Sorry again, folks. Had another post disappear. Lesson learned: pre-compose all posts offline and save.

In the meantime, take this Sunday off to fill out your brackets and watch this lovely highlight video of Clemson RB C.J. Spiller, with whom the Bills will work out prior to the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bracket

Brian… Will you be establishing a Rumblings on-line bracket competition, like on Yahoo! or something similar… We need something since OBD has decided that free agency is an over-rated method for filling out a roster ;-)

I got nothing.

Kurupt will be orchestrating it, but yes, it’s happening. :)

Ha

Notice the lack of venomous replies re lack of FA activity now Jason ?

Apparently the magic number is somewhere between 3 and 10 (days with hardly any FA activity)

Some might say you went off early – me, I say you were just ahead of your time !

Bear with me here

First of all I know its a highlight video, so obviously only his best plays are included. However, his ball carrier vision and his acceleration once he finds that seam reminds me of Chris Johnson. I’m not saying he’s Chris Johnson, b/c he hasn’t even taken an NFL snap yet so we won’t know for a few years exactly how good he will be. But I couldn’t help but think of Johnson and the way he ran this past year with patience behind the O-line waiting for the blocks to develop and then find that gear that makes him look like a Ferrari among a bunch of Civics when I saw this video.

At the very least it got me pumped for football season.

Go ahead and compare

Someone will be getting one hell of a running back.

This is like dumping a new puzzle from it's box. Now let's start putting the peices together. I guess this is what we all asked for.

And the soundtrack is crazy!! I don’t think we need Spiller but I’d hate to meet him twice a year.

by telka on Mar 14, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

WOW!

I don’t know, if he’s there maybe we should take him… OT be damned! I never realized this, but it seems like he has 3 gears on the field, coast waiting for the blocking scheme to develop, hitting the hole where he’s super low to the ground making his center of gravity rediculously low and him impossible to tackle, and flat out-just an insane top gear where he blows everyone off the field! For DBs it’s called closing speed. What’s so crazy is that his 2nd gear is faster than most RBs top gear and he can still juke, jive, stop on a dime to make people miss and change direction and be at that “3rd” gear in the blink of an eye! He’s not Barry Sanders freakish but he does look like LT with a Chris Johnson top end.

What ya think? Take him at 9 if all of the top 3 OTs are gone and then trade Marshawn and a 5th to attempt to get back into the 1st for one of the Williamses (DT or OT) and then take Cody or best available OT in the second. Possible?

by superchops on Mar 14, 2010 3:21 PM EDT reply actions

ummm

Why would we get a 1st rounder for Marshawn and a 5th ?

Marshawn is at best a late 3rd at this point. So a late 3rd and our early 5th don’t go close to making a 1st. We’d be lucky to move into the late 2nd for that package – sorry to burst your bubble.

OMG... this guy is crazy-awesome. Can catch and run 100 mph...

..outside the tackles. Didn’t see much up the middle. Third and 1? Can’t dance there.
Is this guy the next Reggie Bush (overpaid bust) or Brian Westbrook (longtime productive player with the Eagles)? The next Chris Johnson?
I’m really torn right now and don’t know what to think.
Think-think-think (damn I wish we had a good line) think-think-think (wish-we had a real QB) think-think-think. Okay, I love the guy, but we cannot do it with our huge needs.
If this guy goes to a team with a line and QB, its game on. He will tear up the NFL. But he won’t with us. He would be a killer in Cincy, Houston, San Diego, or God forbid… the Patriots. I would not want to face this dude for the next ten years.

bush

Wasn’t really a bust – he’s a game changer – just drafted too high at #2. If he was a mid first rounder he’s no bust.

So is a Reggie Bush clone at #9 a bust ? That’s the question. I think we have bigger needs – but he would not be the worst pick in (Bills) history (That goes to Mike Williams or Erik Flowers – hopefully forever !)

Name two players on Barry Sanders line?

Sometimes a great RB can make the line, and over time an average to slightly above average line taht evolves around the back, will seem like the greatest

Something to think about!

Ok Folks I’m a long time reader on Rumblings, but first time poster. We all know we have many holes to fill, and running back is really low on our list but, I really think this kid is something special. If he’s there when we pick I really think he will be hard to pass up. Also given OBD lack of activity during free agency, it looks like Nix truly believes on building a team through the draft. That being the case we’re looking at 2 to 3 years of actually putting a team on the field that can be considered a contender. So when draft day comes along and we’re on the clock the BPA may just be Spiller. Maybe he’s worth a shot, we’ll have to wait and see what Nix/Gailey think.

Welcome

to Rumblings.

It’s a good point – however at #9 there is very likely still a top player at a position of need. QB, OT, MLB, WR etc etc

Surely a Clausen, Bradford, McClain, Dez Bryant, Okung, Davis, (or a couple of other OT’s) is still there with similar value and more positional need.

I could understand if we traded down to 15 or that area and he was still there – then maybe his value outweighs the guys at the need positions – I just dont see how the top guys at our need positions are all gone by #9. If they are then someone like Eric Berry is also likely still there – then you have ammunition to trade down.

Spiller could be special, but just don’t see how he could be supreme value at #9 compared to other guys there.

Well, if the guys we desperately need are gone (Suh, McCoy, Williams, Bulaga, Claussen and Bradford) I think he we would be a great BPA pickup

Heck, we could bring back the Wing T formation, or run the Georgia Triple Option with him, Bong Mode and Freddy. That would be pretty awesome. But on a serious note, I think that if he is there at #9 and the guys above are no longer around, we need to seriously consider taking him, trading the pick for him, or maybe seeing if McClain is there to nab.

Honestly, if we got McClain or Spiller at #9 (if no trade down in the above scenario can be finagled) I would be fine with either guy.

Nix and Chan, the new Cheech and Chong of the Bills, hopefully they will be as successful in business as they were, and not so much the drug fueled comedy act....

assuming

Suh, Bradford, Clausen, McCoy, Davis, Okung, Berry, Bulaga are gone then wouldn’t Dez Dryant make more sense ? or McClain ? Both are bigger needs and one could argue they are similarly gifted for their positions.

Wel Best did run faster in the combine

But there is more to speed than a 40 time – elusiveness and moves are a part of that.

Don’t see anyone going for Best at #9 – so why Spiller ? McCluster has the moves of Spiller (but not the 40 time) and he could be gotten in the 3rd – oh yeah he returns kicks too – and has played WR.

I just don’t see RB being worthy of the 9th spot for us. I’ve said this before – but " Early 1st round RB’s are for the team that already has everything" We are not in that category. If there is a position where you can get a starter (and a good one) after round 1 EVERY YEAR – it’s RB.

True

2007 was a disaster for all RB’s not named Peterson. It was however clearly the exception to the rule.

However, you are spot on – I cannot in any way defend the R2 – R7 RB draft class.

Again

And I’ll say it again. He’s same speed, and size. Spiller can catch and K/R, making him more versatile.

by buffalobacker on Mar 15, 2010 3:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya

My point is why get a player like CJ in the first Rd, when in my opinion you can get a better player in the 2nd Rd like Best? I know your saying he can have a more varied roll to the team as a KR etc, but that to me is second to how well a player runs the ball and the yards he accumulates over the course of a season.

It’s how fast you run in pads and away from the other guys in pads that matters most. I’ve often felt they should time these guys in full uniforms to get an idea how they truly perform.

In Spillers case

I feel like his game film speaks for it’s self. There’s very few people on this planet that Spiller can’t run away from in full pads.

by mob16151 on Mar 15, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Right. If I was putting together a team, i’d take the guy who’s faster then the others with pads on. He might not be the fastest in the blocks, but he’d be the one to lose the least amount of speed in uniform. There’s so many players who run like the wind in spandex, but as soon as you put heavy plastic under it, they start to bog down.

Why would Buffalo take a running back in round one?

It’s like the one position we don’t need to draft. All we need is a decent third guy, which can be gathered up at any given point in free agency.

It goes back to the game changer thing.

And as much as I like our current corps of runningbacks, there not really what I would call gamebreakers. Especially since apparently they couldn’t break a 30 yard run to save there life. (And yes I’m exaggerating there, but not by much)

by mob16151 on Mar 15, 2010 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

There are plenty of reasons to take C.J. Spiller with their top pick. The biggest being how awesomely talented he appears to be.
