"Doesn't your paper ask you to blog these days?" I ask one writer who seems particularly disgusted with my presence.

"You bet your ass they do," he hisses in reply. "But if it weren't for jokers like you, they'd still appreciate my filing three stories per week, instead of asking me to write a blog three times a day."

NFL Combine Diary, Day 1: Where We Learn What's Wrong With Young People - SB Nation's Peter Bean is at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Here's his diary from Day 1 (Thursday).

I'll bite on Bean's words about Gailey Brian

Well amusing and lighthearted (yes i can take a joke about the bills), i just wish there was more substance to his analysis of Gailey. Bean was in the perfect situation to give valuable insight about how Gailey is both similar and different from some of accomplished NFL coaches and GM’s around the league, something that we have a hard time doing covering the Bills at best locally and through other sources. Even if that information is something as small (or important according to Bean) as how Gailey handles the media, That information allows us to better understand our new coach that we are just getting used to. He has an opportunity very few bloggers get, and IMO he should use that time to its fullest advantage. It disappointed me that he took the time to write about Gailey, but only to use that time to joke about the Bills being mediocre.

I know its not really about football, but on target for this post.

by SamD8n on Feb 26, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

I completely agree. I, too, can take a joke, and I can also read criticism. I just wish I knew why he had such a strong opinion on Gailey, since, you know, Bean covers Texas, not Georgia Tech.

Comments on Gailey were unnecessary

If Gailey can bring the Bills UP to mediocrity, he should be given T.O.’s key to the city. A jump up to mediocrity will hopefully remove the “laughingstock” label the Bills seem to have among sports fans. With good reason too I might add. Hopefully the Chix “team” will be at least competetive in the years to come.

The comments were not unnecessary

Your missing my point. I could care less if he takes shots at the Bills. Quite frankly he is absolutely right about the mediocrity that has been pervasive both in Gailey’s past and with the last decade of Bills football. My point is that he is in a pretty unique spot for a blogger, having access to these type of direct interactions with NFL decision makers, yet hes writing nothing of substance about Gailey. I wouldn’t care if he slammed the Bills, as long as he tells me something informative and insightful about the interview with Gailey.

You can’t blame a guy for being angry about his industry’s demise or for the fact that he is being asked to do a lot more than he used to have to do. You can blame the reporter for blaming bloggers directly. The reporter should be mad at his publisher for asking him to do more work and for not monetizing the internet properly.

The reporter should be mad at his publisher for asking him to do more work and for not monetizing the internet properly.

Totally agree with this. If newspapers and magazines want to survive then they are going to need to adapt. Maybe even charge a minimal fee for online using of their work. Although i think that that could be desasterous. All you need is a group of guys that pay for the memberships, copyépaste the article and put them on their own site. Plus they could make profit from the advertising on the site.

The more I see, the les I know.

No, you didn’t. But personally I wouldn’t copy and paste that material. I would link to it and say “this guy has stuff to say about such and such” but not provide a direct quote. Today on the links there’s an ESPN Insider article that I link to but don’t directly quote it.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 27, 2010 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

True enough. My point is that the newspaper/magazine industry is dying because there are so many ways to go around it and get the material for free online, whether it be by legal means or otherwise.

I mean neither you nor I would ever do what I suggested above, but other ppl would. The simple proof lies i the fact that those types of websights already exist.

The more I see, the les I know.

by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 27, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think alot of the old-school writers feel that the best way to get information is through fact-checking and doing research the old way. I believe they see bloggers as stream-of-conscious writers, more akin to short story creative writing wizards.

It really shouldn’t be too much of a jump for them to move from what they know to what they don’t know they know…but it is.

As a writer, I only find a degree of distaste for twitter (and differently, texting). That’s because outside of sports tidbits, I find its purpose to be silly and contributing to the decline in kids’ writing skills.

Now I understand blogging is just the authors opinion of things. But instead of saying what he did about Gailey he could have written about what he actually said in his interview. Maybe that’s why the mainstream media guys don’t like him they give facts while he uses such a good opportunity to tell us his personal feelings about Gailey.

people should be all for giving Roscoe Parrish another chance to be our KR and a WR on the team?

Or Reggie Corner?

Or any other number of mediocre players on the teams roster.

Why is okay to ignore the past of Gailey, but not the past of (insert favorite player to bash because of mediocrity ) here?

Ugh. I can’t believe I’m getting into this.

I haven’t seen anything prevalent in which people are forgetting anything about Gailey. It’s more about the spirit of “wait and see” than anything – and that’s the only logical stance to take here, whether you loved, hated or were completely neutral about the hiring.

I just fail to understand why, time and again, this has to devolve into a pissing match. There are two different approaches to “waiting and seeing.” No one’s really ever disagreeing, and it’s MONUMENTALLY FRUSTRATING to sort through hundreds of pissing-match comments like this type of discussion is turning into.

then the “anytime a writer says something negative about a Bills player or coach than automatically we bash him and say he doesn’t know anything” is getting REALLY old…..

These writers have opinions. And it’s not that radical to figure out that the Bills haven’t been good in awhile and they may make some bad decisions…..crazy, I know. But that doesn’t mean the writer that points this out is “out to get us” or stupid.

Oh no, poor newspaper guy

He might have to write more than 3 whole stories a week! Brian writes nearly that in a day, and its not the typical fluff garbage that you get in the papers.

This guy is living in the past, like most newspaper people unfortunately. I’ve heard stories about the newspaper guys in NYC back in the day. They’d write a story every day or two, then spend the rest of their days at a restaurant eating lunch and dinner, and finishing off a bottle of whiskey. That is tough to let go I guess, but things have changed and these older school guys need to adapt or move on.

Not all news guys are like this

I’m on the web side of journalism myself, but after interning at a few papers and having many friends still work in print I can tell you that it is about 50/50. For one this newpaper guy has it easy. At many small papers reporterw write 3-4 stories a day. Mainly because the papers are so small that they can only have no more than a dozen reporters on staff. But things are changing. When I graduated J-School two years ago the programs were changing and all the students taking basic news classes had to include multimedia with every piece they do and keep a constant blog/twitter account going while doing it. Hopefully once more people with these skills come out and come into the work force more people will start seeing blogging as a true from of journalism as it should be.

if bloggers have a consistent audience there needs to be a business model created to support them well enough to commit the time and resources to investigtaive jounalism (sports jounalism in this case) and developing contacts within the world there reporitng on … if not there is a have and have not class of reporting one being the news reporters with access and the other being the bloggers without access
