is fairly tough to predict. A few talking heads are calling for this to be the Bills first win of the season, and after losing Stafford (again) and suffering a disaster loss against a team we outplayed (again), it’s really not too far out on a limb.

Although I guess it is difficult to be objective, I believe the Lions offense will give Buffalo fits if Shaun Hill doesn’t have too much rust and Drew Stanton stays on the sidelines. Jahvid Best has been recovering from his turf toe and Buffalo’s run defense has been bad. Is there any reason for their run D to be improved? I ask because, for us, we were missing our middle linebacker and our second string middle linebacker for most of the season which put us far behind the 8-ball in run defense. Losing one of our starting outside linebackers to IR in Week 6 didn’t help much either.

by Jamesir Bensonmum on Nov 11, 2010 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

Our run defense is only one major weakness on our Defense

As we have talked about since last sunday is the effort our defense put out Vs the Bears run game. We weren’t sure if it was the lack of effort on the Bears offensive line and running backs or if it was an adjustment on our D.

That being said, we have not been able to sustain any pressure on the QB to make a difference and when the opponents QB has time to throw our CB’s and Safety’s can’t catch the ball when it hits them in the hands. So until we can repeat our run defense effort Vs the Bears I believe it is safe to say it is still a weakness.

I really hate replying to myself, it happens to much here.

But, we also can’t defend the Tight End in the passing game. Almost as bad as defending the run. So I am not taking this game lightly at all.

The Bears o-line is really bad and their run game, with Martz as their offensive coordinator, is an afterthought. That said—our run defense got burned on a big play or two off of Forte.

From what I’d heard, Olsen didn’t do much against you guys and that TD pass wasn’t even intended for him.

Too bad you guys couldn’t knock Cutler around…

Hills favorite weapons are the TEs and the RB coming out of the backfield

When he was starting, with Grew, Shef and best playing, they received the Lions share (yes pun intended) of his attention and more often than not made great plays. Grew can drop a pass now and then but it seems to have dropped off a bit these last couple games.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

Lions and Bills, Oh My!

Jamesir,

No offense, but I hope you have a disappointing Sunday. I have been impressed with this years edition of the lions, and I believe they are further up the road to respectability than the Bills are. You already have a franchise QB and defensive lineman. At this point you only need a couple role players and maturity as a squad. The Bills can beat the Lions, but will have to play all out to do so. One things for certain, both teams see this as a “winnable” game. This will be a very competitive hard fought game that will see saw back and forth. I believe whoever has last possession will win this one!

We’re definitely close, as a franchise, to being less of every talking head’s go-to punching bag. That said, Stafford’s most recent injury is another roadblock the team really does not need. If you asked me an hour before the Jets-Lions game who was going to win this matchup, I’d have said Lions by a wide margin. Now, not so much.

If we do lose to you guys, I am no longer using the Bills throwback AFL uniforms with my Madden Ultimate Team.

by Jamesir Bensonmum on Nov 11, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

I have a question.

That’s been burning my mind. I see a lot of analysts predicting Bills victory.

But the only reason WHY is always essentially, “Well, the Bills have to win sometime, right?”

But, I want to ask Buffalo Rumblings… Why will the Bills win? Not just because this is perceived as the easiest game on the rest of their schedule. What will make you win?

And I’m not buying into the three close games by 3, and being “due for a win”. You have that, but you also have a -83 point differential on the season, you’ve been blown out at least two times.

Nothing incendiary, I’m just wondering… Why?

by Mavyrk on Nov 11, 2010 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Because...

…. to lose dilutes the value of those three close games against upper tier teams. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Lions are a mere step away from becoming an upper tier team, but their record sends a different message to the rest of the football watching world. If Buffalo loses to a “perceived” weak team, then all other games that they’ve been in to the end will be pushed off as merely flukes.

The Bills know this and will do everything in their power to ensure that doesn’t happen.

I’m a Bills fan… therefore I am blinded by faith in my team. So if they prove me wrong this weekend, so be it. But I’ll continue to make these bold statements each and every week. Someday I might look like a prophet, who knows.

GO BILLS!!!

Alright fair enough.

I was just complaining a tad about the lack of overall coverage of this game. Whenever week 10 picks are discussed, the arguments are specious and reduced to like “well, after losing three close games, the Bills are hungry so they’ll win.”

I can get that. I mean, I’m a Lion’s fan, so I understand those sentiments entirely, I’ve been doing it for like 15 years. I just wanted to know if the Bills fanbase knows something I don’t in terms of this matchup that’s causing so much confidence.

by Mavyrk on Nov 11, 2010 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

I think the confidence comes from three places

1) The Bills have played 3 straight very competitive games against quality opponents
2) The Lions are the first team with a losing record that the Bills have faced this year. Even if the Lions are better than their 2-6 record would indicate (which I firmly believe), they still rank at or near the bottom of the Bills opponents to date this season.
3) Matt Stafford is out

I don’t think any Bills fans want to take anything away from the Lions, they are clearly further along in the rebuild than Buffalo. I think the excitement is certainly there though, as without Stafford this is probably the first time this year we start the game on similar ground to our opponent talent wise (as much as we can say that about this roster).

by Stephen Schmidt on Nov 11, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Not to be pessimistic...

but I don’t see the Bills winning this game. The only way that happens (& I do not wih this on anybody) is if the plane carrying the Lions team to Orchard Park goes down in flames. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.
Sad to say, but I think the Bills are on the road to matching the Lions 0-16 record from 2 years ago. I don’t see any wins in the remaining schedule. Any teams I previously thought were possible wins are just plain better than the Bills are right now. Steve Johnson has been the one lone bright spot on this team this year.

Good question

You guys have fared well against more talented teams and Buffalo being favored is actually an insult to your team. Being a Buffalo fan, i see it as “the kiss of death” for us. I have no insights as to why we are favored over the Lions. Perhaps the “experts” feel our teams slow improvements and playing at home, coupled with your injuries at QB will translate into a win for us. However, now that Hill is probable for the game I think the Lions have a good chance of winning.

We're used to being insulted.

It’s easy for talking heads to take jabs at the Lions without even taking the time to look beyond win-loss records, which often is still too much trouble for them.

“The Buffalo Bills are playing the (paused for laughter) Detroit Lions, or should we say THE DETROIT KITTIES!”
“Yeah Bob, everyone has been taming those Lions this year!”
more laughter
“Ya know, Neil, the city of Detroit really needs a winner. But this Lions team just isn’t it.”
“Right Bob. Bills get their first win of the season against the worst team in the history of organized sports, 142-3, and then apologize to the NFL for being so bad and promise to never play a Thanksgiving game ever again.”
“And thank god for that, Neil!”

I think the Bills will win because I think the Lions defense is exploitable in the air. Chan Gailey came into this locker room and inherited a team that everyone thought had a chance to be one of the historically worst offenses in the history of the league. Instead he turned Ryan Fitzpatrick into a name worth mentioning as a starter in Buffalo beyond this year, turned Roscoe Parrish into one of the more dangerous slot men in the AFC, got Steve Johnson to emerge as a star, fed the ball to veteran Lee Evans, made us proficient at marching down the field on long drives, and has made us the second best team in the redzone in the entire league. All without a semblance of an offensive line. Losing Roscoe Parrish hurts but his role should be filled by David Nelson, who has also made a name for himself as a reliable target under Gailey. Gailey has also shown that he is going to pass more than he is going to run, something which I think will work against the Lions. While your defensive line is darn impressive Gailey has perfected quick drops and releases and Fitzpatrick makes his bacon scrambling and moving away from pressure and immediately identifying who is open on a drop back. I honestly believe Buffalo will open up an effective passing attack against your coverage.

In combination with…

Our secondary has shown in the past it is capable of taking advantage of lame duck throws, Stanton not starting eases that worry for you guys a bit though Shaun Hill can be mistake prone. The Bills were also effective at blitzing and getting pressure against a poor Chicago offensive line. I think your offensive line is exploitable in this matchup as well.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I think this game will be about which team can hang more points on which defense. Prior to Matthew Stafford falling on his shoulder again, I believed that the Lions had the advantage to win this game as Stafford would move you down the field and find your weapons with ease. With Drew Stanton penciled in as the starter I figued it was over, the Bills were going to win. With Shaun Hill now the starter its somewhere in the middle, a lot of it depends on how Hill plays and how the Bills defense can force him into errors. Perhaps even more important, a lot depends on whether or not the Lions offense can suck it up and commit to running the ball. If you run a lot, you should win. If you try and keep up with Fitzpatrick and Gailey by taking it to the air I think you play into our hands. The Chiefs did so to their own detriment and it wasnt until overtime that they just started pounding the rock to take the win. A lot depends on the coaches here.

by poz on Nov 11, 2010 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

The notion that Detroit’s D is exploitable in the air is a bit of a misnomer. We are only allowing 233 yards per game for the season. That is not stellar but it is far from horrible and has steadily improved as the season has worn on, along with the addition of Smith as our other CB, this secondary is dangerous. It is definitely not a strength of the team but it is no longer a liability that will lose us games anymore.

Our offensive line is badly underrated. We are number two in the league in pass attempts per game but have only allowed 14 sacks all season (6th in the league). This offensive line is stellar in pass protection. Their run blocking is miserable but with the weapons this team has, running the ball is more of an after thought anyhow.

Do not write off Hill either. Like it or not, hill and Fitz are just about a wash statistically.

I can see this game coming down to the battle in the trenches and I think Detroit has a clear edge in that area on both sides of the ball.

No matter what, I hope for a great game. No injuries for either team! Go Lions.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

Believe me, with our teams unfortunate luck with injuries i’ll be crossing my fingers for both teams to get out of here healthy!

The addition of Sims at left guard

has made a huge difference across the whole line. Odd how one piece that fits right can make such a difference. If our O line is exploitable it is at RG with Peterman, who is suffering threw injuries.

If it comes down to the battle in the trenches we are going to be in trouble. Im considered somewhat of an optimistic around here (though I really dont think i am hhaha) but I am very down on this teams offensive line. Our offensive tackles are very very exploitable.

What gives me hope is that you say your run blocking is miserable. That gives us some hope. Paul Posluszny and Kyle Williams are playing exceptional football this season and a real poor run blocking effort could really help us try and stem your running game.

If we manage any sort of running game this Sunday

It will be your team allowing it much more than our team making it happen.

Funny, you are considered an optimist here. I am considered a pessimist on our site.

I am really seeing two teams that are close in many ways with one exception that stands out (Warning, possible homer alert). Our D line is flat out nasty. From end to end there are players who can make things happen. Then you have Suh and Williams in the middle. Two absolute beasts. I tell you. If Suh was not playing next to him, Williams would be getting a ton of attention. He is a disruptive force in the middle. Those two are a match up nightmare for any blocking scheme.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

It isn't homerism that our defensive line is really, really good.

Sometimes I find myself getting wrapped up in thinking our defense is better than it is, but our d-line has legitimately been just a few ticks below elite level.

by Jamesir Bensonmum on Nov 12, 2010 8:48 AM EST up reply actions

Ok, well you see

1) Like a lot of good teams who play supposed “bad teams”, they let up on the gas when they have to and press down when they have to. Losing close doesn’t really count for your team. it just doesn’t count against it.

2)The losing record is deceiving for a few reasons, we actually won the first game in Chicago but got screwed, we haven’t had our starting QB or MLB for most of the first half of the season, and all of these close games probably would’ve been a win had they not’ve been riddled with a high amount of injuries so early, and 4 of the first 6 games were on the road (with a brutal schedule anyways) where we don’t play as well against good teams.

3) Hill isn’t Stafford, but he is probably one of the best back-ups in the league as of right now. He has played well once he got into rhythm.

I don’t think this is the week the Bills win, the Lions have to much talent on both of the lines and it’s too much firepower for the Bills even though I think the Bills are better than their record says they are.

Comment 1 does make sense. You lost close games to good teams. They played lackadaisical when they wanted to and put the pedal to the metal when they had to beat beat the Bills. Same thing used to happen to us last year and the year before. Comment 2 is very true, we are 2 offseasons removed from 0-16 so yeah, we don’t have a lot of depth. Lions Fan here and I recced you too poz.

This attitude of some fans, not only Lions, that the underdogs only do anything positive because the favourite allows them too is totally frustrating to me. I heard it in the games the Lions lost to the Packers, Eagles, Giants, and now the Jets. Each of those team’s fans complained about lousy play calling by their OC, lousy reffing, mental errors, etc. etc. . The last thing they considered doing was saying that “Hey, that other team out there actually did some good things and made some plays and stopped us from making plays.”
You won’t hear that from this Lions fan. I watch the Bills pretty regularly as your games are shown on the Ontario NFL game on CTV. If you beat us, it will be because you made more plays and took advantage of any opportunities…….and we did not.

I hope it is a good game and both teams come out without anymore injuries.

There is nothing worse for a fan base than going 0-16. The season of tears was brutal and I would never wish it upon any of you. But I really hope we finally get our first win this week. I don’t want it close. I want a blowout for the hometown fans.

it was horrible....

As is the case for your team so far I am sure, we had a couple games taken from us on terrible calls (Minny) but when you lose 16 in one season everything is going against you. I really hope you run off a couple wins….. Starting a week from this sunday.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!
