Web Rumblings: Buffalo Bills Links, 2/16

Is Jimmy Clausen the next J.P. Losman? - AFC East Blog - ESPN
"In my recent rundown of mock drafts, Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen appears in a few forecasts. But ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay douses the optimism by daring to compare Clausen to Bills pariah J.P. Losman."

Monday Morning Quarterback - Peter King - SI.com
"I would suggest that they start [deciding how to compensate retired NFL players] by looking at the knees of Conrad Dobler, a guard for the Cardinals, Saints and Bills, who made three Pro Bowls and earned $450,000 in 10 seasons, ending in 1981. His knees are more road maps than functioning joints, part of the 34-surgery nightmare he endured to be a football player." Picture through the link.

Legacy Of Three Men - OleMissSports.com
Ole Miss looks back at some trailblazing African-American sports stars from the school's history including former Bills DL Ben Williams. Williams was one of the first pair of African-Americans to play for the southern school.

Bills Strong Safety Donte Whitner is a Redskin?- Hogs Heaven
The other day I posted a link saying Whitner may end up in D.C. according to a source of the SBN Redskins blog.  Well now the same blogger is saying he couldn't confirm the first report.  In other words, not gonna happen.

Edwards taking 3-4 task head on - BuffaloBills.com
"Edwards has immersed himself in Bills defensive game tape from 2009 in an effort to gain a firm grasp of the talents and capabilities of every player on the current roster, so he knows how realistic a full scale switch can be, and where they made need to make some additions."Sports, Ink: This Day in Buffalo Sports History: Whoops
On February 13, 1998, the Bills acquired QB Rob Johnson from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Read Vic Carucci's account of the trade here.

Sports, Ink: This Day in Buffalo Sports History: Cleaning house
On February 11, 2000, the Bills ended their most successful era in team history by releasing Andre Reed, Thurman Thomas, and Bruce Smith - all on the same day.

Further info on 3-4 switch – Inside The Bills
"First, it allows you to get an edge rusher very quickly off the back side and he may get locked up with a back or a tight end from time to time, which is a great matchup for you (as a defense)," said Gailey. "The other thing that it does is it puts more linebackers in your whole scheme and it improves your special teams a result."

Offseason dates of note – Inside The Bills
"Here’s a rundown of some of the more important offseason dates and deadlines on the NFL calendar."

Free agency: AFC East - AFC East Blog - ESPN
"The Bills' roster presumably will experience considerable turnover under new general manager Buddy Nix and new head coach Chan Gailey, who's switching the defense to a 3-4 scheme. The Bills don't have any free agents they must re-sign. Their most notable unrestricted free agents are Owens, Reed and Scott. The club probably won't go out of its way to sign any of them."

Will the Bills be players for another Edwards? : Buffalo Sports Daily
Patrick Moran thinks the Bills might go after Baltimore DE Dwan Edwards.

Congressional hopeful, ex-NFLer, lauds Tebow ad | Gainesville.com
Jay Riemersma is running for Congress and held a party to celebrate Tim Tebow's Super Bowl ad.

NFL offseason burning questions for AFC teams - Jim Trotter - SI.com
"BUFFALO BILLS -- Can new coach Chan Gailey transform Trent Edwards or Ryan Fitzpatrick into a winning quarterback?"

2010 storylines - Ross Tucker - SI.com
"Buffalo typically likes to do at least one thing every offseason to spark some interest among the fan base and gain the attention of the national media. Considering the hiring of Chan Gailey didn't exactly light up the phones in the ticket office, they may have to turn to Vick. Stay tuned."

Saints obvious choice for some very early rankings - NFL.com
"30. Buffalo Bills - I have a feeling the Bills will be last in AFC East for a long time. Like their old coaching staff more than the new one. Godspeed." At least we're ahead of the Bucs and Rams....

2010 NFL Draft
2010 7-round NFL Mock Draft - NFL Draft Site - DraftSite.com

With Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen off the board, the Bills bypass a bunch of OT and LB prospects as well as Dez Bryant to pick Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan in this mock draft.

Mock Draft 2.1 - Mocking The Draft
"9. Buffalo- WR- Dez Bryant- Oklahoma State - Jimmy Clausen is a possibility here but Coach Gailey has shown that he could get production out of lower level talent. Dez Bryant adds a dynamic playmaker to the offense and whoever is at quarterback well be happy with this pick. The Bills might be making the switch to a 3-4 defense so if someone rises up the board that fits the scheme, which could be the pick."

not that i really care, but why is whitner quitting twitter? is he finally deciding to put up and shut up?

by quantumuprising on Feb 16, 2010 9:08 AM EST reply actions

Unfortunately for him, besides getting tasered, twitter is the most interesting thing about him. How will he get people to talk about him now?

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 16, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

well it is – and it’s pretty much useless. 87% of all twitter registered users have yet to use it.

I do think it’s good for guys like Scheftler, blogging etc… – more of an informational avenue. but as far as telling people i’m going to the gym, i’m eating a banana – is totaly f’in pointless and waste of everyones time

Hello - thanks for reading my signature. It's very interesting. Bye

Yeah. We used to write where we were on white board in college. Then the AOL Instant Messanger away message was the thing. Now Facebook and then Twitter.

I use Twitter to get some one on one contact with writers and get the links as soon as they post. Helpful.

That’s the first useful thing i’ve heard regarding twitter. Otherwise, I find it bothersome. It’s as though people have forgotten how to speak in full sentences and interact with others in real life. I guess the internet is real life, in the end.

You should hear what English teachers think of textspeak. There was some talk of developing new punctuation symbols to accurately describe feelings via text like sarcasm, jollity, etc. They went nutso.

I think its nuts how Dobler can get declared permanently disabled. That’s just crazy and wrong. That has nothing to do w/ the NFL, but that needs to be fixed.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 16, 2010 11:12 AM EST reply actions

You mean “Dobler can’t get declared” right?

by MattRichWarren on Feb 16, 2010 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

Ummm…yes. I wish you could edit comments. Now I permanently look like an idiot by accident instead of for something I write on purpose later that makes me look like an idiot.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 16, 2010 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

I hope Dobler doesn’t hurt me, b/c even with those ridiculously bad knees, I’m still scared of him.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 16, 2010 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I read this article in the actual paper it was printed on. It’s a worthwhile read if you are a fan of Dobler’s. Also I read They Call me Dirty which was the first book Dobler put out shortly after his retirement. It is well worth the read if you can find it. I have also purchased Pride and Perseverance which is a new book the Dobler has just put out. Haven’t gotten to it yet.

Blind people and those without a TV/DVD ??

The Post is a rag. It is the Enquirer only thicker. The Daily news has better puzzles in it too.

Oh come on!

You mean to tell me you don’t like a newspaper that has used headlines such as “Headless Body Found in Topless Bar”, “He’s Saddam Mad”, “Ho No” (for Eliot Spitzer) and “Stinko de Mayo” is nothing more than a rag to you? The Post is the funniest newspaper ever.

I think its nuts how Dobler can get declared permanently disabled. That’s just crazy and wrong

this stresses the importance of education. he doesn’t need his knees to do a lot of jobs – i know “disabled” people that work just fine with a cane or in a wheelchair.

I agree that they should get some sort of compensation – and I think he will – but he can also do lots of things on his own for income. in time the NFL will get things straight – but it’ll take time

Hello - thanks for reading my signature. It's very interesting. Bye

Dobler owns his own business. The issue is that his wife was in a bad accident and is a quadriplegic. So now he not only has to earn money, but he has to take care of his quadriplegic wife all while not really being able to walk.

No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.

by sireric on Feb 16, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that they should get some sort of compensation

That’s sort of my point. He’s in the sad shape he’s in because of the NFL and what he gave for the game (which helped make the game what it is today).

in time the NFL will get things straight – but it’ll take time

When did Dobler retire? I think they’ve had enough time.

this stresses the importance of education

Thanks for the condescension, but it is the NFL retirement board here, not a health insurance company, etc. When your legs are so bad b/c of your job that they are talking amputation, you should be able to be declared disabled by the billion dollar company you worked for. I wasn’t talking legally…..it’s pure fairness. Dobler’s is an extreme case and everyone admits this problem exists. Fix it!

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 18, 2010 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Having a party for a Super Bowl ad……really Jay Riemersma? Why do former football players think they should get to run for office. I’m sort of tired of it. Unless they’re going to pummel some politicians. Then I’m all in.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Feb 16, 2010 11:18 AM EST reply actions

Ummm

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Bills sign Dwan Edwards from Baltimore.
