2nd Annual Buffalo Rumblings NCAA Tournament Challenge

Hey everyone,

Welcome to the second edition of the Buffalo Rumblings NCAA Tourney Challenge.  Last year's inaugural event was won by ESPN user ahizzle 30 1, who never came forward to gloat or show his face (I finished 3rd, by the way :) ).  This year we will be using the Yahoo platform, which is just as easy to use.

Just like last year, I have set up a Group for all Rumblers to enter their picks and compete against their fellow Bills fans.

Star-divide

To sign up and fill out a bracket, you will need to do the following:

1. Click on this link to take you to the Yahoo Tourney Pick'Em.  The direct link to the Rumbling's Group page can be found here, although I'm not sure you will have access to it until you are actually signed up.

2. Click the button in the middle of the page that says "Join a Group". (I believe you can create your entry first and then join the Group, as well)

3. Make sure you are signed into Yahoo.

4. When asked for the Group ID #, please enter 82466. The password you will need to enter is "bills" with no quotations.

5. Please be sure to use your Rumblings handle as your Entry name so we can all identify each other. Friends of Rumblers are also more than welcome.

6. Fill out your bracket before Thursday at Noon!

I hope everyone will play, regardless or whether you are a college hoops fan or who you root for.  We had 71 participants last year, and I hope we double, triple or even quadruple that number this year.

PLEASE BE SURE TO REC THIS IN ORDER TO KEEP IT AT THE TOP OF THE FANPOST SECTION

Good luck to everyone.

Go Syracuse!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

You got a new player in this dance

I’m always a Big East fan with my brackets, I always love me some Cuse but verse all you Cuse fans I gotta go a differnt route, prolly Notre Dame, jk, ok. Anyway I need another day before I pick the one of three teams I think could win it all, I hate going Rock Chalk Jahawk but they’re so damn good. I don’t trust the frosh for Kentucky but they’re also damn talented. Also how the hell did Duke get the # 3 overall seed and get a damn walk through their regional, WVU got screwed.

I sure hate basketball.

I am officially the worst basketball player in WNY so I never liked it. Pretty good when I played Hockey and Football, especially Hockey, but pathetic at basketball, never became a fan of it. Good luck to those who like this sort of thing.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

I think ND has a good chance to go far

Assuming they stick with what has gotten them there, defense and controlling the tempo. If they can get by a tough opener against ODU, they’ll have an extremely tough game against Baylor. I think Baylor is a final four contender, so that’s a game where ND really needs to keep the score down and control the game. Baylor will want to run and gun. Unfortunately for the Irish, they have a really tough first weekend.

If they go back to Harangody and his 20 ugly shots a game, they’ll be done against ODU. That was such a terrible way to try winning, and it’s amazing it took Brey so long to figure it out. Better late than never I guess….

Somehow I have the magical touch and usually get at least 2 of the final 4 right. :D

I was in the top 8-10 last year.....

As long as Duke doesnt have one of its normal one bad shooting game and their done tourney…..I should be okay.

Probably went a lil too far out on a limb and put Cornell in the Sweet 16……but those guys are awesome.

Sorry for the Yahoo part

Last year, we used ESPN. Signing up for that requires an ESPN account as well. If there was a Tourney Challenge on SBN, it would have been perfect. Yahoo was the next best thing since many users here use their Yahoo login credentials.

Worried?

I’d love to see Izzo coach that team to a major upset. I think MSU kind of stinks this year, but Izzo is such a great coach that he gets so much out of his teams in March.

Kansas is pretty damn good though. It will be tough to take them down prior to Indy.

I kid. I root for Cuse cuz they’e local and all my friends are Cuse friends…but I do enjoy giving Cuse fans crap for early exits (especially since I experience it soo much as a Duke fan). When I started to watch college bball as a young’n, Duke was always on…so I always watched them. Plus, loved the atmosphere at Cameron and the focus on defense and three-point shooting.

haha that absolutely killed my bracket (had Cuse going all the way),

since Melo amd Hakim Warrick led them to the 2003 title, I had a rush of picking the teams with one of the best freshmen in the country in my brackets (Durant, Beasley) and always lost. So, now that isn’t the factor it used to be for me, I’m also always heavy on the BE, I feel they’re the best confrence and should do well in the dance. This stems from me always being a Notre Dame and Syracuse fan. Honestly I love the Cuse, not sure why, maybe the only good team around Buffalo growing up. Never my dads alma mater UB, they werent even div 1 when I was younger, and it’s funny but in South Buffalo and the greater Buffalo area kids have hockey nets and play that, now living in Indiana for some years all I see is basketball hoops in about every driveway. That’s just funny to me the way sports are so regional, I guess Indiana is known for BBall, Hoosiers, and having 8 out of 10 of the largest gyms in the country, for the BBall teams. At least both places love football rabidly, that is more important to me my list of favortie sports (playing, watching) Football, Basketball, Golf, Baseball, Soccer, and lastly Hockey (i know, I’m the only person from Buffalo that isn’t a die hard Sabres fan, I follow them but rarely get to watch their games and I see more of Patrick Kane on Impearials Pizza walls than on the local channels in the South Bend/ Chicagoland area. Anyway back to the topic, I got Cuse going down to K St. And went with a not so happy champ for me the Jayhawks over WVU.

I got K st. and Nova in the final 4

the only thing i dont like is that it matches up (my bracket) on one side Kansas vs Kansas St. (2 Big 12) then West Virginia vs Villanova (2 BE teams OBV.) that’s the only things that kinda bother me but I like the guards for KU and Nova, then the amazing DeSean Butler all I have to say is WOW, then the total tough scrappy team in K St. At least we have some different picks, I hate having brackets that all look alike. Good Luck to all

The guy is just so clutch.

I know you’re not the biggest G Town fan from what I’ve read of your and Brians post but Greg Monroe is also great but not nearly as clutch as Butler. Back to Butler abyways, I can’t believe it now after the BE tourny that he actually missed a game winning 3 @ ND in Jan. I remember watching it live and thought he drained it, then it rimmed out, won’t be happening much in the dance IMO.

He's hit other game winners or clutch shots this year too

I hate Gtown, as a Syracuse fan, but really love Monroe’s game. If that kid ever decides to take over, he’s unstoppable. He appears to be starting to do that now. If that continues, and Austin Freeman, Chris Wright and Jason Clark continue playing so well, they’ll be an extremely tough out. If John Thompson III doesn’t handcuff them, they have the ability to win it all, as much as it pains me to say. I don’t think they’re consistent enough though, and definitely have their struggles at times.

They also had 14 losses

and an RPI in the 70’s….along with losses to powerhouses such as Utah, Bradley, Georgia, and Northwestern. They had some very nice wins, but all those losses, including the bad ones did them in. Losing 6 of 8 didn’t help either.

Yea I got a concussion playing BBall not FB

trying to gurad my man and yea got obliterated by a 6’4ish 225 pound fowrard setting a beautiful pick, I never saw it till it was to late and the top side of my head got rocked by the dudes shoulder. I was floored and out of it, wasn’t a severe concussion. As to football, I had on of the greatest blind-side sack (I felt like D Ware) was a LB and rushed the left edge, it was wide open and I turned the corner and the QB never saw it, after I sacked and hit his arm with the ball to cause a fumble, then we recovered and housed it. Kind of like the JP sack verse the Jets and Ellis game winning sack and FF for a TD, just the QB I hit wasn’t rolling out like JP, he was like a statue. I’ve also delivered a few de-cleaters and got a few myself, also sperated two different shoulders in tackling drills due to me being shorter in HS (5’7ish, now 6’) and had a low center of gravity verse those 6’2-4 kinda guys. Played all LB spots ( Will, Sam, & Mike), RB/FB, man I loved those friday nights.

In a charity basketball game I set a pick on a chick who didn’t see it coming. I didn’t even lean into it. She ran into me and fell over as I’m trying to catch her. She refused to shake my hand after the game as if I did something to harm her.

that's just bad sportsmanship, picks are part of BBall

Then you try to catch her and she still is upset, I’d be like you’re the bad sport, that’s some BS. Now with screens I got my head on a swivel and just either switch who I’m guarding or try to slide under the screen without giving up to much space. We have a great intram. BBall league at ND and even the football players are in it, very fun but I’m usually our PG and I love running high screen and rolls then penetrating, drawing in the D, then either kicking out to out shooters or If the lane is open I’ll just take it to the hole. I’m a shooter, love it and practice my jumper a lot ecsp. my mid-range shot (the lost art).

I have.

It’s not nearly comparable to a pulling guard hitting you on the ribs at full speed in a helmet and shoulderpads, when you think you have a free shot at the QB, when the tackle blocks down, always look inside for the pulling blocker to shed him. It’s not a mistake you want to make twice.

All I was basing that on honestly

Was slapshots. I played football, and the collisions while painful were you know manageable. I just can’t imagine using my body to block a puck going 90 mph is all. Vulcanised rubber+ 90 mph= ouchies. But yea it was pretty much a semantics based argument.

I mostly played RW and a little center so I was rarely in position to block shots with my body, I was mostly the one sending the Slapshots and hitting people in the corner to dig out pucks and center them or get them up ice in my own end.

Chris Drury is one of the toughest hockey players I have seen, I wish the Sabres never got rid of him, he was the one guy who would always give up the body to block a shot, the broken jaw game, he is as tough as they come.

I don't think so.
Football players are tough. hockey player’s are tougher.

When I played football, I hurt all over after every game on the line. There would be bruises all over my arms all season.

When I played hockey I only got hurt and felt pain once, when I got a stick hard in the ribs after a face off. Well except if you are playing pickup games on a frozen pond and not wearing a helmet and face cage, then you can get hurt really bad in hockey.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Where did you go to school in St. Louis

I just have a few very close friends from there, and like the city. Also SLU was one of the schools I visited on my mid-west tour, Chi (NW, Loyola Chi.), Cinci (Xavier), Milw (Quette) and then the SB, wow South Bend sucks. I miss Buffalo, maybe that’s why I’m there all the damn time, try to get to 3-5 games a year (this year I only went to the Bucs & Pats games, yea). Anyway, Cubs fan here but I have no faith in the team, I love me some Zambrano though. Go Cubs beat those Cards, I might be interested.

I went to SLU. We actually had a number of the same schools on our lists, and I also had a bunch of friends at ND. I played Ultimate at SLU, so I have come in contact with a few of the ultimate guys at ND, and my best friend from high school also went to ND. I loved St. Louis. Worked at the Arch for a summer because I needed money but didn’t really want a real job, and the City Museum might be one of my top 3 favorite places in the world, no joke. What dorm did you live in at ND?

And too bad that you’re a Cubs fan. Although the one game I went to at Wrigley might have been the most entertaining trip to a sporting event I have ever been to that had nothing to do with the actual game.

by pozzed51 on Mar 16, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we were both looking for the same type of schools, very nice choices.

I lived in Zahm, the greatest part of living there was my freshman year we won the innerhall Intra. football title. Getting to win the title in ND stadium ( it’s the venue for the title game every year, & gets great fan turnout) was one of the greatest sports moment of my life, it was surreal to play on that field, hard to explain. Anyway we had some studs on the team that year, a kid from Mississippi (high school QB) who was just by far and away the best non FB player QB at ND ever.
As for Cubbie games in Wrigleyville, you’re right it’s more of a party than a sporting event. This almost is apalling to me being such a die hard Bills & ND FB fan. I dislike that even if the Cubs are a 70-85 win team or even less, they always sell out the place and fans will always support them even if they suck. For me in baseball, IMO if your team isn’t willing to put a winner out on the field, fans shouldn’t support them like the Cubs fans do because they’ll keep doing what they’re doing and being mediocre. Just look around the MLB, some teams ( Royals, Pirates, Marlins, & D Rays) even if the latter two teams are good, they still struggle to sell out games. In the NFL and other sports but specificially the NFL need fans to attend games regardless of the FO (due to the normal salary cap).Ifeel the Cubs will never win untill this happens and a real owner takes them over and then cares to win, not make it just a party atmosphere. Sorry for the Cubs rant, I’m a fan of teams that have been awful for the past 15 years.

If you went lived in Zahm, you for sure knew my friend, and if memory serves me right I am pretty sure he won his freshman year as well, so did you just graduate? Theo was a running back (I don’t know that he would want me spreading his whole name all over the nets :)), and he gave me about a one hour recap of that game. I popped over to ND my fresh and soph year, and went to the BYU and UCLA game (where Smawjhcuefheudja caught the winning TD), and made fun of the waffle irons a few times.

As for the Cubs, I dated a girl for a while who was a Cubs fan. Awful decision on my part :). But I agree, Ozzie on the South Side was 100% correct about White Sox fans vs. Cubs fans. And the Cubbies just got a new owner, and got rid of Milton Bradley (remember when the Indians had both him and Coco Crisp. Best named outfield ever). If Zambrano stops being a good, Derek Lee becomes consistent again and Aramis can stay healthy, you guys have the bit pieces to be extremely competitive. Of course, you guys still have Soriano who complains his way to the lead off position every year, so that’s a negative…

I'm in my first year in the MBA program.

Yes, graduated last spring. I’m pretty sure I know who you’re talking about in regards to the RB on the squad. I had a few opportunities but decided that I didn’t really want to start anything that I considered a ‘real job’ so I joined the JVC and found myself in Alaska working at a residential treatment facility for teens. Was recently offered a few positions back in the northeast, so I am deciding between those. My year is over at the end of July, but I am probably going to be staying here for an extra month or two. I love the summer here way too much to leave any earlier.

also nice working with the youngsters, all could use some sort of guidance, So, is it really that nice up in there during the summer? and what part of Alaska, if you care to share?

I am currently in Sitka, which was the town immortalized by the movie ‘The Proposal,’ and it is in Southeast Alaska, not the interior. The closest climate in the world to Sitka is New Zealand; only two temperate rainforests in the world. I got here in August, right before the salmon started running and spawning, which was one of the coolest things that I have ever seen. I’ve seen a bunch of bears and bald eagles and I am surrounded on three sides by mountains and the fourth opens up into the ocean. During the summer it’ll be between 65-75 every day, it’ll rain a little, but it will be light until about 2 AM, and since I am an avid hiker and kayaker that is awesome (in September a hunchback breached about 50 feet from where I was); I usually get out of work around three, so that will give me a fair amount of time to hang out and do stuff. As you can tell, I love it here. Unfortunately, it cost me about $1000 and took me about 24 hours to get home over Christmas, so I never really considered staying full time. But as you can tell from this disproportionate response to your question, I love it here and urge anyone to visit.

by pozzed51 on Mar 17, 2010 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

Man, sounds like a beautiful place to visit, duruing those summer months.

As to kayaking, I’m not avid but do it whenever I’m on vacation (usually Key West, and then been to Hawaii twice) and when I was kayaking in a bay on the Big Island in Kona and literally 5 ft from me 4 dolphins were just jumpin, swimming, and doing whatever they do, it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen. I couldn’t imagine a whale being 50 ft from me, that might get me a little nervous but I’m sure was an amazing sight. Because of you my friend, I’m going to see Alaska sometime, thanks buddy, its been nice talking to you. The common theme between us will always be those Buffalo Bills, I really love this team.

Not me. But I did do a bracket yesterday afternoon where, outside of automatically placing the #1 seeds into the second round, I picked winners based entirely on which team’s mascot would win in a fight. I ended up with a Michigan State, Florida State, Clemson, and Old Dominion final four – with Old Dominion beating Michigan State in the Finals.

Needless to say, I like my chances.

Illinois: My governor is a bigger crook than your governor

by John H IL on Mar 19, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I picked Clemson’s Tiger over Missouri’s Tiger because of geographic location. A tiger in the middle of Missouri seemed ridiculous to me. A tiger in Missouri is a zoo tiger.

Obviously, tiger’s are not indigenous to South Carolina either, but it made sense to me that someone could have purchased a tiger off the black market, and raised it in South Carolina. The climate in South Carolina at least makes this somewhat plausible.

So, it came down to a zoo tiger (Missouri) vs. a black market purchased, home-raised tiger in some redneck’s back yard (Clemson). And thus, I chose Clemson.

And it’s these types of ridiculous mind exercises that made filling out my “mascot death match” bracket way too much fun.

The Pac-10 has been crud all year everyone knew it would be…………the Big East wasnt supposed to be.

Yay?

The Big East isn’t as good as it was last year, and neither is college hoops as a whole. The Pac-10 is way down, the SEC is down, the ACC is really down. The Big 10 and 12 were both solid.

One or two games doesn’t prove conference worth. The overall body of work shows just how bad the Pac-10 was this year. I’m sure it’ll be better next year.

After watching basketball and rooting for my brackets has been great and like I said I don’t remember a day having so many great games and buzzer beaters. Tomorow could never live up to what today has produced, today I watched about 8-10 hrs of hoops ( even going to class and taking a test) and loved almost every minute of it.

How can you root for a conference? That’s one thing I’ll never understand, rooting for teams that are yearly rivals of your own team? You won’t find me rooting for a Georgetown or UConn or Villanova in the NCAA’s, ever. Well unless they are playing against Duke, UNC and the rest of the ACC.

okay how about rooting for the AFC in the probowl over the NFC?

or Rooting for Team USA hockey even though there are guys on the USA team that you hate?

I mean the examples are numerous……Im sure….somewhere along the line you broaden your rooting horizons and root for a team somewhere at sometime you dont neccessarily like, because they are playing against another team (or conference) that you dont?

The only cure for a bad today is tomorrow.

by norcaliangelsfan on Mar 21, 2010 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

That's completely different

I’m talking about rooting for a rival just because they are playing in the playoffs/tournament. I wasn’t rooting for the Jets against the Chargers this year. I wasn’t rooting for anyone. I wasn’t rooting for Villanova against St. Mary’s yesterday. I’m saying I could never root for a rival in a game where my team isn’t involved. Sure if Villanova was playing against Duke, I’d rather have Villanova win simply because I despise Duke more, but that doesn’t mean I’d root for Villanova. I just could never root for a rival. I’m sure others feel the same way. I’ll root for teams that I don’t care about when they are playing other teams I don’t care about, or hate.

AFC over NFC….who cares? Team USA hockey…I don’t care.

I seriously just don’t get it… ugh.

what, don't like underdogs? do you hate puppies too? :)

they’re a bunch of nerdy jock sharpshooters who play strong D. get out to a fast lead and don’t give it up. what’s not to like? of course, neither of the teams they’ve played against have shown much spark. they’ll have their work cut out for them against Kentucky.

yes, extremely proud alum here. I can’t believe I have a team to root for in a sport that people actually care about. You know, one thats not hockey, lacrosse, polo, wrestling, or rugby.

I hate puppies!

but seriously, I don’t hate puppies or underdogs… just a little frustrated by the way my brackets shakin up, that’s all! I actually used to like watching Princeton play a while back and that’s cool that you are a proud alum. And I agree with the other comments too that Kentucky should be prepared and not overlook this team! Good luck the rest of the way!

by gfbillsfan on Mar 22, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

haha, yeah thanks

i’m just really excited that they’ve won two games, let alone one! after two straight years of being manhandled in the first round, my expectations were low, then they were brought way up after the first win, and now they’re kinda through the roof! and yet waiting for the other shoe to drop. kinda like when the bills were 5-1 in 2008. If they can contain the Kentucky frosh and their athleticism and continue to play as precisely as they have been, well, at the very least it will be a good game. One game at a time!

by k8 on Mar 22, 2010 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

If you think Cornell could win

I fully agree, they’ve got to keep the game at a slow pace. They can’t let Kentucky run over them and get easy transition buckets, if Cornell plays their game and can make the frosh of Kentucky to play a slow, Ivy-League type game, they could easily win this game. Man Northern Iowa team has me believing that this group of teams are pretty much equal from the top-3 to the 70-80th best team, I mean as in parity between the many teams in the tourny and others.

You don't get what?

They just dominated two very good defensive teams. They’re legit, and Kentucky needs to be prepared and ready for them….

I wonder the average SAT/ACT score

for the Cornell BBall team verse the Kentucky staters is, has to be utterly dramatic. I really feel that they are going to knock Kentucky out of the tourny, but that’s just me. I love Cornell and Northern Iowa, both play such quality basketball.

by SouthBuffaloNDgrad on Mar 22, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't disagree with Cornell beating Kentucky....

If they continue shooting like they have in their two games, they’ll have a great shot. The problems they’re going to face are the vastly improved athleticism, speed and talent in their opponent. Kentucky isn’t Temple or Wisconsin. They are probably the most talented team in the country and have at least 3 and possibly 4 lottery picks in Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe and maybe Patterson.

If they can hit those shots, avoid getting steamrolled inside and force Kentucky to make mistakes, they’ll have a chance. Even though they’ll be playing an hour from home, they’re also going to have to go against a crowd that’s likely to be pro-UK with all the fans that travel for that program. Believe me, there’s going to be a TON of UK fans. The last time they played in the regionals in the Dome (2002), I was there, and I’d say there was a good 8-10K dressed in blue for Kentucky.

But I couldn’t agree more. Most of the time I don’t get into regular season college hoops, with the exception being Duke/UNC, but the tourney is a completely different beast, good stuff!

Imagine how much better

college football would be if they had a single elimination tourney. That could be an even better event than the NCAA basketball tourney. Too bad there’s little chance of it happening anytime soon…..

Wow, man I would love a 16, 32 team tourny for college ball,

or byes for the top-4ish and have 20 teams with the top-4 having byes, but yea the damn college presidents and NCAA are making too much money with this system. We can only wish.

by SouthBuffaloNDgrad on Mar 23, 2010 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd probably go with a 12 or 20 team Tourney

The top 4 teams get a bye, with the remaining 8 or 16 playing the first weekend to move on….

Really, would it be that big of a stretch to move to a playoff? They always talk about missing classes and all that, but is it that big of a deal to be playing a game on Saturday, after traveling on Friday?

by Undee on Mar 23, 2010 2:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Thing is

Couldn’t they make a lot more money by going with the playoff system here? They can still keep all the lower tier bowls for teams who don’t make the 12 or 20 team field, while utilizing some of the major bowls (Rose, Fiesta, Cotton, etc) to play the playoff games. There would be more games being played by those 12-20 teams, so wouldn’t that mean more money???

by Kurupt on Mar 23, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

And wouldn’t it give relevance to some of the obscure bowls if they were part of a NIT-like tourney? There are tons of good arguments for a change.

a.k.a. Undee

by Undee on Mar 23, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

The obscure bowls would remain obscure. They’re basically useless in the grand scheme of things now, so I don’t see that changing. You wouldn’t need to include them in a tourney like format.

I mentioned above that moving to a playoff might have an impact on class schedules, but that actually wouldn’t matter if the games are being played in mid/late Dec – early/mid Jan. since schools are on break then.

If there were a 12 team playoff, let’s say, you could play the first round the weekend before Christmas. If Christmas is on Sat. or Sunday for the year, play some night games on Wed/Thur/Fri then. The winner would move on to play the 4 teams with byes. You could play those games on New Year’s Day then, using the four BCS bowls in the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta and Orange Bowl. The 4 winners would move on to play either the Thurs/Friday of the next week or the following weekend. Classes at those schools will not have started, for the most part still. The 2 winners would move on to play in the grand National Championship game the following Saturday. College Football could be so much better with a playoff, but it’s probably never going to happen…..

I like that

schedule for a possible playoff, It would work with the school’s schedules and also use most of the bowl games (def. keep the big bowls, Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, & keep the Cotton Bowl). The way I was saying that the college presidents and the NCAA making money off the BCS system and want to keep it that way.

As for the K St vs Xavier game, I won the bet

when Xaviers 3 point attempt in 2OT missed and then I won my bet, if he drains that shot I wouldv’e lost my bet. As to Cornell, they got dominated by Cousins.
