Draft order for 2011
With Cincinnati and Denver both winning this week, and Buffalo losing, the Bills are currently in 4th, but still alive for the 2nd overall pick. Carolina, of course, has locked up the first pick in the draft. If the Bills win next week, they could drop as low as 9th; I don't think they could be any better than 6th, but the calculations for a win are much more complicated since there are so many teams at 5-9 or 5-10 right now.
For the sake of maximizing the draft order, let's assume the Bills lose to the Jets next week. This leaves them at 4-12, and that means only three teams matter; Carolina with the first pick, the Broncos, and Bengals. The Broncos have a much easier strength of schedule, and it's not possible to catch them. However, Cincinnati is even with Buffalo, so it's possible to draft above them.
This leaves four possibilities:
- Denver and Cincinnati both win; the Bills have the #2 pick after Carolina. The Bills would also pick second in the second round (34).
- Denver loses; Cincinnati wins. The Bills have the #3 pick after Carolina and Denver, but would switch with Denver in the second round and still have pick 34.
- Denver wins; Cincinnati loses. This is variable; the Bills would either pick 2 (and 35) or 3 (and 34). In order to get the #2 pick, all four results below need to occur.
- Denver and Cincinnati both lose. Again, variable; the Bills would either pick 3 (and 35) or 4 (and 34). To get the #3 pick, only three of the four results need to occur.
There are only four games that matter for strength of schedule:
- Philadelphia beats Minnesota (Tuesday night)
- Oakland beats Kansas City
- Houston beats Jacksonville
- Indianapolis beats Tennessee
So, the teams to root for are Denver and Cincinnati, and then Philly, Oakland, Houston, and Indy if Cincinnati loses.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I hope to god we don’t win next week. If we somehow drop to 9th this season instantly becomes disappointing. I’m sorry but I’m holding out hope the Panthers pass on Luck and we have the 2nd overall pick. A receiver like AJ Green might be good enough to make up for a bad QB, and maybe they think Clausen is good enough.

Luck will be going back to school, so it doesn’t matter

The Jets are going to field their scrubs next week so it’s pretty likely that the Bills will win and drop to 8th or 9th.

to the Steeler scrubs….not saying it is likely or unlikely but it could happen

LoL and that was a game that had we won, we’d have earned a playoff berth.
Just terrible.

True
A loss is certainly possible, especially if the Jets decide to play their starters for at least the first half or if the Bills play a game anything like the one they played this past Sunday. I guess I’m just frustrated by the fact that a win this week would be absolutely meaningless and by how devastating it would be draft-wise.
That Steeler loss was definitely the worst of the past decade.

yeah i hear ya
I never want to see my team to just roll over and give a win to the other team but deep down I really do want the Bills to lose so they can have that better draft pick. And yeah that Steeler loss still stings to this day.

Picking 9th after the way this season has gone would be extremely disappointing.

BTW
We are #3 right now I think
Cause Cincy has the #1 strengh of schedule and we have the #2…thus Cincy would draft behind I think

That was last week — right now the Bills strength of schedule is 139-100 and the Bengals are at 138-100, so the Bengals would draft ahead for now. It will be tied (at 139-101) after Tuesday night if Philly beats Minnesota.
Wait a tick
How are you getting that many games? After the end of this week each team will have played 15 games against teams who have played 15 games each. 15×15 = 225. Where does the other 15 come from?

Would it be even less since
We all play 3 teams twice each ? or do their strength of schedules count for double ?
3 AM Monday morning games all 2010 - that's just dandy !
Their strength of schedules do count double. And the other 15 games are from next week’s opponent’s – so it’s 16 teams x 15 weeks = 240.
Ahhh gotcha
Thanks for doing this by the way. I was also curious, although I pretty badly want to beat the Jets.

????
Is it strictly strength of schedule or does head to head count? The Bills beat the Bengals and loss to the Vikings.

I believe that head-to-head is a tiebreaker that can come into effect. Thats why three of four of the games above have to shake out as listed if the Bills and Bengals end up with the same record at the end of the year. That way it doesn’t go to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
