Grading the Bills: Game 8

The only difference in the outcome of this game from the rest was the fact the Bills lost in Canada.  In what felt like more of an away game than home,

Rushing Offense: D+

The Bills running backs met the fifth best rushing defense in the league and learnt why.  While both Fred Jackson and Corey McIntyre scored touchdowns, none of the Bills backs solely ran for more than 20 yards in the game.  Averaging less than 3 yards a carry, the Bills backs could not get to the holes due to solid resistance all day long.  The offensive line could not contain the Bears attackers and atop it all, Jackson also lost a fumble.

Passing Offense: C-

Fitz fizzled again, nothing more to say.  Actually, while throwing a touchdown and nearly 300 yards passing, Ryan Fitzpatrick also threw to late and costly picks in the last quarter, sealing a loss for the Bills.  Despite throwing the ball 51 times for over 60% completion rate, Fitz labored to move the ball upfield, and like last week, had several poor throws.  Steve Johnson had another stellar game on the other hand with 11 catches for 145 yards.  Once again Lee Evans seemed to be an afterthought.  Lastly, the offensive line could not contain the blitz, and while only giving up one sack, did not afford Fitzpatrick a protection for much of the game.

Rushing Defense: A-

Aside from giving up a handful of big runs, the Bills run defense somehow amassed itself to giving up only 105 yards rushing!  (I'm still reeling in shock over this feat)  Compared to giving up nearly 190 yards rushing a game, this is quite impressive, and moves the team into a very good direction.  Great effort by the D-Line and linebackers today against a strong running back.  Torbor and WIlliams get honorable mentions for their efforts today.

Passing Defense: C+

An otherwise strong performance by the Bills secondary was marred by two Bears touchdowns and more alarmingly, no picks yet again.  Pressure was strong for much of the game, but yielded only one sack and fumble recovery by Spencer Johnson.  The last touchdown by the Bears was perhaps inevitable given the starting field possession by the Fitz interception in the fourth.  The return of Terrence McGee and the arrival of Shawne Merriman will be a welcome site for this motley crew.

Special Teams: C

Rian Lindell left the game wondering how an extra point attempt could be blocked after 321 successful consecutive points in his entire career.  Moorman's poor punting average was helped by 2-3 landing within the 20 yard line.  Meanwhile, the kick and punt return game never got a chance to establish itself, but on a more positive note, coverage units were able to contain a powerful Bears return crew.  The Bills caught a bad break when Maynard's punt reversed direction and ended up on the one yard line (although by all means, we in Buffalo know it touched the Bears gunner's shirt) on what would be the Bills last unsuccessful drive.
Spiller who?

Coaching: C-

Chan Gailey is still winless.  Perhaps (as some conspiracy groups may testify), he is playing to lose to get that coveted first pick in the next draft.  On one hand, the defense improved ten-fold, but the offense seemed to take a step back (against yet another tough defense), although that I feel is more on Fitz's throwing than the play calling.  Going for two was the right call, but unlike the Bears, clearly did not work.  I am looking forward to seeing how Gailey and Edwards will utilize Merriman in the defensive packages.

Other Notes:

The Bills are now 0-8, well on their way to securing the number one overall pick this game in the spring!  Of concern was a late injury to Roscoe Parrish following a great attempt to catch the ball in the fourth quarter.

Go Bills and optimistically yours, DynamicHero22

Kyle Williams deserves game ball

He is a complete monster

Sorry; he should have at least been nominated.

HUH??

Did we watch the same game? You make it sound like Fitz lost the game singlehandedly. He was awesome, making incredible throws, under pressure time after time, with an obvious lack of pass protection, like always! There were a couple of throws that he’d like to have back, but even Peyton Manning isn’t perfect. He and the receivers get my game ball.
The stats for the defense might have improved, but somehow the Bears always made the play when it mattered, usually by throwing to a wide open receiver, or running to the open space where Kelsay should have been. I can agree with your knock on Gailey for the bad calls. In the end, the only stat that matters in the wom/lost one, and that only got worse.

it’s was obvious fitz lost the game…. we had a good lead, the defense was playing fair and then fitz throws that crucial interception… worst timing… that changed the whole momentum in the game…

not to forget

his RBs practically scooping balls off the ground on every dump off.

what a joke this grade is

passing C- ?????

what planet are you on?

there was no running game, period…

it was all fitz, all day long….

obviously you are terribly biased against fitz….

he was spectacular for most of the game

I think that's about right

2 INTs one a crucial game killer.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Fitz did not have a good game.

His accuracy was terrible today. Atrocious. You don’t have to be terribly biased against Fitz to realize this.

Kyle Williams

"When I came here, I didn't know anybody, ... I wanted to see what true Buffalonians are like. And so I met them, and they're just like me - just very, very real people. They're not fake or phony. They're not fluff."

Yeah

I agree with Bama, Fitz was better than that and Kyle Williams should split the game ball with Stevie.

by twissyjujub on Nov 7, 2010 6:18 PM EST reply actions

I thought Fitz did really well considering they knew we were gunna throw it

Fitz was making playes all game even though we had no running game at all

If we could run the ball a littles it would make his job a lot easier

Show me the Baby!

Agreed

Overall Fitz played a great game as evident by throwing for 300 yards at 60% completion, especially given the fact that the O-Line was not affording him a lot of protection. He has been unequivocally been the better quarterback than Trent Edwards was. More so, he has established a #2 WR for the Bills in Steve Johnson. Even if the Bills decide to draft a QB this upcoming draft, I would feel compelled for Fitz to start the next year or two because he is clearly a capable quarterback.

That being said though, it is undeniable that his late interceptions are hurting the Bills in the end. I love Fitz, but he has trouble finishing games this season so far. That is all that I mean.
V Patriots – 2 interceptions in 4th quarter, Pats score a TD, Bills lose
V Ravens – 2 interceptions to Ed Reed in 3rd quarter, Bills lose in OT
V Chiefs – 0:20 left, game tied, in Chiefs territory, Bills lose in OT
V Bears – 2 interceptions in 4th quarter, Bears score a TD+2, Bills lose

Bingo

That one near the end of Regulation in the Chiefs game to Berry was pathetic.

I am wondering if it is possible if wearing his wedding ring while playing might be causing some bad throws, where the ring slides against the ball and he is losing some grip.

Isn't the ring on the other hand?

Fitz is a contender not a winner…

by billsstein on Nov 7, 2010 7:37 PM EST reply actions

Unfortunately...

I agree. He makes the plays that keep us in a game and then makes that big mistake. That being said, this team is snake bit! How many extra points in a row did Lindell make, and today he misses? YIKES! This has been 3 very, very, very frustrating weeks. Play well enough to win, yet find a way to lose!

God, I remember those days back in the early 90’s when we found ways to win.

Fans: F

I am a Canadian and I hate the fact that they play these games in the mausoleum known as the rogers center. Put some noise on Cutler and make them have to play in a hostile environment. The fans for this game sucked.

No matter how much you know about something, someone always knows more

Agreed

I’m Canadian too and it’s embarassing. I hope they never do it again. Yes, there are lots of Bills fans in this area (SW Ontario). But they don’t go to see the games in Toronto. They’d much rather go to Buffalo.
