Bills vs. Lions: Detroit To Be Without QB Matthew Stafford
It's a little scary to consider just how good the 2-6 Detroit Lions could be if they had a little stability at quarterback. Already a dangerous team regardless of who is under center, the Lions will nonetheless be hindered when they meet the Buffalo Bills in Week 10 after losing starter Matthew Stafford.
Stafford, a second-year pro out of Georgia, is extremely unlikely to play in Buffalo this Sunday, and may, in fact, have been lost for the season after sustaining yet another injury to his throwing shoulder.
Shaun Hill, Detroit's primary backup, is not certain to be available on Sunday, either. Hill, who threw eight touchdowns to six interceptions during four starts - games in which the Lions produced an excellent 28 points per game, by the way - has been out since Week 6 with a broken left forearm. Jim Schwartz is holding out hope that Hill can play, but Hill has not yet practiced taking snaps from under center and handing the ball off with his injured left hand.
Should Hill not be able to play, Drew Stanton would make his first start of the season. In his only extended action this year, Stanton threw for 222 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 28-20 road loss to the New York Giants, who currently sport the league's top-rated defense. Regardless of who plays quarterback, the Bills - with the NFL's 26th-ranked defense - will have a tough time defending a Lions offense loaded with talent.

I've seen this movie before
Stanton throws for 300 yards against the Bills, and in the offseason Buffalo gives up a first round pick for him.
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
Its
The Rob Johnson experience. ;-)

Fred Taylor, if you want to get down to it.
I hear groans about that all the time, and I just don’t get it. So they drafted a fairly successful, though often-injured RB with that pick. The Bills absolutely HAD to take a chance that Johnson panned out. I’ll never ever ever disapprove of them going out, trying to find the QB they think best fits their team…one who may provide them the necessary talent to go all the way to the SB.
It sucks because it didn’t work out, they lost a 1st-round draft pick, and it created a whole mess of controversy that effectively divided the team.
If you don’t take risks, you never have a shot at the rewarding side of things.

Man that is beyond fantasy.
Lions fan here. We lost our place kicker, our #1 QB, and our #1 CB on Sunday. Brutal.
Our #2 QB has a broken left arm. We are hoping he can play against you guys because Stanton is……..well, he’s just Stanton.
We picked up a place kicker already, and I believe our CB, Chris Houston, will be able to play.
We are just down right now. I hope our guys can pull it back together for this Sunday. I was really hoping you guys were going to get a win against Chicago.
Good luck this week. Here is hoping nobody gets injured……..(sobs into keyboard).
cheer up....Fitz will most likely throw Houston a pick 6 to seal the game in the final seconds

Risk of drafting a QB #1
yet another injury to his throwing shoulder.
Same effect as knee injuries to RB’s. This is what shortened Jim Kelly’s career. Loss of arm strength, bad mechanics to compensate, etc. Can’t rush the return. Hope he can recover over time.
how does that make any difference at all?
we could draft any guy and he could get hurt

why you need to provide a O-line
this us why we take Locker or Luck at 1 and sit them for 2 years wile Fitz scrambles for his life till we have a line.
Show me the Baby!
The Lions O Line is a very good pass blocking unit. Only giving up about 3.9% sacks per pass play.
There are only a few teams better than that. Actually only one; The Colts.
Nice.

Please name an OLine that does not allow their QB to be touched.
This is football. There will be contact.
The play Stafford was injured on was a scramble from the pocket. He was tackled from behind and landed on his shoulder. Bad luck? Stafford’s weak spot? Poor judgement?
If you guys wait until you have an All Pro O Line before you draft a “Franchise” QB, you will be waiting a few decades. Good luck with that.
the point is that
the kid has showed promise, but has had 2 bad injuries to his throwing arm. That is not something you want to happen to your 1st overall.
I never said “all pro” O-line, but a more stable one helps a lot.
Show me the Baby!
What do you mean?
We’re one of the best in the league at allowing sacks. We’re t9 in total QB sacked average (Buffalo’s 22nd), and we’re third in the league (behind indy and NO) for sacks per passing play (Buffalo’s 20th).
Not to mention, the last injury Staff took was when he was scrambling out of the pocket.
I guess I am more concerned with J. Best, K. Smith and C. Johnson
Johnson is above and beyond, just throw him the ball type of Receiver. Also, let’s not forget any opponents TE which this week we face Brandon Pettigrew. This isn’t really a team we can take lightly. I bet they come out and play very physical with us. I don’t know much about them defensively, but I do know we don’t run the ball very well and Fitz just put up 51 passes last week, two things I would like to see changed offensively. If the opportunity exsists this is really a game to go and watch. The Lions have some stud players on that team and they are starting to play like it. Nothing earth shattering mind you but they have some playmakers.

The Bills can’t take the bus ride to the stadium lightly! They might wind up at Comerica Park (where they’d lose to the Tigers)

This should not be a tough outing for the Bills if Drew Stanton is starting. So long as George Edwards dials up the blitzes successfully.
Stanton is not good. He also didn’t start the game against the Giants, he came in after Shaun Hill was knocked the heck out and had already thrown 15 passes. Stanton came in and did most of his damage dumping off to RBs and Tight Ends. He also was abysmal when defensive pressure got to him, going 19 for 34 overall but only 2 for 11 when Perry Fewell’s defense got pressure. While it can be argued that defending short passes to RBs and TEs and getting pressure on the QB are some of our biggest weaknesses, Shaun Hill simply isn’t good enough to put fear into our defense and I expect our secondary to get its first interceptions of the year.
In his only career start Drew Stanton completed only 52% of his passes and threw 3 interceptions and 0 TD passes. Im not worried if hes starting.
The problem, as it is every week, is the run defense.

I had to laugh. Imagine a successful blitz from the defense for a second. It’s hard to imagine, I know.

Hey, it could happen...
Actually it did happen… once. Remember all that ‘Kelsay sack?’ ‘No, Kelsay pressure, Johnson sack" back and forth on Sunday? Plus Cutler was scrambling like … he was facing a decent pass rush. That’s about all I can say.
by Orlando John on Nov 10, 2010 12:12 AM EST up reply actions
I still think Cutler scrambling was part of the design. Notice how much Mike Martz leaned on the rush last week? It was a game unlike anything he’s ever called before. He involved the tight end and made sure not to put the game too much into Cutler’s hands.

Detroit really choked last week. I saw a lot of their game in between Buffalo’s commercials. If Buffalo is hoping to avoid 0-16 (I know I am), this is the game they have to have. 3rd string QB and a team that wins on the road about 6 times a decade. No excuses, just win, baby (in honor of the 5-4 Raiders, who apparently OBD was worthy of mocking last January).
"There's only one C.J. Spiller." -Buddy Nix
since when is 5-4
impressive? Its just a sign of how truly terrible the Raiders have been this decade that everyone is so impressed right now. This is the first winning record they’ve had after the mid point of a season in 8 years and we’re all amazed, says a lot. We were 5-1 two years ago. Color me unimpressed.

just to clarify
not saying you said it was impressive, that was more of a rant against ESPN (I seem to be doing that a lot this season)

Last Chance ....
This very well might be our last and only chance at a victory for the year …. after the Browns put the defending Super Bowl Champs in the corner 2 wks ago and bent the Patriots over there knees and spanked them last week they dont look very beatable anymre …. A case could be made for the Bengals but we have no shot at beating them the only way we win is if the Bengals beat themselves ….

I agree…the Lions and Bengals are Buffalo’s best hope at a win. Buffalo seems to won Cincinnati (I think the win streak is at 8 or 9), but I’m not sure that matters much now as the teams are vastly different since their last meeting. With that game on the road, Detroit is the game to circle and the team to throw the kitchen sink at. 0-16 would be an utter disgrace.
"There's only one C.J. Spiller." -Buddy Nix
And what better way to avoid that than by defeating the only team to have ever lost 16 games in one season.

The bills
Have the 26th ranked defense. That doesnt sound right although I guess we havent been giving up as many points lately.
I’m not sure if he means ranked in yards allowed or ranked in points allowed, but the defense has limited the damage the past couple of weeks. They’re not playing that well, but they are playing better, and our ranking has increased. I wish our offensive ranking would go up too.
It’s true. Look at the Green Bay game for proof of that.

neither one of us really has much
to talk smack about sadly. But hey, at least you guys have a franchise QB, even if he is hurt (which I am sorry to see, I like Stafford)

i’ll talk some smack dude.
there’s no what we win that game – we’re so bad we make the 2007 Detroit Lions look like world champions (sorry!)
you want to see defensive lack of performance – look no furthur than the Bills
you think your QB situation is bad? Have you not seen our QBs? Trent Edwards, I mean, Trent Edwards was our starting QB – Trent Edwards.
wait – is that what talking smack is like? ohhh I get it – i’m suppose to talk smack about the other team.
well – our punter could kick your punter’s a** – so take that!

I hope you mean the 2008 Lions.
The Detriot team in 2007 was 9-7 and after their 4-0 preseason in 2008 (before they went 0-16) they were thought of better than the 11-5 Falcons for teams to go to the superbowl that year.
I hope you mean the 2008 Lions.
si – epic fail on my part (obviously)
i’m just looking to you guys as a philosphy on how we need to draft – you’re building correctly. here’s to hoping that Stafford isn’t injury prone the rest of his career!

The 2007 Lions went 7 and 9 after starting the year 6 and 2.
We squeaked out a home win against KC who were in the midst of an nine game losing streak. The 2007 team was almost as bad as the 2008 team. We just had an easier schedule, and got some incredible breaks in the first half. Better to be lucky than good? Not in my book.
hi fellow colts fan here to say
that i’ve watched the bills for the last couple of weeks and your team is not bad…i’ve been very impressed with how well they have played against teams like ne, bal, and kc. i salute to your team always playing hard until the end they’re a relentless group
thanks – i’m pulling for the Colts to win the SB

I think we're going to do it this time.
And we’re gonna beat the Browns, and potentially the Jets if they’ve locked up the playoffs. 3-13, which will reflect that we’re better than that 2-14 team in ’85, but not hurt us in the draft significantly.
I think we’ll probably still get the first or second pick at that record, and take Luck or Locker… then our needs are ‘O-line, OLB even if Shawne signs and is worth the money, D-line’. God, I’d love it if Ed Wang actually pans out as a tackle, let alone a blindside tackle. (Been playing a lot of Madden 08 Franchise with my left-handed QB, where I have never figured out why the AI doesn’t switch Peters and Walker, thus my not just saying ‘left tackle’ there. /tangent) But if not, supposedly all the line prospects next year are second-or-lower rounders.
And dear lord, Shawne talking about wanting to help Maybin pan out … please let it be true and please let it work, the passing up of Oher will sting just a little less if he re-learns how to play the game.
