2010 RT already on the roster

Am I the only one that thinks our 2010 starting RT may already be on the roster?  No, not Bell, Meredith, or Scott.

Star-divide

Am I the only one that thinks our 2010 starting RT may already be on the roster?  No, not Bell, Meredith, or Scott.  I believe it might be Andy Levitre.  He was arguably our best offensive lineman last year.  He played OT in college and the rumor when he got drafted was that he was athletic enough to be a RT in the NFL.  Some even thought he might be our LT when we released Langston Walker prior to the start of last season.  And think about it... it's a lot easier to find a starting guard/impact interior lineman later in the draft than it is to find a starting tackle.  I think there are countless examples of teams plugging in a 4th or 5th round pick at guard as a rookie with good results.

Perhaps our lineup looks like this:

LT - Rookie (Bulaga or A Davis)

LG - Rookie (A big run blocking 4th/5th Round pick)

C - Hanger

RG - Incognito

RT - Levitre

In addition, if Wood is completely healthy he could slide in at starting LG, C, or RG which would give us even more depth.  Also, we should sign a veteran FA to be a backup right tackle (Pashos, Hicks etc...) and have Bell slotted as the backup LT.  Suddenly our Oline isn't a HUGE glaring weakness anymore.  Best of all, it frees up our early draft picks to select other need areas (NT, OLB, QB etc...)

What do you all think?

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Would much rather have Levitre at LG especially considering our LT will probably be a rookie.

I like Bell at RT.

I feel Levitre is better suited for guard at the NFL level.

I honestly think Meredith has a good shot at being our starting RT next season. Call me crazy. Your probably right. lol

No, I don't think your nuts....

I’ve posted before regarding Meredith, he started 4 games, had no penalties called on him, and was responsible for 1 1/2 sacks… Not bad at all for a rook who we signed off someone else practice squad….

I kind of think so too.

I think it’s going to be stretch for Buffalo to use two premium draft picks on offensive linemen after having already done so in 2009. I think they need to add one rookie tackle and give Bell or Meredith a shot to start because they need to address other positions as well (most notabvly QB and NT). If I had to bet on an opening day starting RT, I’d guess Meredith because I was more impressed with his brief play last year than with Bell’s…you have some company in crazy-ville.

Just say no...to Trent Edwards at QB.

Levitre’s not an NFL tackle. Too short, arms too short, not long enough to handle speed rushers. He could get you by in a pinch, but part of good coaching is putting your players in the best spot to excel, and for Levitre, that’s clearly at guard.

well im pretty sure he ended the year as the RT, yes?

So leaving him where he is……….would put him at Tackle

hmmmmmm....Fitz ended the year as the startig QB and Wood ended the year on IR, so is that where you would start them too?

Obviously I meant LG.

The line has to solidify at some point

Offensive linemen can be switched around, but each time it takes some more time to get that group to gel.

Interesting

It’s an interesting thought that hadn’t really considered, but in all honesty, since Levitre seemed to get better as the season wore on, my preference would be to leave him where he is. He did an adequate job at LT when he filled in briefly, but by the end of the year, he looked like an upcoming LG; I’m hoping he continues to get better there.

I don’t think this putrid offensive line can be fixed in one offseason. I’m hoping Buffalo re-signs Incognito to play RG and when Wood returns from injury, I’d start an combination of Levitre, Incognito, and Wood on the interior with Hangartner dropping back to the super-sub status he filled in Carolina.

I’d keep those four interior linemen and make sure to draft a tackle in the 1st three rounds this year to be a projected starter and add figure on adding another one next year. I’d let Bell and Meredith fight for a starting spot for 2010 and see if one of them can emerge as a true starter or at worst, as a swing tackle going forward.

Also, I think Kirk Chambers is the worst offensive lineman Buffalo has awarded playing time to in the 20 plus years I’ve followed the team. I see no way a new coaching staff will keep him around past minicamp.

Just say no...to Trent Edwards at QB.

Chambers...

Really, that bad???

Bennie Anderson, Tutan Reyes, and various others were pretty pathetic…

Nice

Excellent names for any such discussion. I’ll add Jerry Crafts and Corey Hulsey for consideration, but in my opinion, Chambers was the worst of all the bunch.

Hmmm

I never thought Chambers was as bad as any of these guys mentioned. Sure, he was nothing more than a mediocre 3rd or 4th tackle, but I haven’t seen too many players play worse than Tutan Reyes did here….

Corey Hulsey. Nice ….

The worst part about Chambers was that he was pretty decent in 2008 before being so awful last year.

I think Bennie Anderson’s attempt at pass blocking is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen from a Bills OL player who received a considerable amount of time that I can recall. Gotta throw Bill Conaty’s name out there since he played next to Hulsey, making them arguably the worst duo I’ve ever seen attempt to block for this organization.

With Incognito

being a decent pickup I think it could be done. I obviously think Levitre is better at guard but with Wood presumably coming back, and Incognito being much better than expected and with a new LT I think the line might improve overall

young guys & coaching

I like to think that either Meridith or Bell could be coached into a viable starter at a T position. The prior offensive coordinators have been anything but top notch.(Fairchild, Schonert & Van Pelt) These guys have the ability, they just need competent professional coaching. I was not impressed with the above mentioned coordinators schemes and look forward to see if the new guys are any better at running an offense..

If it ain't broke don't try and fix it!

Andy was one of the few bright spots on the Oline last year, leave him there!
Besides, Brian is absolutely right – Levitre’s arm length is too short to play Tackle effectively.

Levitre/wood/Cogs Now that’s an interior line!

I think we can pick up a FA to compete with Bell at RT

Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...

Exactly. You move journeyman vet types around to fill the holes in the roster and not 2nd year players with pro bowl potential. I think it’s more important for the Bills to develop a couple great offensive lineman then to find a way to field 5 decent guys next year. Levitre could be a complete stud at LG and the Bills desperately need that.

I see little point in robbing Peter to pay Paul. Buffalo has a good LG in Levitre. Why move him to a position where he may or may not succeed? Pro Bowl tackles have come from rounds other than the first—CHIX just has to find starting quality talent in the first 3-4 rounds.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

Anthony Davis is overrated

Way overrated and should NOT be a top 10 pick. Right now I would be fine with any tackle besides him, to me he has bust written all over him, which probably means our front office will take him. He is also considered a project.

Overrated, shouldn't be a top 10 pick, bust, project

Why do you feel this way about him?

to me he came out of nowhere and fast. He looked very, very poor his first few games until he got himself in better shape. once in better shape he looked a lot better. His desire and love for the game are big questions. He reminds me a lot of jason peters. The combine doesn’t mean a whole lot, but he didn’t have a good one and probably had the worst combine out of the “top” tackle crop this year. He just hasn’t done anything to warrant a top 10 pick in my opinion. Okung, Bulaga, and Campbell have. I wouldn’t have said this about Campbell but he absolutely blew people away at the combine. The guy ran a 4.8 40 yard dash, faster than our very own Aaron maybin ran it (at the combine) looked great in the mirror drills and physically looked great. Mayock said he was the best looking LT he has ever seen. This guy could be on roids, it seems every guy that comes out of maryland is an absolute freak, V. Davis and Merriman im referring too.

RT

I like it, your right Livitre would be very good at RT. Wood at LG I fully expet him to be ready for the season

Bell

I think Bell can be good a good LT…We can pick up a RT and have a steady line….if everyone stays healthy….lets hope the new strength and conditioning coaches work their magic.

by reed83 on Mar 2, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions

Bell is not horrible..... and does have the natural athletic ability to be a good OT

He is inexperienced at the position and needs more time to develop. Bell never should have even seen the field last season…..he wasn’t ready, IMO.

he went offsides on almost every play and if you do that you’re just dumb, which he is. Kids in pee-wee football go offsides less than him. He hurt our team a lot by doing that. Bell is a project and not a starter. Could he be a good LT one day…maybe, but he is not a viable starter right now in this league and neither is hangarter, who spends most of his time on his back as a center. Right now you’re only good lineman are Levitre and Wood and imo Incognito is solid. right there you have your core inside down, moving wood to center. Now we just need two tackles…starting tackles.

by csc06258 on Mar 2, 2010 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

Bell

I won’t attack Bell’s “smarts”. Your right Bell is a project, who is projected to be a strong link in our offensive line. Hang hung in there, he lived up to expectations. Some think Bell could anchor RT, I agree. We could use a “starter” at LT. But hey, that’s what the draft/ FA is for! Stop picking on Bell :)

by buffalobacker on Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

I guess the difference is

I attribute Bell jumping offsides to him being not ready to play yet and not because he is dumb. To each his own….

A married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!

by Joe P. on Mar 3, 2010 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

Bell

So you call Bell dumb but think Incognito is one of just a few good linemen we have?

he went offsides on almost every play

What? Seriously, what?

Just because the kid wasn’t ready to play doesn’t mean he is dumb. It’s not his fault he was thrust into the starting lineup before he had gotten a single NFL snap in his life. Not having any experience and playing in front of huge crowds for the first time in his life is more to why he picked up false starts than his intelligence is. If him being “so dumb” was such a detriment, how did Jason Peters develop into one of the better LT’s in the league? Bell had a 20 on the wonderlic test, Peters had what, a 6?

What exactly does “go offsides” mean anyhow?

Also, please explain how you know the Bell is so dumb. You’re basing an opinion of his intelligence on penalties he committed during his first career NFL games? That’s just ridiculous.
