Offensive Line Comparison
So to give the free agency/QB talk a rest for a bit...i decided to look up some numbers, to compare the Bills lines from the Mularkey and Jauron Regime, the the winning bills of 90-95. I took the two most important stats to compare lineman, average yards per rush and total sacks given up. Granted i did not take into account the amount of penalties, which is a major drawback but a young line will learn with experience.
Year YPC Sacks
90 4.3 27
91 4.7 35
92 4.2 29
93 3.5 31
94 3.8 41
95 3.8 32
04 3.9 38
05 3.8 43
06 3.7 47
07 4.0 26
08 4.2 38
09 4.4 46
So The young 09 line (with 91 starts compared to the TN TItans who led the league in rushes per carry had 507 starts) was fifth in the league with 4.4 yards per carry, and only gave up 9 more sacks than our highly priced 08 line; and there were plenty of injuries along the way, losing most of the starters. The numbers say the BIlls are a good rushing team, but need help in the pass blocking dept, the QB got hit 103 times last year, which was 2nd worse only to the jags. I know i was trying to get away from Free Agency talk, but que Cornell Green to help out with Butlers loss; Green is a very good pass blocking tackle ( i know the penalties look high, 10 in 8 games, but he had 3 in the first and last games of the season, so you take that out its 4 penalties in six games...not so bad huh), so this could be a good move for some veteran pass blocking tips/ leadership. If the young guys like bell, wood, and levitre could pick it up, along with a young left tackle in the draft (assuming bell will slide into the right tackle slot in the next few years), the 9 million they spent to sure up this part of the line is well done, for just the experience and tips alone. I like the move and after some thought into it, i think it is a good step in the right direction. This is a young, very talented line that could anchor for years to come, with good coaching and smart moves by OBD. Any thoughts anyone??
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I know i was trying to get away from Free Agency talk, but que Cornell Brown to help out with Butlers loss; brown is a very good pass blocking tackle
I’d suggest you correct your colors……..
:-)
But I agree with your premise… As a young line, they were pretty good, though inexperienced at run blocking… It was in the pass block dept however that it killed us, and a couple QBs in the process…
Good post, I agree. Now PLEASE draft a LT!
IF that happens, we have a great young line for years to come.

Very nice info. I would have no problem if the bills went with 2 OTs in the first two rounds. In fact, call me crazy, but if we draft bulaga in round 1 and saffold in round 2, id put bulaga on the right and saffold on the left. Our line would be set for the next 8 years. Id much rather follow the jets mold of building the line then drafting a qb. Unless we can get serious value with our picks I say we bolster our o-line first and foremost.

Try this Scenario
Trade D.Whitner to hoe town Cleveland and our 2011 2nd round pick fo rthier numbe rone this year.
Draft B.Bulaga LOT Iowa
Our #1 Pick Draft R.McClain ILB Alabama
Our #2 Pick Draft C.Wootton DE Northwestern or T.Cody DT Alabama
Our #3 Pick K.Calloway ROT Iowa
Our #4 Pick A.Ulatoski ROT to ROG Texas
2010 Bills Offensive Line
LOT/B.Bulaga LOG/A.Levitre OC/G.Hangartner ROG/A.Ulatoski ROT/K.Calloway
E.Wood back to OC when he comes back from his serious injury.
A.Ulatoski is converted from ROT to ROG.
You have to get McClain because he is a stud for the 3/4 defense.
201 Bills 3/4 Linebackers
OLB/A.Maybin ILB/P.Posluszny ILB/R.McClain OLB/C.Kelsay
Bench Rotation: K.Mitchell, K.Ellison
Mitchell would be starting for Kelsay without question. If we draft an OT in the first round this year, then we are almost guaranteed to get a QB in next years draft. And I would be willing to bet that we need all of our picks to get the guy we need. (Locker, Mallet)
QB
Get the team right now.
Build this year and next year and then be readyu in 2013.
Matt Barkley of USC is the QB we should target in 2013 draft.
OK maybe Mitchell over Kelsay but remember we need a rotation of seven per game.
Mitchell and Kelsay are both getting up there in age so rotation is important.
Trading D.Whitner, M.Stroud, K.Williams, A.Schobel and R.Parrish with future picks is not a bad way to go to get talent high picks this year.
Waiting every year for your silly draft just waist time.
Sometimes you need to go after it in all in one year.
D.Whitner and a future pick is worth sending to Cleveland because they need a FS plus he is from there. We are not going to signn him next year when he ready for a second contract. So get rid of him now add a little to th epot and get a new talent in B.Bulaga of need.
This is the problem with the Bills Mgmnt. They think small and always have.
I guess getting value for Whitner is not a bad idea if we decide not to re-sign him. Still dont like trading a high pick next year though.
In theory it would be nice to draft all we need in one year but that is pretty much never the case. It is going to take at least 3 years to be competitive with the AFC East alone.
Jets/Sanchez
the Jets went after it by Sanchez.
Waiting every year for picks is a waist of time because today F/A is so open every year.
You have to go and get to reload fast.
Not think small like the organization does.
D.Whitner is from Ohio St, Cleveland area.
We are not going to sign him to money next year when we can get players to replace him with talent.
So instead of waiting until next year get rid of him by adding more value with future picks to get a high talented pick this year.
This is called subtraction for additon and talent now.
It works just have to have brain power and some savy to pull it off.
Not Really
Matt Barkley of USC in three years would be the guy to get.
Trading future picks now with players that we need or fit on this team is necessary.
The draft is strong and deep this year.
Getting a number one and a additional number two this year could have this team in the playoffs next year with T.Edwards along with looking to 2012 for Barkley.
Don’t write to me about California quarterbacks like Jim Kelly would say fooolishly.
He went to a school call Quarterback U. and no quarterback ever came from there and won a Super Bowl.
So should we say the same thing he says about California quarterbacks in regards to Miami U.
T.Edwards could be the man if he gets a solid coach and a offensive line.
Bill Walsh before he died said this guy Edwards put in the right position could be a solid quarterback.
Now I think Bill Walsh on a bad day was far more smarter about football then J.Kelly ever will be.
The Bills lose four Super Bowls with Kelly because they did not stop the party before the games for four years.
His leadership was not there when it was needed at the big game.
I have no issue with quarterbacks from California. I just think Locker or Mallet would be a good get in next years draft. Although I do think there is merit to the argument that warm weather quarterbacks struggle in cold weather.
