Offense vs. Defense

As for the last decade the bills can't put together a playoff team. Injuries have been hurting us along with lack of players in certain positions. Well this season there is a lot of talk what could happen on both offensive and defensive sides of the ball. I am in favor of a strong defense, some examples:

-Jets - made playoffs with rookie head coach and rookie QB....because they have a strong defense and great defensive schemes. Rex Ryan put together a solid defense in an off-season bringing in players from the Ravens and some other names on defense that made an impact.

- Ravens -in 2000 the ravens won the Superbowl with a strong defense, their offense was lacking and not consistent at all. I know they had some play makers and some big names at the time on defense (but they still didn't have an offense). Trent Dilfer had 12 TDs with 11 Ints and a passer rating of 76.6...no Peyton Manning there

-Steelers -in 2008 they wont the Superbowl with a defense, many will comment on this however look at the numbers the steelers defense was top in the league with total yards and total pass defense. They were not even top 5 in any offensive stat.

-Tampa Bay in 2002 the Bucs went on to win the Superbowl a strong defense. Leading the league in total ypg and total passing yards in the regular season. In the Superbowl the Bucs made Oakland turnover the ball 5 times. Lets face it the Bucs didn't have an amazing QB either Brad Johnson.

Of course there are many offensive teams that have one the Superbowl or had success in playoffs. With a strong defense teams can set the tone of a game and provide the turnovers to help your offense win. I am not saying a team doesnt need an offense but with a strong defense it allows you to be an average offense.

The Buffalo Bills are moving in the right direction to put together a strong defense.

1) Bringing in GUYS that know the system. George Edwards has had some good success with the 3-4. The man helped Miami destroy Buffalo's offense in Week 4 of this past season. Next, Buddy Nix the man made pro bowlers in San Diego. Nix is considered by some to be one of the top five talent evaluators in the NFL, thats good news we need more talent on both sides of the ball. Keeping George Catavolos he created a ballhawking secondary last season. The Bills had 28 int 22 where from DBs and 9 where from the ballhawk himself Jairus Byrd (and he was not 100% the whole season).

2) Moving to the 3-4 defense many teams that are winning with defense today play a 3-4 defense. It allows your team to be faster. I know it is going to be a different look for Buffalo but we are going to be running a hybrid defense. Yes, we need to fill some gaps DT is the biggest....but it is time we step up and bring a big name defensive player in. Our DE are average which will be alright with 2 good outside linebackers.....Maybin will be fast and good enough to make one of those. We could use schobel if he doesn't retire we really could use him to build a strong D. Inside linebackers....mitchell and poz they are strong and both going to benefit from the 3-4. The secondary doesn't need touched come on we have Bryd, Whitner, McGee, Wilson, McKelvin....and a few more, its young and came alive this past season.

3) This is what I think should come next FA build up and the Draft. There are many mock drafts and many ideas for trades and FA. However, some things need to be done bring in a DT if we could bring in an experienced DT from FA that would be great. If not we need to get either Larry Foote or Joey Porter, if we got one or the other they would help the depth of a linebacker core that not so depth. Porter would bring a fire to the defense that we could use and Foote brings some good ILB experience that would allow us to move mitchell to the outside on and off and change the look of the middle of the field. if we can't get a LB with good experience it is time to bring in McClain from the draft he will be a star he knows how to read offenses so well. However, If we could try to fill those DT or a LB in FA we would be fine in the draft.

The Bills than can move to making a offense

Bring in a good OT and one duo I would love to see in Buffalo would be Dan Lefevour and a slot WR.....I know that sounds weird but we could use a guy that is proving to work well with a QB, Antonio Brown....thats right the duo out of central michgan its a long shot but at least if lefevour would start he could have a guy that helps him in the transition. Just a thought on offense???

That's my thought on Buffalo and what they should do and what they are doing right. Let me know what you think
