Report: Bills Waive OT Cornell Green Off Injured Reserve
The Cornell Green era in Buffalo has reportedly reached its conclusion. FOX Sports' Adam Caplan reports that the Buffalo Bills have waived Green from its Injured Reserve list.
The Bills signed Green to a three-year, $9 million contract as an unrestricted free agent this past March after Brad Butler's early retirement appeared to catch the team off guard. The 34-year-old right tackle started Buffalo's first five games of the season at that position, but landed on IR with a knee injury that he tried to play through.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey has reportedly been satisfied with the play of Mansfield Wrotto at right tackle, and with rookies Ed Wang and Cordaro Howard on the developmental track, Green was not a part of the team's future.

I can see why you're confused
Cornell is the Big Red.
Dartmouth is the Big Green.
Cornell Green doesn’t make any sense.

Interesting move. I was kind of wondering what would happen with him, but I didn’t expect him to get the can.
Does that make him canned "Corn"nell?

I wonder what this will do to our draft priority. I guess, there is still alot of games left on the schedule and time will help clear that up for me. Either way, entering the season with our starting group and depth has drastically changed since then. If this is an indication of what to expect, we do have other areas to consider. Still you want the best up front and that goes deeper than the first five.

I’m a big fan of the Bills ability to say “yea, we were wrong there (Edwards, Green) – so we’re going to do something different” instead of sticking with what doens’t work.

I'm not
I’d rather the team see the mistakes that even the fans see, and not even have to go through the charade of playing guys that can’t cut it. We all saw Edwards and Green as major failures before the season, yet the organization didn’t.

Yeah, and we were concerned about WR when the FO wasn’t. And a lot of people didn’t like Nix hiring Gailey. And people are still super angry about Kelsay’s extension, despite the fact that he’s been playing well since then.
Fans don’t know more than the talent evaluators, although we like to think we do. I definitely think it’s more important for them to be able to admit a mistake and work to correct it than to have foresight into every situation.

Kurupt is right. Think back and you will see it was all part of the process though.
Edwards did win the battle in Camp, Chan is an offensive coach with success with QB’s but still we all new that he wasn’t the answer just one of the best options at the time. Green was like the second or third OT who visited and because of our history we ended up with that choice. It was an attempt although not a good one to strengthen the position. In hind site they were not part of the future and now they are gone one sooner than the other.

who were the other 2 OT who visited before green? do you remember?
by statcruncher on Nov 23, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly
We “knew” he was the best option at the time. Only he wasn’t. Fitz clearly is a better quarterback than Edwards.
We can’t expect the front office to know what the future will hold. You can’t get mad at the office for signing Green…they needed to do something. When they realized they had made a mistake, and another option was available, they pulled the plug. I don’t understand the sentiment that they should have been able to tell that Edwards was going to flop before the season started. It’s not how life works, unfortunately.
I don’t think the team ever viewed Green as a long term solution so much as a stop gap measure. they were not expecting Butler to retire and were stuck with limited options. I don’t think there was a really high quality player to be had at that point. So they brought him in to fill space until some of their younger guys developed. he didnt play well then got hurt. meanwhile the younger guys are playing pretty well so he is expendable.

I agree with both posts
As Chan Gailey or Nix mentioned in one of their pressers, too many times Buffalo has let players go only to see them become good football players on another team. Sure we knew Edwards wasn’t much of a gamer, but Chan Gailey must have seen the physical skills and thought that he could instill some confidence in the kid. It didn’t work, and they moved on. If Fitz was the starter all year what would that have gotten us? Maybe a win against Miami? We were not going to make the playoffs and everyone knew this team was going to be bad, so why NOT find out what you have before you cut them.
by Eric Murawski on Nov 23, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions
agreed
If they cut everyone before they looked at them there would’ve been a bunch of other players who are now performing not there, don’t forget that. It’s much easier to clean house when you have some of the tools at your disposal already rather than going out to get all of them.

every team makes mistakes – every talen evaluator makes mistakes – every single human on the planet makes mistakes – it’s what you do with those mistakes that makes you who you are.

I understand what you're saying Kurupt
BUT, nobody is a fortune teller. Edwards had physical capability. He played well in camp. Gailey is a coach and if a player has the physical talent that coach will always believe he can turn a guy around. Gailey/Nix had to see Edwardsy in live action to truly find out about him. They found out and got rid of him. That’s good business. What did Gailey say about Stevie earlier in the season? “He’s better than we were told he was.” So if they had listened to that and kept him on the bench what happens? They had to play Edwards and see for themselves, under their coaching and not base it on Jauron’s era.
Those situations aren't comparable
Edwards had played a lot and failed miserably. He supposedly lost the locker room last year and never showed the confidence needed to be a successful NFL starter. He was gun shy and unproductive. There were absolutely no signs he would be good this year and his faillures time and time again were useful in predicting his swift failure this season.
Johnson had never gotten significant playing time and certainly never played with a QB who could get him the ball consistently. There was nothing to base an opinion on or to make a prediction from.

Roscoe had done nothing also
You can not completely dismiss the potential of a new scheme and coach on an inexperienced player. And Lee Evans was quoted during the off-season that Edwards had NOT lost the locker room. Lee said everyone on the team knew what a disaster the offense was due to the personnel and coaching changes.
It cost this team nothing to roll with Edwards while he was showing he was even with Fitz in preseason. Their evaluation was wrong, they admited it and moved on. I can accept that.
Cornell was bottom of barrell, but what can you do when no one else wants to sign here?
He was gun shy and unproductive.
Not before Adrian Wilson rung his bell.
Trent had the talent, but I will admit I was wrong, I underestimated how that concussion could affect Trent.
He was never the same after that.
There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

That is so ridiculous
Not before Adrian Wilson rung his bell.
Yes he was just as gun shy and unproductive. He was just as bad before that hit as he was after. He had possibly his best game as a pro in his first game after that concussion. He had other solid games after that too, so I’m not sure how you (or the others who have) can make that conclusion.
Go look at the stats for his career up to that point. Pretty pathetic to say the least.

eh
maybe on green, but i still say edwards gave them quite a show this offseason. i don’t see how a new coaching staff would look at his production and think “yea lets cut this guy”. of course everyone counters with the “his history sucked too” but you still have to remember, new coach, new scheme, new way of doing things might help any number of players (including the beloved fitzy). i dont understand the vitrol for letting TE try out two weeks, i really dont. he showed everything you wanted in the off season and pre season.
green was reactionary, and without ANY available or good OT’s on the roster, i dont see how they could have done anything different….

I agree. No one is perfect in their draft picks or FA assessments. So at least Boss Hogg & Cooter realize when they have bad talent on the team, they do something about it quickly.

Ayodele has been decent for. We’re essentially getting what we expected. Which is good though because he does ave 3-4 expirience and is a good sub in the 3-4, if not the starter opposite Poz.

who else thinks
The Bills FO are getting less and less concerned about people not wanting to come to Buffalo? With the style that the Bills are playing, surely most players would want to join an organization like that?
FO
Who said FO was concerned about people wanting to come here? Yes, players like to play for winners. Thank Chan for improving teams offense and hope Edwards can improve D. Either way a change in attitude seems to be happening.
