Buffalo Bills Roster Move Wrap-Up
Updating the previous roster moves, the Buffalo Bills have placed LB Andra Davis and WR Roscoe Parrish on season-ending injured reserve. The team has also signed free agent RB Quinton Ganther.
To make room for Ganther, the Bills released running back Andre Anderson, who has been largely ineffective in his limited special teams role. The team also waived FB Rodney Ferguson from their practice squad. This leaves the Bills with two empty active roster spots and one free space on the practice squad.
I'm a visual person, so perhaps this will be easier for us all to understand in a list.
Injured Reserve:
WR Roscoe Parrish
LB Andra Davis
Released:
RB Andre Anderson
FB Rodney Ferguson (practice squad)
Signed:
RB Quinton Ganther
Remaining Roster Spots:
Two Active
One Practice Squad
Feel free to use the comments section to speculate who will fill the two empty spots. I fully anticipate WR Naaman Roosevelt being placed on the active roster to replace Parrish in the WR corps.
One more thing: Chan Gailey informed the media at his press conference that Mansfield Wrotto will start this week at RT. Wrotto has been with the team for just over a month.
That sums up the moves for now, but if this afternoon is any indicator, there could be more news to come.

Whaaaat?
Roscoe AND Davis to the IR?! Dang…
Poor Roscoe. He was playing well… that sucks.
Yes we play all our games at 1 in the afternoon... but Id still like to see "Lights Out!" 8-)
Wake Up Sabres!!! Its officially "Go Time."
Have to hand it to Roscoe. He took the opportunity he was given by Gailey to turn his career around, and it looked like he was having a solid season. Sorry to hear it, Roscoe.

Solid year for sure.
He has more catches and yards than Evans does.

Why wouldn't he be back?
He’s under contract for next year.

Unlucky?
It would be nice if having two experienced strength and conditioning coaches really did mean your team would have fewer injuries. It just seems like the bills have really bad luck. Maybe we can start bringing robots up from the practice squad.
Honestly
The Bills are pretty healthy. A few injuries every season are to be expected. They have two week-one starters on IR (three if you count Roscoe, who’s usually the third WR after Lee and Stevie). Cornell Green probably wouldn’t be on IR if there was any reason to think they actually wanted him back this year. So you lose one guy who contributed on offense, one on defense.
Last year, we just kept losing players.

while others call it typical…
He’s right folks.. by this time in past years, half the opening day starters would have been on IR…

yea
this year is so much better than last year. injuries havent been nearly as big of a problem.

Last year we had 20 players go to IR, we are on track for fewer injuries. I think we have 6-7 with four of those being starters (Green, Davis, Parrish, Mitchell). I’m not counting training camp guys who probably weren’t going to make the team anyway.
Op, silvermike beat me to it.
Big Difference
If it was a conditioning issue such as a pulled or strained muscle as we’ve seen so much the past seasons is one thing, that’s conditioning, but if land on your hand from that jump catch and break bones, that is an unfortunate injury that is unpreventable and happens to every team.

To make room for Gaither
Should read Ganther
Is this Roscoe’s contract year? I wouldn’t mind seeing him getting re-signed now after we all have seen what he can do now.
Is this your homework, Larry?
I called him “Quentin Gaither” about a dozen times before realizing his name was wrong.

I hate it for Roscoe....
finally out of the DJ doghouse, and playing excellent football, the type we always hoped he could… Get healthy Parrish, and do us proud next year….
I’m going to be interested to see who lines up in the slot now? Spiller maybe As I said in preseason, I think Naaman’s future is out of the slot too… Could be very interesting….
Went to my first "BB" meeting today... When I stood, introduced myself, and admitted I was a Billsaholic, the other members threw beer cans at me!!
Probably going to add a WR...
Likely Roosevelt as you all speculate, and probably another ILB. I wonder if a guy like
Matt Wilhelm would be on their radar.
With Roscoe out, I’d like to see Evans get some work in the slot. The Packers did that this past week with Greg Jennings as Donald Driver sat out, and were successful. I’d like to see the Bills try the same thing.

Im wondering
If david nelson takes johnsons spot it three wide sets and stevie goes to the slot. His game would seem to translate better, being that he can get in and out of his cuts so well.
Stevie’s doing too well on the outside right now to move him. I would love to see what happens if we slide CJ over to the slot.
I think maybe
Cj’s having a hard time learning the plays as it is. Its the only reason that I can think of he isnt on the field more. Although I suppose its easier to hear a route call and execute than pass protection. He could be dynamic in the slot.
The only positive I can take from this is
Naaman Roosevelt getting a shot to play and to be honest i think he will solidify his roster spot on this team for next year.

EVANS
Why not see what we can get for Lee? Iove the guy, but he does not get used to his potential. He’s getting older and would be worth a deal. I think the youth of this team is what we need to continue to build on, lets let Lee have a good season somewhere and get something we need.
Chanting or Crying, I'll be at the Ralph
We have lots of young WR
and Evans is the veteran who needs to teach these young guys the right way to prepare and how to be a good receiver. I would be angry and shocked if he left because by a HUGE margin, he is still the best and probably the only deep threat this team has.
by Eric Murawski on Nov 8, 2010 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
Aquire the NEED
We need defensive help badly. Evans is either double covered or too far for anyone we have throwing the ball to reach. Until we have an accurate QB and some “D”, we cannot utilize a deep threat since we cannot get the ball to him. Quick, young recievers like Stevie are what we need for now.
Chanting or Crying, I'll be at the Ralph
I think he takes a lot of heat off of Stevie
he would be missed, especially for what we would get out of him. A 4th round pick does not cut it. That should be considered a slap in the face to a guy who has spent his career here. Gailey and Nix already expressed their stance on this topic by extending Kelsay.
Evens will retire a Bill.
Show me the Baby!
because the offense i not that far off
we need a LT, move Bell to right and a QB, then we have a legit offense. Gailey has done well with the talent he has, no need to weaken it. We are losing tight games while getting no turnovers. That means our offense is close and we have a defense ive problem. If we can resign merriman and pick up a DE in round one we will be a decent football team next year.
Lets be real
There is no way we resign Merriman unless he tears an ACL next game and Buffalo takes a flier on him with an incentive filled contract and hopes he can be good down the road. There is nothing here to attract free agents. There is no social scene, there is no media, and worst of all there is no team. Winning solves all those problems and makes the franchise desirable, but we are going to have to build a solid team with playoff potential before any descent FA is going to come here, which is why we can not rebuild quickly like the dolphins, because those top tier FA will not come here. Look at our additions this yr. Dwan Edwards only signed here because he was hurt and no one else had faith in him, and Andra Davis is a declining player. As long as Merriman shows something in terms of a potential to return to his previous form, Buffalo will be the last place he would sign.
by Eric Murawski on Nov 8, 2010 10:20 PM EST up reply actions
There is one way.

Franchise and transition tags in the new CBA, If the Bills give kelsay 4 years 24 mil, whats a 9 mil franchise tag if you cut Kelsay if Merriman returns to pre injury form.

players tend to like buffalo once they get their
it is mainly the thought of going that is reprehensible
We have absolutely no idea what he’s going to think of the place. If he likes the system, likes the fans, and likes the players, he might want to stick around. Especially if he can be “the guy” that we build a defense around. He’ll be by far the most popular player in Buffalo if he gives us a pass rush. What’s not attractive about that?
A shame about Roscoe
I admit I was skeptical about him before this year, but he has really shown that he can be a major contributor to this team. Let’s hope he comes back healthy next year ready to have a big season. In the meantime, this is a big opportunity for David Nelson, who will likely move into the slot and see a lot more time on the field. Let’s also hope that Naamen Roosevelt gets called up to the active roster and gets a chance to show his stuff.
Copy paste warning:
I’m starting to think that this is very quick to place players on IR. I don’t see the logic in IR’ing either Davis or Parrish unless they were very legitimate long term injuries. And neither seemed the case a few days ago.
I mean I get wanting to play and develop more young players, but by the sounds of it (so far) Parrish could have probably come back for the last 2 to 4 games of the season and Davis for like the last 3. What’s the point in putting either on IR? And for the record, I’m more pissed about Parrish being out, I was really starting to enjoy watching him pay every week.
On the bright side we will get to see a lot more of David Nelson, which may actually be a good thing for this team. In his limited capacity, David has been rock solid. Now he has 8 weeks to show what he can do as out slot receiver, and I’m expecting big things. Now I’m not going to say undrafted rookie sensation… but maybe!

I can say a torn Labrum
is a serious injury. My buddy tore his (I realize he is not a professional athlete) and he was in a sling, without being able to move it for at least 8 weeks before he could even begin to rehab. If the injury hurt too bad for him, then there is no way he was coming back this year. Also on the broken hand front. My guess is he fractured the scaphoid bone. It gets really poor circulation, and is terrible to heal. I broke mine and had surgery, and with a bone growth stimulator and PT I was forbid from even modest lifting for 6 months.

To explain the scaphoid, you usually break that bone on an outstretched had, which was exactly what he did when he attempted to make that diving catch.

That has to be it, a broken wrist is a 4 week injury. Roscoe could still play this year, they must want to see what Nelson can do.

with only 8 weeks left in teh season
any injury that takes about 6 weeks to heal will lead to an IR placement. maybe davis doesnt go on IR if it happens week 1, cuz he would be back week 10, but this late in the season almost any serious injury will place someone on the IR.
by silverstreak3k on Nov 8, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions
The logic in placing Davis/Parrish on IR is simple
They have injuries that aren’t of the 2-3 week variety. Why rush them back to play the final handful of games? Why not let them heal and avoid further injury? We aren’t losing anything with them on IR, we aren’t in a playoff race and desperately need them, and we certainly can’t lose more than we are now.

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
That’s entirely fair. I’m just really disappointed to see Roscoe benched again. He was turning into the entertaining WR I always wanted to see. Call me nuts but I think that our chances of winning games, however slim they were before, actually went down by losing him as our slot receiver. I mean I can’t wait to see what David Nelson can do, but…

Roscoe's broken wrist
Is a 4 week injury and you can still do cardio with the cast on, I know as someone who has had one when I was much younger.
I think if they have judged what the talent can do, they just stick em on IR and get ready for next year by seeing some more play, what is better for this team? Roscoe playing the last 4 games when he is under contract? Or giving nelson some playing time for a better evaluation to see if he fits next year?

Like I said in a previous post, it really looks like if he injured the hand on that play where he dove out of bounds, that he broke his scaphoid. That is the bone at the base of your thumb, and because there is only one artery coming to the tip of the bone (it look sort of like a kidney bean) if you broke it anywhere from the midpoint toward the distal portion, there is going to be problems healing the hand because of that poor circulation, and would almost be guarenteed to have surgery.
by Eric Murawski on Nov 9, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions
you all may be right.
I had a simple wrist break, it didn’t require surgery, just to be set and it was 4 weeks, so I guess I assumed too much.
