My wideout plan

after seeing our 3 undrafted wide recievers step up and make plays last week in our win against miami and throughout the year I have a plan to maximize our talent while still getting some extra players out of it.  If you count the four WRs that played Sunday (Steve, namaan, david, and donald) we will be entering the off season with 7 wide outs with talent and some kind of experience (Evans, Parrish, and don't forget Marcus Easely).

With that being said I do like all of these guys and all of them bring something to the table (Easely hasn't played an actual game but he turned in bomb after bomb in training camp and was looking like he even had a shot at the 2nd WR role if you guys remember right.)  Roscoe Parrish was on pace for a monster 800 yards and 4 TDs after the first half of the season (thats with playing 2 games with Edwards also so that even handicapped his stats).  David nelson looks like hes gonna finish the year between 400-500 yards and around 4 Tds and has really come on.  Even Donald Jones has shown he can be very effective at using his strong frame (led all WR's in benching at the combine) to make tough catches and he also has breakout speed.

Why am i giving you guys a summary of what our young  wide outs have done this season?  Because I think now is the time to trade Lee Evans ladies and gentleman.  I love the guy and I love that fact that he has always wanted 2 stay in Buffalo despite losing but I think this is the year to stockpile draft picks.  We have seattle's 4th rounder, if we trade Lee I think we can get a late second or early 3rd at the worst.  I also want the Bills to trade down to around pick 8 or 9 and draft Robert Quinn and pick up a few more picks.

Go easy on me, I have only spent like 3 days with Buddy as his assistant GM

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I love Lee as well...

But if we could find someone to give us a 2nd or 3rd for him I would do it in a heartbeat. We have talent at WR. I think the 2nd or 3rd is more important to us than Lee Evans… but I do love the guy. Plus it would be nice for him to have a shot at some winning.

As much as I love Lee, I would agree with you.

But only if we trade him to a team with a solid chance. We owe him as much loyalty as he’s shown us, if we trade him it has to be to a team that can really utilize his talents and a team that has a solid chance.

I like the idea except I’m not sure someone would want to take on his salary. I believe it was 7-8 million average but if the actual salary goes down (ie. bonus already payed out) then maybe someone would bite. No to Quinn though, too scared he is the second coming of ….. well you know.

Then Buddy is in the driver’s seat. Either a.) should be able to get some value on the trade market (2-3 rounder) or b.) we keep a nice deep threat for an affordable price. I would love to get another pick and that kind of pick is so low risk (guaranteed cash) and often high reward (see multitude off said draft picks producing in the NFL, not pre Nix Bills picks except poz of course). It is the Patriots/Belicheck way.

Quinn

have you watched how strong robert quinn is? he is a completely different player than maybin

by baduszk122 on Dec 22, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

Kinda hard to watch

Quinn since he missed the entire 2010 season. Was pretty good 09.

Have to see his combine results to make my list.

Evans

I’m 50 / 50 on this. Evans drew a lot of attention away from Stevie and Roscoe. He also was inches away from a few deep passes from Fitz. More off-season work with Fitz could make for a banner year for Evans. However, it’s tough to watch Nelson, Roosevelt, Jones and also Easley sit out when they all can produce.

Maybe we scrap the TE position completely and just go 4 wide. 4 wide causes problems for a 3-4 defense due to the speed vs. linebackers. Evans, Roscoe, Nelson and Stevie makes for a GREAT four wide set of speed, size and possession. Gailey opens up the passing game and this should open up draw plays for Spiller and Jackson. I can see this team becoming a pass-first, run-second team with that offense.

Regardless, I’m convinced that Fitz’s off-season work with the second string (Nelson, Jones and Roosevelt) is the primary reason all three are contributing.

I idea sounds like a good one at first glance for sure. Why not get rid of a guy when we have so much young talent on the roster? To me, exactly because we have so much young talent it is more important than ever to keep Lee Evans. The guy has been a loyal, hard working Bill his whole career. He has never been a diva. He approaches the WR position the right way and he never showboats. He likes this team and the fans. He’s a smart player. I would love Stevie, David, Donald Marcus, and Naaman to learn from him.

Another reason I wouldn’t trade him is that none of those guys have shown they can spread a defense with a deep threat. Even when Lee doesn’t get the ball there is real value of having a defense have to account for him, it opens up the passing attack.

Lastly, maybe I’m naive, old school, or whatever you want to call it (sireric prefers Hachiko) but I’d like to have an organization that doesn’t just toss out a relatively affordable, loyal, high character veteran after a career being in an irresponsibly run organization right when we’ve finally got a guy in charge who seems to have a vision for where this team will go.

I personally wouldnt go shopping Lee, I’d listen to offers, but hes under contract so I have no need to shuttle him out just yet.

I don't know how much Lee can teach about routs,

but atleast he can teach them the deep ones

Great points Poz

especially the intangible points but…

none of those guys have shown they can spread a defense with a deep threat

which is true, but neither do the Pats really and I know he hasn’t proven squat yet but Marcus Easley is waiting in the wings and showed some in camp and has potential to spread the D.

I love the prospect of Easley but camp isn’t game situations. Trent Edwards played a good camp and beat out Fitz too…

Yeah it’s risky, but you have to give and take if we are going to stockpile draft picks. The flip side is not getting our over loaded wr’s all on the field and getting nothing in return.

I think we should keep them all.........

including Lee and Roscoe. Roll with them again next year. They are both still under contract.

That will give the kids another year to grow and learn. They need it.
The youngsters are CHEAP right now. But another good year and Steve is gonna want to get paid. He might even start complaining as soon as the season is over.

And the injury bug is always lurking around the corner. Great depth is a luxury.
Why take a team strength and turn it into a weakness?
For an unproven 3rd or 4th rounder? I’m not signing up for that one.

I think we should keep them all………

I have no beef with that at all. But then the team needs to decide how they’re going to keep all of them. Would they make Roosevelt go back to the PS? Would they actually keep 7 WRs on the active roster? All this is assuming no injuries, of course, and injuries are always a possibility, but I’m curious about your thoughts about how they keep and use them all.

by thefourwinds on Dec 22, 2010 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

And anyone you put back on the PS has the potential of being signed away.

by thefourwinds on Dec 22, 2010 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, whichever one lands on the PS is gone by week 2.

THAT is why i'm serious.

by Trashplate on Dec 22, 2010 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Not worth it

Lee Evans has great speed and phenomenal hands. Things haven’t worked out to take advantage of his talents the last two years, but he could still be very productive in the future. I would be open to trading him for a late first-rounder or early second-rounder, but nothing lower than that.

Since Jones and Roosevelt have real special teams value one can make the case for having 7 WR’s next year — especially if NFL rosters expand under the new CBA. Other teams have done that and it only makes sense, since injuries seem to happen more frequently at that position.

by Macktruck on Dec 22, 2010 12:50 PM EST reply actions

Thanks for your thoughts on this, Macktruck. I was wondering if Jones and Roosevelt had enough ST value to make keeping 7 WRs active a reality. I don’t get to watch the games.

by thefourwinds on Dec 22, 2010 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Jones definitely does. Assuming Easley is good enough to make the team next year as the 5th WR, Jones will very likely be included as a 6th.. He reminds me of a stronger, slightly less fast Courtney Roby. I haven’t seen enough of Naaman on kick coverage to have an opinion on his ST ability yet.

THAT is why i'm serious.

by Trashplate on Dec 22, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Naaman gets downfield very fast on kick coverage and plays with a lot of attitude. The big question would be whether the Bills need that spot for another position, but if the rosters expand next year it might be reasonable to keep him.

by Macktruck on Dec 22, 2010 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

jones is a beast on ST's

Cause he’s so strong. Easley is also big and physical and apparently he played alot of ST at UConn before his breakout season.

I actually liked Naaman returning punts in the preseason. He seemed fluid and natural with the ball.

by KC13 on Dec 22, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

A second or third?

I’m thinking a fourth is more likely. It’s been years since the guy’s performance has been in accord with his reputation. Frankly, I’ve been a bit confused with the widely-held opinion that Lee’s an elite receiver on the wrong team. Clearly, this sentiment has changed considerably over the course of this season, but not enough if we still think we can get a second for him.

by kai11 on Dec 22, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions

Keep Evans and Parrish for one year

Keep all your receiver for now, if the Bills go after any receivers in the future, look for another speedster in the draft to stretch defenses, play special teams or just in case if something happens to Evans or Parrish, the Bills would not skip a heartbeat.

by Anthony7 on Dec 22, 2010 6:59 PM EST reply actions

This is not how Nix works

He will keep all seven, and then make a decision at the begining of next year. Probably putting Naman back on ps. I hate to lose any of our WR’s, but I would rather lose one good number seven WR that might could be a number five WR on another team than loose Lee Evans. For what ?? A mid round draft pick?? No thanks.

Also Roscoe, and Stevie are FA in 2012. IMO let Lee play out his contract.

Does any one see a little saints in our we corps. I don’t know about u but thre yrs go drew brews was throwing to guys like colston and meachem and moore. These guys r not bug time names and I’m sure they were all mid to low round picks. And their just getting the job done.

Im over pop corn..... But i still like me a little Spiller Thriller!!!!!!!!!!

WR core doesn't impress me

They have had a good year but can they sustain it. The WR position has a lot of players that have a good year or two then fizzle out to sub par.
