Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

New Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey successfully recruited DE Derrick Morgan to Georgia Tech. Now, the 6'4", 275-pound junior is widely considered the best end prospect in the 2010 NFL Draft. MockingTheDraft.com has the goods on a prospect that should be on every Bills fan's radar.

I read the report earlier, and physically he sounds like a more NFL ready version of Maybin. However the largest part that scares me, is the fact that going up against solid T he didn’t do nearly as well. Not to say it can’t be corrected, and where he is probably going to be taking I think the Bills will be better off going in another direction.

agreed

I think this will be somewhat of a “test” for the new regime. We have more immediate and pressing needs besides DE that require attention. WIll they address those needs and leave Morgan on the board? Or, will Gailey revert to “someone he knows” ala his coaching hires?
Chances are Morgan will not be there after we’ve addressed our immediate needs.

Hopefully, Gailey and Nix will not vary from a BPA or need-BPA philosophy just to get someone with whom Gailey is familiar.

And with the ninth pick, the Buffalo Bills select...

“We have more immediate and pressing needs besides DE that require attention.”

I guess you’re right, but some of us have been crying for defensive line help for a couple of years now, and I’m not sure that either Maybin or Ellis are up to it once Schobel retires. And the Bills really need someone who can get in Tom Brady’s face consistently.

That said, QB & OT are probably bigger needs, and LB is as big a need.

Get the Bills back to the big game!

the needs list is long and DL is in there. It’s just bad timing in that we need #9 and #41 for other things and Morgan should/will be gone in between I believe. That’s where ithe test comes in. Will they be true to what is most urgent or not?

There is no such thing as “most urgent” for this team. They need help everywhere except CB. They should draft their highest rated player, regardless of position, at each pick.

The Bills aren’t making the playoffs next year, or the year after that. They shouldn’t be considered with “urgent” needs.

Bill Polian and AJ Smith are gone, so there's not the usual balance between "sane" and "others." Ralph has mentally checked out since 1994. It's a very dangerous time. The coalition for reason is extremely weak.

We need a lot of talented warm bodies here

Any chance the Bills trade down from #9 to pick up an extra pick or two?

Given the upcoming uncapped season, it may make sense for a small-market team like Buffalo to trade down.

New Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey successfully recruited DE Derrick Morgan to Georgia Tech.

To be more accurate, the Bills new Outside Linebackers Coach Giff Smith recruited Morgan and served as his (D-line)coach for his 3 seasons at GT. I’d say Smith looks like a good hire.

Now if we could just swap Maybin for Morgan…

No matter how bad Giff and Chan

would want Morgan, I can’t see it happening. If we switch to a 3-4 hes a bit large for OLB and probably better suited to a 4-3 although his skill set (ie explosiveness and technique) would be nice in a 3-4. Other than that, Chan can’t possibly justify taking him unless the Bills address QB and LT in free agency or by trade. Which is possible.

A defender with the #9 pick could be a smart investment in long term success simply because the defense is so much closer to being a complete and ready NFL unit than the offense. If a switch to a 3-4 is imminent a pick up like Rolando McClain in the draft and Ryan Pickett in free agency would give us a full 11 starter defensive unit of:

McGee – Byrd – Whitner – McKelvin
Maybin – McClain – Poz – C. Ellis / K. Mitchell
Stroud – Pickett – Williams / S. Johnson

If we stick with a 4-3 and Morgan is the pick at #9 we’d have to pick up a free agent LB like Kirk Morrison or Thomas Howard (I can’t see Oakland resigning Seymour and keeping them both) but we’d still complete our defense:

McGee – Byrd – Whitner – McKelvin
Poz – McClain – Mitchell
Maybin – Stroud – Williams – Morgan

Either way, in both scenarios we’d need to get a QB and LT through FA or trade because any QB in the second round or later couldn’t be put in right away and same for any LT.

I see defender as a possible but relatively improbably scenario at 9.

Pass

He’s a good kid but we have much larger needs to handle then drafting another early DE. We should be worried about fising our O-Line and getting a QB, and adding a starting LB. Deffensive End should be a secondary need behind those positions.

O.K.

But don’t we have a #9 pick from last yr. at DE? I think his name is Maybin…maybe he can play?

Morgan will make a very solid LDE

Just for the record, whether or not Aaron Maybin pans/panned out, we’d still need another DE to replace Kelsay. This guy has the size.

With the solid OT prospects in the 2nd round, we could forgo OT in the 1st (though I’d be just as happy with the Bills selecting Bulaga)

Draft Eric Decker in the 2nd!!! Eric Decker > Golden Tate

We’re going 3-4 now, getting someone to replace Kelsey is irrelevant because he’ll be gone anyways.
