Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Each year Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News compiles statistics on the best special teams unit and ranks each. The Browns came in first followed by the Bucs and then Buffalo.

Buffalo opponents had the worst punting average, a testament to how hard it is to kick in Buffalo and how awesome Brian Moorman is.

Well he was under contract, cali. He resigned. It wasn’t the Bills decision to have Bobby April leave.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 14, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

no they made it impossible for him to want to stay........

Why give out the title of “Asst” head coach then when you fire the HC during the season you give the title of Interm HC to someone else on the staff?

Total slap in the face…..I dont blame him one bit for not wanting to stay.

Do you think he would be the Bills special teams coordinator right now had the Bills made him interim head coach? That’s the only way your argument has merit. I personally don’t think he would go back to being a lowly ST coach after that.

I dont know what he would have done.........

thats not for me to say…….Im just speaking as to how it appears from my point of view.

It is for the best. April is more responsible than Jauron for our 7-9 finishes

Without April, the Bills finish 3-13 instead, fire Jauron a lot sooner, and we start drafting better talent long ago……see…..all April’s fault :-)

If we end up with Vick, T.O., Richie I., and Porter….that is really pushing the dbag density limit for one team.

by Joe P. on Feb 14, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

From your point of view the Bills should have promoted April instead… why? They end at the same conclusion.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 14, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

we dont know that........

we will never know that.

You can put your blinders on and say it was the Bills fault that April left but the reality is that only one way does April stay – he gets promoted to HC when the Bills fire Jauron and he wins out. The Bills make the playoffs and April is a hero. Then April is the HC and he hires someone else to run the special teams… so we lose him from the job no matter what. But continue to find ways to hate, by all means.

ok......

way to extreme for where I was heading, but ok.

Obviously I see I've developed a new reputation lately (not saying its not deserved)

but when you say “we would have lost April from the job, no matter what” I dont believe that to be true……

Its extremely possible (had April done what you said and won out, won the job etc) that he would still have his say in Special Teams if he wanted.

Thats like saying because Chan Gailey is head coach he wouldnt have any influence on the Offense……but that’s what he is precisely doing…running the offense while running the entire team as well.

The only thing I “hate” about this particular instance is the perception that the Bills failed to show the proper respect to a man they appointed to a certain position……especially considering he was one of the more successful coaches the team employed for the last few years.

I just find that to be a tacky way of doing business.

I’m not disagreeing with you on the whole Bobby April vs. Perry Fewell thing. Both would have been appropriate and acceptable hirings as interim coach.

One thought of the whole thing could have been Bob Sanders and George Catavolos. April had nobody to pick up the slack really whereas Fewell had two incredibly seasoned defensive coaches to lean on.

And your reputation is displayed in your signature. Plus I think none of the Gailey hate changes the fact that April was going to opt out if the Bills brought in a new coach anyways. Besides your original point that I decided to pick a fight with was the notion that April wasn’t re-signed. That is categorically untrue. He had a contract with an opt out clause he took.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 14, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

I realize that April left........he did that on his own...

but Im of the opinion that he chose to opt out because he felt slighted……..which is backed up by the report from John Clayton and ESPN.

I did say re-signed……and that was the incorrect word to use there….I definitely should have worded that differently.

I happen to agree with you norcali

April was the assistant HC and should have been given the shot instead of Fewell. Doing what the Bills did was disrespectful to April. I was like saying his title was a sham. If the Bills FO had given April a shot and still wanted to hire Gailey, they could have look April in the eye and said, “We feel Chan has more HC experience and gives us a better chance to win, but we would love for you to stay on in your current role.” Then, I would say the FO treated April appropriately. If they had done that to me, I would have never stayed.

If we end up with Vick, T.O., Richie I., and Porter….that is really pushing the dbag density limit for one team.

Also, let’s be honest. What do the Browns, Bucs, and Bills have in common? They’re bad teams. Special teams aren’t 1/3 like Levy used to say. If your special teams don’t implode and make an occasional play, they’re largely irrelevant these days.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 14, 2010 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Cleveland, Tampa Bay, then Buffalo. It’s good to see that great special teams play leads to lots of wins. Maybe that’s what we’ve been doing wrong for the last ten years.

3 craptastic teams at the top. In the Bills case, some of those roster spots that are ST only may have helped the overall record more by being useful reserves on offense and defense. Not sure if the other two teams have ST only specialists on their rosters too.

Very interesting that this years super bowl teams were ranked 28th and 29th on the same list.

Good to see Seattle at 11th

Love to see what DeHaven does with Moorman and Lindell on his team.

I’m actually a little surprised due to the first 4 games our special teams coverage was horrible. I like the fact that they did get it together and understood their assignments after those games, but I would rather take a top 10 O & D and a lower third ST… I have tons of faith in DeHaven. Put Leodis back there on kickoffs, trade Roscoe, draft a change of pace back that has kick/punt return experience and we’ll be fine and dandy.

By the by, wasn’t Pittsburgh terrible at special teams last year?

Glad to see that we’re among elite company! Bills, Bucks, and Browns! I hope our special teams unit stays that good amidst all of the changes going on.

These special team rankings are extremely silly.

Apparently there’s 22 categories, and each and every one of those 22 categories are weighted equally. And then the difference between each rank within those 22 categories is equal as well.

And apparently it takes nearly 2 months to put together.

That this is the most respected special team rankings is mind-boggling to me, particularly when Football Outsiders exists.
