If we move to 3-4, let's get this guy!
Joey Porter said on Rome is Burning, that if his role was to be limited next year as it was this year, that he would force a trade. This would be the perfect guy to bring in if we switch to 3-4, he has all the attitude that he can back up with great play, and could coach this team on the field. If he isn't getting a lot of playing time, it's possible he could be picked up for decently cheap.
Hell even if we don't go to a 3-4 I would still like to get him, let me know what you think.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

UGGGGHHHH
You lost me at “Joey Porter said…” The guy’s a toilet
It rubs the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again
If the Bills are going to hand out a big FA contract for a position other than QB, they need to give it to somebody who will still be making this team better in 3-5 years when the rest of the roster might be good enough to make a playoff run. Porter is a 33 year old declining player who would probably end up being an overpaid locker room nuisance in a few years.
Buffalo needs to plan on making the playoffs in a few years. They shouldn’t be trying to make it now, they should be planning on making it in the future. Every single move that they make should be about winning the Super Bowl. If a move doesn’t put the Bills closer to winning a Super Bowl in 2012 or 1213, then they shouldn’t make it.

He isn’t going to be a FA, he has 2 years left on a 5 year $32 million dollar contract. I for one don’t think that, that is too much to pay for a guy that has had 26 1/2 sacks the past two seasons. The way I’m looking at it is that he could come in and lead this team if we switched to a 3-4, and teach kids like Maybin, or Poz. I’m not saying it’s a great option, I personally like the guy because of his attitude, and demeanor, he’s a winner, but it could help solidify the LB corps for a few years.

The goal shouldn’t be to solidfy the LBs for a couple years, it should be to have a great group of young LBs and guys in their prime. In two years, Porter will be 35 years old and if he’s already complaining about playing time in Miami, I can’t imagine he’ll settle into a rotational role or be happy with his contract if traded to Bufflalo.
What are the Bills going to accomplish in the next two years? Three years from now, would you rather have a mid round pick in his 3rd season, watch Porter walk away as a FA or have an overpayed, 35 year old Porter?

I understand that we need to build for the future, but not every position on the team is like that. Every team in the NFL signs guys that will only be there for a couple of years. It’s part of the business. Age is really overrated to a point. Porter isn’t a mediocre player, and I think he still has a few years left in him that could help this team in the right direction. You sign him, then you don’t have to worry about a starter for that position for a couple of years, and you fill other needs in the mean time.

Again, y’all are thinking way too big on the potential player acquisitions.

I know Nix said that he likes to build through the draft
But I think that a few very decent RFAs still fit that profile, because Nix also said he likes to reward/keep the guys that he drafted.
Merriman
McNeil
Both were guys that he drafted, so maybe he’d bend the rules to get those guys or at least one of them.
Then I look at the Vick situation and I must ask myself how Buddy Nix felt when the chargers traded away their 1st overall to Atlanta, who ultimately wanted Vick. Nix was director of Pro personnel and probably did not have much say in the matter. The plot thickens even further when you consider the relationship between Dan Reeves and Buddy Nix…
Brian, do not not think that a Merriman or McNeil is a remote possibility? I don’t think that Nix left SD on such bad terms that would prevent him from being able to swing a trade. Especially in the case of Merriman because with Larry English coming on strong and Merriman having essentially two consecutive bad years, I certainly see the potential for a trade.
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
I don’t even consider the ties between Nix and those guys because they’re simply too expensive. Keep in mind that Nix also said the Bills would work the second and third tiers in free agency – the Merrimans and McNeils don’t exactly fit that profile.

Why is money such a concern all of a sudden?
I thought Ralph was willing to do whatever it took. When we were flirting with Shanny & Cowher, the 10M per year was thrown out there to prove to what point Ralph was open and willing to make serious changes. Now it sounds like all that talk was a sham and we are back to being cheap again? I am not suggesting that paying big money is the only way to go about it but why dismiss it right off the bat?
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
I don’t think it’s about money more than it is about a) having a fundamental belief that free agency can’t solve your basic problems, and b) the biggest names are guys in which bidding wars can erupt.

I think Merrimen is definitely 2nd tier FA
He had four sacks in a 3-4 and hasnt been the same since his injury.

Me too.
Merriman at this point is high risk, high reward.
If he came through his injury OK, he should return to form.
If he doesn’t he’ll be out of the league ala Sam Cowart very quickly.
He is not a 1st tier FA due to risk factor.
There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Agree with Brian here.
When the Bills don’t sign any and every big name free agent out there people around here are going to get pissed, but the truth is the Bills were never going to try and sign them….
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
why? see above comment to Brian. Why not even consider it? or try?
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
I’m not saying that the Bills should write off every big name free agent. What I am saying is that every off-season Bills fans start to drool over every big name player that becomes available, and the Bills never even call their agent much less entertain the idea of signing them. And it never fails that Bills fans go nuts and get themselves all crazy wondering why they don’t go get this guy or that guy.
It is easier, for me anyway, to just not even think about guys like Joey Porter and be surprised if ti every does happen.
As to why the Bills don’t….ask Ralph.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
Yeah, totally agree
We need to lower expectations. The high end UFA that we should be thinking of is Ryan Pickett. Chad Clifton would be a semi-miracle this off-season.
Realistic signings: Barry Sims, Larry Foote, Chris Chambers, Jimmy Kennedy, Chike Okeafor, Scott Fujita, Eugene Amano, etc. Solid but no big splashes.
Which, IMO, makes the Vick acquisition more likely. He’s the big splash that would sell tickets.
Pickett
He turned us down last time he was a FA – took the packers deal. I doubt we re-offer to a guy who snubbed us last time – from memory he visited here first and then took pretty similar money later on from Green Bay. Ralph has a memory like an Elephant (and ears to match) Pickett will not even gather a look from the Bills.
"Fan ?" You want to talk about being a fan of the Bills ? Try getting up at 3 AM every Monday to watch their games knowing they'll likely lose. Do this for 18 years and then call yourself a "fan"
Seems to me that Nix is running the show at this point
Nix knows the value of a good NT in the 3-4, and so does Wilson. Passing on Pickett because he didn’t sign with the Bills in the past isn’t going to matter.
I would agree with you
If Ralph wasn’t our owner. The guy has shown the ability to hold a good grudge over the years !!!

The Bills won’t be signing big name free agents (and I wouldn’t even consider Joey Porter as one- he’s overpaid and past it).
Also, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that- I’m all for building through the draft rather than overpaying guys who are past it (or getting that way).
The only big name potential splash I could foresee is at QB and that would be via trade.
He is not a FA, he has two years left on his contract, and I wouldn’t call 26 1/2 sacks over the last two years “past it” . Miami isn’t giving him the playing time he wants, and he said unless that changes he wants out.
"Security comes from earning it--not seeking it." Marv Levy
There’s a reason he isn’t getting the playing time.
You can do better than Porter through the draft- why take someone else’s cast-offs when you build with young, hungry and cheap rookies who just might end up being the next big thing?
hungry and cheap rookies who just might end up being the next big thing
Say it takes a 3rd round pick to get Porter….you have an instant Pro-Bowl LB making an impact. Or what you would like to do, is draft a LB in that position and hope they turn out good. The guy had 9 sacks in 12 games this past year, and he has at least 3 years left in him. I’d rather get a sure thing for a few years than draft a rookie in that spot and hope in three years he is as good as Porter. We have too many holes on this team to try and fill with rookies.

Yeah, see my fanpost re the future of the Bills’ offense- I think Pennington would be a good solution for the bills at QB for at least a year whilst we develop our future starter.
Of the free agent options at the position, he’d probably be my fav right now.
I'm pretty sure I read it
Good post if it’s the one I’m thinking of. But what are your opinions on Croyle and Thigpen, Gailey’s QBs in KC?
by Donald Driver on Feb 2, 2010 4:50 PM EST up reply actions
Thanks- yeah I think Thigpen could be OK, but not sold on Croyle at all.
I liked what Gailey did with Thigpen, but not sure he could be a full time starter for the long haul. Isn’t he with Miami though? Is he tied up or a FA?
For me, Pennington makes the most sense if we don’t want to use up a draft pick trading for a guy (e.g. Troy Smith, Vick, Derek Anderson etc) but I’m not sure it’ll happen.
Although with Cortex here you can’t count out Garcia- wouldn’t be surprised if he signed here at all
This becomes more feasible now that we've hired Whaley
a pro personnel guy who saw Porter’s entire run in Pittsburgh. Although, he was also probably a big part of the decision to let him walk.
...so I guess now I root for chan gailey...
The real question from this post is
Rome is burning is still on? Really?
