Updated Buffalo Bills Depth Chart
Yesterday, the new regime of the Buffalo Bills began their house-cleaning project - i.e. the purge of Buffalo's existing roster - by releasing seven players that, according to Scout.com's Adam Caplan, failed team physicals. Those early moves - which took place well over two weeks before the start of free agency - got the ball rolling on what could be a very eventful off-season in Western New York.
In releasing those players, Buffalo now has 72 players listed on its active roster at the team website. Well, they've actually got 73 listed, but we already know that RB Bruce Hall is headed to Denver. Of those 72 names, then, the team officially lists 22 as free agents. That leaves 50 players that are currently under contract heading into the 2010 season.
By popular demand, you'll find a depth chart after the jump consisting only of players under contract. Below the depth chart, we've listed the 22 free agents. We will continue to update this projected depth chart as the Bills, led by new GM Buddy Nix, make roster moves through free agency and the draft over the next several months.

I'll have the usual start of FA thread rolling that night
Good times, good times, too bad nothing much happens during it :-P
Nix and Chan, the new Cheech and Chong of the Bills, hopefully they will be as successful in business as they were, and not so much the drug fueled comedy act....

I think the most important question is, how is Roscoe listed ahead of anyone on the WR chart!?

Roscoe Parrish
I anticipate a bigger role for him under Gailey. I think he stays – not much trade value there – and they at least attempt to use his skills at wideout. He still has to sit at 4th or 5th on the depth chart if you’re being prudent about it.
I hope they get the size on the field. Lets see what we have in Johnson and Hardy. training camp and pre season is going to be huge for those guys (as well as many others)

I would like to think Parrish might be used better, but I don’t know, the more games I see of him the more I lose faith in him. During preseason it seemed like every play someone needed to tell him where to be, he doesn’t (and never has) run routes well – and honestly he is a liability to fumble the ball more often than he is to take it to the end zone…
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
Routes
he doesn’t (and never has) run routes well
some routes better than others though. he should never be asked to go downfield and make a catch. that much is clear. but there are more ways to use a wideout with open-field running ability, and Gailey might think along those lines.
Screens/Reverses/Quick hitches (remember that amazing move that RP put on when he caught that quick hitch early in the year, a few plays leter a he fumbled too)
by NorCal BillsFan on Feb 17, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions
Best move I have ever seen Parrish make any time, on offense or returning. The CB left his jock strap on one of the hash marks. And then Parrish went back to sucking…

I know what you are saying and to some extent I agree….but I hate having to keep a guy because he sucks so bad that no other team would give us any thing of any value for him in return.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
not why you'd keep him
you would only keep him if you think you can use his open-field running ability. if you think that’s limited to trick plays and gimmicks then you probably don’t keep him.
I think a lot of the players as FA aren't going to be coming back
I think Schouman, Bryan Scott, Wilson, and Denney have the best chances to come back and guys I think they should bring back.
Incognito, Reed, Cary Harris – I think have good chances for sticking on the team as well.
Ellison, Youboty, J. Scott and Hairston – I see them really only being brought back as camp bodies…
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
As far as Wilson goes, I hope they give him a lucrative, lengthy contract extension. I think he’s a terrific player.

trade whitner
seriously. you are right about Wilson. i kinda hope the Washington rumors are true in a way, because they are a team that likes to overcompensate for the players they want. if that means scoring the bills a 2nd round pick, then i’d say do it.
Who can't seem to really stay healthy, which seems to be a reoccurring theme with our Bills

all from #8 pick. I remember Berman saying “we have our first surprise of the day” and the Bills select…
Marv (well Wilson by hiring Marv) set this franchise back years.

I agree, I think Wilson is great, and I would like to see Scott return as well (I think he is the best run stopping safety we have), and Whitner could leave and I wouldn’t miss him at all, if we can get a 3rd for him from Washington I would call it a done deal.
I think Whitner can and does offer a lot to a team in terms of his versatility, but I think Byrd/Wilson/Scott and just better, especially when put into the roles they excel at.

Yep
A 2nd and you have to pull the trigger – we could get an important piece for a 3-4 in the 2nd – NT, LB etc Heck OT wouldn’t hurt either.
"Fan ?" You want to talk about being a fan of the Bills ? Try getting up at 3 AM every Monday to watch their games knowing they'll likely lose. Do this for 18 years and then call yourself a "fan"
then Whitner has
than
Whitner:
10 games 0 sacks 2 picks 72 total tackles (assists included)
Wilson:
16 games 2 sacks 4 picks 136 total tackles (assists included)

I completely agree, and not only is he a good player on Def but on ST as well, and a good leader – definitely a good piece to build around
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
Well
if he is starting he wont be playing ST as much, if they traded Whitner, signed Wilson long term, I would expect to see Wendling back.

I hope so too.
I love the way he plays and has become a “playmaker” over the past few seasons. I think hes a pretty big fan favorite too.

100% Agree
I am a big Whitner support, but Wilson straight outworked him. I would miss Donte’s leadership though if he were traded.

I think he is a solid starter
At SS. The thing that suprises me is coming out of college as a wr, I wouldn’t espect to see the insticts that he show. The main thing Whitner is lacking.

Afraid Gailey is Going to Pulnder the secondary
I look at this roster and if you’re a new GM you may want to plunder the secondary a bit. This roster is imbalanced talent wise. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they deal a few surprises that way. Not saying they SHOULD. Just saying, I almost expect it.
idk about that
Why create holes or at least question marks on the one strong area of the team? that just makes his job more difficult
by uPitt_BillsFan on Feb 17, 2010 11:24 PM EST up reply actions
what about these moves?
a whitner trade where you were able to score a second or even third round pick from washington.
in this draft, as deep as the second and third rounds seem to be, you’d have to think long and hard about whether or not his versatility outweighed the prospect of getting a NT or a LT or QB at one those spots.
what if he considers whitners versatility too valuable to a unit sure to have injuries and what if Nix is of the opinion that Wilson has had his best season and is peaked in value? what if you manage to score a second round pick for him?
this is the kind of plundering i am thinking about. not about a yard-sale.
Just a guess on my part. He played it in college, and he’s certainly not an option as a 3-4 LB. Maybe he’s the new John Wendling.

Thats very true. And he is an upgrade over Wendling IMO. I wouldnt mind if he swtiched back to safety. Should be more natural for him too.
"Hey ey ey ey"
At least Harris will have some deffensive value and wont be getting all of his playing times on special teams.
The more I see, the les I know.
by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 17, 2010 11:54 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree. I liked Nic Harris's size and the way he moved as a LB (he had the "look"). He can fill out to 245. I see him as a hot prospect at ILB or OLB depending only on where they put him.
I liked him at LB too,
but I dont think he is as good a fit there now. Unless he is a specific role player, coming in on 3rd down as a LB, or coming in for Byrd on certain running downs at SS, moving Wilson or Scott to FS for the play.
by NorCal BillsFan on Feb 17, 2010 6:37 PM EST up reply actions
this is 3-4 that we’re talking about. he’s not a pass rusher, and while he’d be somewhat in coverage he’s too small in height and weight to really matter…better to have a more athletic nickel CB or true SS than him. he can’t play ILB at all – so he’d be a situational pass-coverage specialist on the field for the sole purpose of covering a TE or FB.
pretty useless. ST or bust for him, methinks.

tall /= big. he’s scrawny and got stood up last year quite a bit. he’s listed at 6’2", 232. i highly doubt either of those numbers are correct. poz is listed at 6’1" and he looks taller on the field than harris, not to mention looking way bigger too even though only being listed at 238.

Whither
“Whitner:

for a safty 72 tackles in 10 Games is really solid…. He is not a superstar but he is a solid tackler and a smart leader and has good work ethnics….. I think we can get a good trade if he were to be traded…..
a decent amount of those were ST tackles, if i remember correctly.
don’t forget that ellison had almost 70 tackles in six or seven games. numbers can be deceiving.

This article is probably already written, but I’d be interested in the view on what tenders, if any, should be put on the restricted free agents.
I hope we keep Wilson.heard the Giants are trying to steal him. Maybe he can play WR too…another Sanders?

there is some horrifying depth options on that list. Chris Ellis as a backup OLB? watkins as our RT, now that butler’s gone? AHHHHHH!
EDWARDS THE NEW PISTOL , OWENS THE BAD SLAYER , EVANS THE FLYING METEOR AND COMING SOON THE BEAST MODE THIS IS SPARBUFONIA - abayarde
For the record, I’d say it’d be probable that Bell or (more likely) Meredith would be the backup RT. And as far as Ellis being the backup OLB, it’s tough to anticipate how a position/responsibility change will affect certain players. It’s completely possible that’s what he needed all along or that he’ll get mauled there. It’s all a guessing game at this point. If I personally had to lay odds, I’d say Mitchell would be a good candidate for OLB duty if we pick up another ILB or two during the offseason.
